i used to like using the Light Elemental for downtime cos of the really cheap Curagas and buffs.. but yeah they were quite underused cos people would usually have someone who could cast those buffs already and they were a bit finicky
Yeah, but I blame SE for that. Obviously, they didn't show SMN any love in the early years, but I think that they should've made the spirits cost no MP. The spirits should have also been like having an extra BLM on the team, and the spirits should have casted much more frequently. That would've been really helpful since you can buy the elementals before you have all the avatars.
FFXI SMN = Controller of the Gods FFXIV SMN = Flashy Side Kicks I main smn on both platforms but FFXI is just so much better and makes you feel more powerful.
Thanks man. This was my first mmorpg and the only one i really liked. It's unique style ruined the others for me lol. I started playing when I was 11! So thats... 2002 i think. SMN was my favorite class but unfortunately they ruined it completely. You could never really use your summons in parties and so everyone made you a bootleg whm. I hear it's better now. Back then it was brutal. I'll never understand why they made such an amazing and important FF class so weak! Finally after getting to 75 with smn i tried out bard and discovered it was my actual favorite job to play lol. DNC and BLU were cool, too. I quit when i was like 17 and never looked back so I missed out on all the improvements that that game DESPERATELY needed. Man, SE treated us so bad in FFXI. That game was tough! Amazing, but so hard. I wished they would've given us male mithra and female galka. That whole game was so restrictive... I could never play it now. Anyway, thanks for the nostalgia.
Right? They completely took away any sort of Summoning identity it had with the rework. I was a SMN main from day one and lost all interest in the job now.
@@Akihito_Kanbara That sucks, don't undertsnad why they cant just have static summons and you command them to use their skills whilst havign a few of your own. Hope you find a replacement job
@@Akihito_Kanbara that's why I don't understand all the praise Yoshi gets. He removed the identity from all the classes. They all feel samey. You're either ranged dps, melee dps, heals, or tank. Sad change from 11 to 14.
@@Revenu yep. For the first few years things were great. Even after they toned down on choosing your own cross class skills, things were still complex and unique enough for classes to have an identity. Now everything has been gutted and dumbed down to the point all you're really doing is choosing how you want your flashy lights to look. The game used to be so great. I started in 1.0 alpha, paid my sub throughout the relaunch, got my Legacy status, and stayed for many many years. Only ever quit for a few months at a time, until Endwalker. The only avatars I don't like are Atomos and Siren. I feel like Atomos isn't fleshed out/useful enough and I don't like the design. Siren, honestly, looks like Garuda's cousin. She's green, has wind powers, and wings. I think they should have switched up her design and color scheme to differentiate her from Garuda. Maybe play up the fairy aspect of Siren instead.
I've play a looot of XIV. Started after endwalker launched but have more than 3k hours and all jobs on 90. I still love the game and will propably play every new expansion and patches until the game is shut down, but after started playing XI and experiencing its blue mage and summoner i can't say i like how accessible XIV is. It's wierd seeing all the monsters, locations a npcs copy pasted from XI to XIV, the former has a lot more natural difficulty spike between normal and hard content. Meanwhile XIV normal and hard is like a night and day, everything is so easy and suddenly on savage you're not permited to slip up once .
totally agree. the baseline for 11 with content is generally higher and there really isn’t such a thing as “trash mobs” in any challenging content, and in the past exp mobs. a lot more mattered in the day to day as well, like enemy type, their specific elemental or physical weaknesses, TP moves to look out for and avoid. You really get rewarded for understanding these fundamentals and they carry through the entire game
Something that always irritated me about summoner (out of many things) was the uselessness of the spirits. They could've done so much with it. Why add it when they have no use? They should've made the spirits cost no MP to keep out and basically made them really good BLM pets who can buff and debuff at random. That would've been helpful.
I ended up doing a while year long study along with another summoner (Spira) at the time. They were usable, but their AI and cryptic random spell cycles made them hard to use. Out of all of them, dark spirit was the one that I almost never found use for. They feel further behind after the 75 cap when they received no love after that point at all.
@shinsetsusha yeah thats when they were still okay at 75 cap. After the cap went past 75, they didn't get updated with the new stronger spells or faster cast times. Summoning skill seemed to reach a point of diminishing returns after 75 and they fell behind even quicker. Summoning skill used to decrease cast and recast time of spirits spells and increase their magic accuracy, but seemingly not damage. Certain spells had triggers that would force the spirit to use them. Light spirit for instance may cast cure V or Curaga 4 if one or more alliance members were below half health. It could even cast healing and raise III across parties or alliances. I used light spirit tons as smn in the early days of dynamis.
It's sad, especially since Trusts have become so pervasive. We can't control what they cast, so SE could at least give them a BLM protocol so they could maybe MB instead of reapplying Drown over and over.
Watching the video I ask myself the question... How difficult is it for FFXIV devs to do this with smn? Seriously, it seems that with each expansion they put less love into the job and I feel that with each expansion they become more and more lazy, and the fault lies with the ffxiv andys who allow this, you cannot criticize them because they immediately defend them... I just hope that for 8.0 we do something different, how fun it would be if they let us choose invocations, instead of the same as always, making the rotation and the opener more flexible and dynamic, everyone would love SMN
I have no idea why SE shows no love to smn seeing as it's an iconic FF class. You'd think a mage who could summon otherworldly gods would be incredible. Even in FF11 they nerfed SMN. It wasn't till much much later (over a decade) that they finally gave it some buffs. It's a shame because it's such a cool concept... They never let it be great. I always imagined it as a major magic DD (right under BLM) with additional support. In the early days of FF11 tho you couldn't even keep your summons out in parties because they drained so much MP over time. It sucked.
Yoshi P doesn't like pet classes from what I was told which sucks because 14 could have had an awesome pet system. We may have even seen beastmaster as a melee pet job :(
@@maverickbull1909 To be honest it's not Square Enix's business, it's 100% up to the game director. For example, in FF16 you can see that they love SMN there.
