  • FFXI has changed alot over its 16+ years of life, and some would argue that not all those changes have been for the better. In an attempt to recreate what was lost, players have started hosting their own private servers with an older level 75 cap ruleset and state of the game. Nasomi is the most populated of these, and in this video my tiny hume rdm finally begins his journey.
New gaming videos every week! Nostalgic throwbacks, Top Tips, and just random hilarity fumbling my way through Final Fantasy XI, XIV, and a myriad of others. Released every Saturday.

One of my favourite things is listening to my boyfriend regale me with tales of FFXI. I've never played, but everyone who has, all seem to have such wonderful memories and stories, and such a love of the game!
Your video was another testament to how loved this game is by the community. :D Really enjoyable watch!

I spent a crapload of time farming low level areas back in the day. Crawlers in Sarutabaruta (maybe lucking out with Fruit Punches and Mist Silk Cape drops), Goblin Weavers for cotton mats and wild onions, bees and saplings in Gustaberg, shrooms in Ronfaure, etc. Leveling THF was a godsend to make money, which was definitely a huge part of fun for me.

Personally I don't think XI live servers are like WoW at all, today's ffxi there are MORE options not less, jobs really gained more complexity and job identity with level 99 and job point system, trusts are one of the best battle NPC systems added to any mmo ever. WoW needed classic because the current game is less than vanilla its lost something, XI only gained imo.

    • @RaxiazRedux
      @RaxiazRedux 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah. I can't understand why anyone would want to go back to "vanilla" FFXI (it's not even vanilla, if you're playing with RotZ and CoP expansions, can't really call it vanilla) where it takes 6-10 hours to gain 1 level at 50+. Some people like that, but then there are some people who love being tied up and whipped until they're bleeding. So, to each their own.

@@RaxiazRedux We call it vanilla because ToAU was the point where the game still resembled the original version (just with some additional content and jobs), before most of the major changes were made that turned it into an "easier" game.

It can be a "small" change for some but gigantic for others. In EQ2 quite a lot was retained but combat was dramatically shortened and made much easier. No one seemed to notice, the crowd just took it in stride. I was left in the dust astonished that there wasn't a rebellion.

Modern mmo's are far too linear.
Just look at FFXIV, you get to max level and then you are following a gear score level instead that dictates a clear order to group events that all have a gear score entry level.
It never feels like a true open world as you are directed through a path of content.
FFXI (75 cap) felt like an adventure.
"Here's the world, got fourth young adventurer and find your own path"
You could choose only 1 endgame area to spend your time if you wanted and you'd be able to build a gear set that was comparable to anyone else's, everyone within a class looked vastly different as there was no gear score, just top level gear and it was only differing bonus stats that separated them so everyone had wildly different builds, some were balanced, some were high stat or att based and some (like my Sam/rng) were stacking haste and multi attack weapons to be weapon skillchaining machines.
WoW and FFXIV feel more like mobile games in how scripted your time is.

    • @huskymcfluff
      @huskymcfluff 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Pretty interesting take; can't say I disagree. One of the things I hate in more modern MMOs like FFXIV is the class design. FFXIV's combo rotation design just feels so mechanical and repetitive to me. I feel like dodging AoE zones is the only thing requiring me to have my eyes open to play that game, because everything else is just a routine you execute ad nauseam. The jobs/classes all felt so homogenous.
In WoW, it's much less concrete than that, but you're still either adhering to a rotation or to skill priorities off of a global cooldown.
FFXI felt different, and I liked that about it. It was less about how fast you can crank out how many skills, and more about which skills you use and when. It embodied patience, anticipation, and delayed gratification. I always felt like FFXI was the "chess" of the MMO world.

So much nostalgia rolling off this video! I really do hope this becomes a series so long as you're having fun playing on a private server. I must say, as much as I'm nostalgic for the days of old, I am equally not missing the brutality that was FFXI at its heyday.
I've never tried playing on a private server, and unfortunately I don't really have the time to invest on a time-capsuled version of FFXI. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that old-school FFXI was the most time-consuming grind I've ever played in my life. It made any supposed "grind" from any other game look tame by comparison.
Since you're always talking about your experiences with FFXI throughout the years, I thought I'd share a story, too. I actually fully pre-ordered FFXI for the PS2 late 2002 and purchased the Brady Games FFXI Fall 2003 strategy guide when it originally came out. Because the game itself was pushed back to spring 2004, that meant I had months to pour over the guide and obsess on this game. Long before I set foot in Vana'diel, I had already determined to play as a Hume Red Mage beginning in the nation of Bastok. Memories of my early experiences in FFXI - from taking two days setting up the frustratingly confusing PlayOnline account, to setting foot in Gustaberg and fighting worms for the first time, to seeing the first mass aggro-train in Palborough mines consisting of every Quadav in the zone - are as vivid today as they were when they first occurred over a decade ago.
As for what I'd change from back in 2004-2005, I'd say have the airships actually wait for you and not take off when you're two steps from boarding it. Better yet, if you're already in the boarding area, have the decency to ask the player if they'd like to hop on. I don't know how many times I was in a panic about missing an airship heading to Kazham, having spoken to the NPC stating the ship will depart soon, paid for the transportation, rushed through customs, only for the ship to start backing away right in front of my face. Suffice to say, missing an airship was the cause of much rage back in the day.

I'm the opposite to most people. In FFXI, I've always liked starting over with new characters. The experience of being a waste of skin and scavenging anything you can find to make a profit is pretty cool and compelling. And restarting with your knowledge on things is a fun project. This is also why roguelikes are my favorite game type of the time.

I love being one of the 5 people running around in Bastok actually doing things. I look at the dozens of maxed out players just standing around, waiting for something to happen. MMO end game content tends to bore me, just because theres only so much to do so often. End game feels so much more like a slog than grinding levels. But that's just me.

One change for early FFXI that would have been a huge positive difference IMO would be level-sync. I still remember the very first party I level-sync'd into as a 50-60-some whitemage down to Gustav tunnel (whatever level that was?) and had a blast with some friends who I had never actually gotten to party with. I wasn't a fan of the abuse of syncing at very low levels (astral flow parties, etc.) but.... overall it was incredible.

    • @Gweivyth
      @Gweivyth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We have level sync on Eden, and yeah it has been a big boon. People tend not to abuse the "broken" stuff very often, mostly because that stuff is boring as hell and a lot of people who play on private servers play to have fun and not just to do whatever is most efficient.

I remember playing FFXI at the NA PS2 launch. It was my first MMO and everything was new. Going to La Theine Plateau for the first time was scary. It was so big compared to Ronfaure Forest, it was intimidating. I played some on Nasomi last year; it was neat to try and replicate those feelings again, but it'll never be quite the same. I took it as an opportunity to try things I never got to the first time. Play a different race, job, home nation, that sort of thing.

I had mixed feelings on my time with Nasomi. I enjoyed the time I spent with it, but I did not like what I was seeing in terms of the community. Lots of great folks, don't get me wrong. But I swear damn well everyone I played with was only interested in the most "optimal" kinds of everything. Camps, gear setups, etc. The game is basically frozen in time and people have already worked out the most optimal strategy for everything and well... no one is interested in trying anything but that because this particular era of the game has already been theorycrafted to hell and back. Seeing things like Dark Knights never using a greatsword, Red Mage's not even bothering carrying around a sword and just every high level player geared almost exactly the same just made me a little depressed. Multiboxing is so rampant it just takes me out of the experience as well. Not one party I had didn't at least have one dude multiboxing his high level healer. It was still a good experience, but not one I could put a lot of time into. That feeling of discovery isn't there anymore.

It is rampant everywhere. The non-nerds joined the gaming community a while back and changed everything. Even watching you play on the private server it still doesn't look like I remember. The game looks so dead now. On the private server you were playing on and retail. I remember those old areas just buzzing with players. People going everywhere. Parties all over the dunes. SE really knew that the focus of 11 and what made it so great was the players. Without them its really just not the same.
If I could have changed one thing about 11 back in its heyday, it would have been dark knight spells. Dark knight was my favorite job but the spells were what ruined its functionality for me. I loved casting drain and the like but that mage casting was no good for a melee DD. The dark knight spells like drain, dread spikes and absorb should have all been job abilities like any other melee DD.
Newly subscribed. Like the channel. I'm thinking about getting back on 11. I was on Leviathan the last time I played. Not sure how the servers are even done any more. Would be cool to party with you like old school.

depends on what server you're playing on. Everyone recommends Nasomi, but i found it to be TOO brutal (gil wise) to new players. the new player experience on nasomi is NOT like how it was back in the day. Back in the day there was an active AH, so making gil wasn't that hard. If Nasomi were to give new players some starting gil, or AH bots to simulate an active AH I would be all about it. I chose HomepointXI (formerly LegionDark) specifically for that reason. I recommend it.

2003-2004 FFXI needs Level Sync. Yes, the worst downside to it is that its easy to fall behind on your skill levels but the fact that you can jump into any party is amazing and if you enjoy the harder lvling jobs like drg, drk, smn and so on, it makes leveling them 1000% better. Its sad that it took untell WoTG before level sync came out.

Removing experience loss on death would have ripple effects, too, though. Warp would be useless and NIN would lose the uniqueness of its two-hour because people would just die and return to home point with no penalty. Those are minor, yes, but also making death not as punishing would take away the fear of it, thus diminishing the respect we as players should have for the world.

nasomi is yesterdays news. all broken with bugs and guy running it doesnt know how to fix the problems. eden server is where its at for a well maintained server. Nasomi is just the oldest and is way too broken. dynamis runs were dropping enough currency to complete multiple relics in a few runs. Af was dropping like hotcakes. the older players are decked the gills. no delivery box system. custom nms running around. its rubbish lol while nasomi has 2k players after 5 years. eden attracted 600 in 2 months since it went live and growing rapidly.

@@CodyRockLee13 Nasomi is fine, if you got friends there, thats where you should play. its playable to get an ffxi fix. but when compared to eden its not even close. Eden has no relics. Theres no Drings as of yet and even the number of ridills and E/A bodys are a handful. That sense of fairness is more than enough. They hired new developers from the playerbase. A server discord where all players can talk things out. apart from ingame features that accurately reflect ffxi in its Era years. Plus any bugs can be reported by players on edens github and fixed in a timely fashion

Playing on Nasomi is great, for a while. However its not really a "Era" server, and for some reason Nasomi will just do odd balance changes that make no sense. It can hurt when you lvl and pay to get your Ranger to a high lvl and they just introduce Ranged attack optimal distance out of nowhere. Also, after a while the glitches and the odd changes start to irritate you I find. Enjoy your time tho, and beware the boats in selbina and Mhaura, they....can just drop you on top of the water sometimes.

If they had actually made a good work out of our Adventuring Fellow early on, making it equivalent to current Trusts, but limiting it to 1 per player, then, maybe, those party of 3 PCs you’ve mentioned, each with their Fellows, would be possible without “breaking the game” or making it too easy.

I leveled an RDM up to 10 (derping in King Ranperre's Tomb) on Eden. I didn't have too hard of a time but after hitting 10 i knew this is where the real game begins. It was hard to find low level groups which is a shame. The old school vibe is really addicting but the inevitable time sink of countless hours is really daunting. If the server had players in the thousands instead of hundreds, maybe getting a foothold in the server would be easier. It's a damn shame because the difficulty curve is fun. I'm glad the server exists though and the people behind it are actively making it a better experience (i mean it actually works really well)
I really want to play there but man, i don't know if i have the time and patience (to wait for parties) I highly recommend the server as an experience at least. It was a different time and mind set and this is a chance to experience it all over again (in good and bad)

at this point i'd recommend eden as well. nasomi's biggest problem is the guy himself. for one example, ZNM's were on his server for something like 15 months, people like me and my friend were able to join the game, level our first 75, unlock beastmaster and level that to 75 and fully merit it and then farm up gears from the ZNM's. if you ever played old school FFxi you know the type of effort i'm talking about there. and then 1 day he decides hes going to polish up aht urghan content now and so all the stuff everyone farmed is going to be deleted. i dont care what argument you make for being in favor of that, the bottom line is people are being punished for simply playing the content on offer at the time they played on his server, and its pretty clear that he doesnt give a fuck about your time and will delete anything he wants whenever he wants cause its his server. Thats just 1 reason i could really make this comment a rant if i kept going.

I started on Nasomi a while back; having no prior FFXI experience, it was a brutal beginning. I started as a WHM, thinking, "Oh yeah, healers are always wanted in MMO parties, right?" Little did I know I was making my start much more painful than it needed to be for a newb in an already punishing game, haha. I definitely want to eventually climb my way to my first 75, but I've actually been thinking of getting a retail sub, too, though, as you suggested. I've been thinking about that for awhile now.

I think if the private servers were to merge and actually keep the things exactly like they were before it would be great. As for me I experienced the game for a bit twice, once up to level 59 then again up to level 80. The problem back then was to actually look for parties and find groups, but once you did your experience was amazing and rewarding. Even though I used to check how many active players were in the world several times while logged in and it used to show me “~2500” players, many other times over 4000... and many times you still had problems to find parties (hours) and took time do stuff,(I can’t imagine with a server with less than 1000 people), but was really fun, I met many great people that I’ve never met those kind of people in other mmos (ex: one person helped me once like for 4+ straight hours to do several difficult quest and that person didn’t even speak my language so we used to communicate by the in game translator a little and mostly by in game gestures). And so many other great experiences.
This game is old and not that many new players are trying it out so it’s difficult to revive that experience since most new players are returning players that come back to finish the content/story they couldn’t before, and to try new things/new jobs, etc.
This old experience could be SLIGHTLY revived if most private servers were to merge and leave the game how it originally was in my opinion. That could bring the population to a couple thousands connected at the same time, reviving that experience. I remember going to “valkurm dunes” and seeing like 10 parties at least fighting for experience.
But as I see it now, it’s still a lonely place. So if you are going to solo most of the stuff I rather go retail. At least I get to experience all the new expansions, all the story, all the jobs I want that I didn’t try and all those things I always wanted to do but couldn’t because of lack of people.
On private servers There are many changes that were not there and suddenly they decide to make which turn things upside down for many people.
You cannot transfer your character in case you decide to go to another server or retail. And you could lose it anytime if square Enix or the developer decides to close down that server. So it’s nothing secure there.
I can log it with my character I played in the early 2000s if I wanted on retail, and I know it will always be there.
So if the private servers were to collaborate with each other that would change things but as it is now? I don’t think so. It is good to try them for a little though if you have a friend or group of people that you know will play with you constantly. Other than that Retail in my opinion.

Wayyyy to much time investment, very slow progression and needing alliances all the time for end game content is why FFXI lost a lot of people eventually. I sill play today and obtaining things is much easier and their are a few instances where an alliance is needed. FFXI at the start didn't realize people have lives and alliances for everything is not the solution.

I picked this game back up after years, started building my Goldsmithing, found that people were buying Copper Ingots for 60K a stack, and became a millionaire in the first two weeks.
Then I did the same thing for my dad’s character.

I had the market cornered for half a month until people picked up on it. I was making 10s of stacks of Copper Ingots a day. They sold fast too. What a time... wonder how the market is these days.

My exact reaction when I looked at Nasomi that and the lag was awful compared to retail

Play on Eden. Nasomi is run by one guy (Nasomi himself) and he's not a great dev and he's the only dev. Eden has good devs. I had the same issue with Nasomi, and while it has a decent enough experience, things like that, old camps not being the same, and other bad things like /sea and delivery box not working, made me jump ship immediately when I learned about Eden.

where can I install the private server?

Seriously play on Eden! Its still a classic server but they fix bugs and develop more content regularly becauser its got like 7 devs. The cop missions are actually hard like retail and not missing most of their ai!
