How to disassemble and maintain the Kershaw Blur Speedsafe Pocketknife

  • Today, another lower-end disassembly, this time of the Kershaw Blur. The Blur is a straightforward knife, but the Speedsafe mechanism is always a bit complicated, and poor tolerances mean that centering is a bit of an issue. But all's well that ends well!

I bought one of these knives in 2008, and the bar broke after a few years. I removed the broken bits and just use the knife as a manual folder. Its still all these years later one of my favorites.

We are more than willing to disassemble/clean our own knives but a nice benefit to getting knives to Nick is he does it for us ;) (for good content of course, we do appreciate it)
FYI Nick, this knife was as-is from Kershaw, never disassembled. I took apart a Link the other day and yuck, grease/dirt.

Nick....Awesome you break that down almost on the fly like that. I admire that. Aside from it needing cleaning, I leave mine alone. I have 4 in different colors, they are very nice, my other plain black one from WalMart is my EDC. It has the intimidating snap-sound and one hand for my needs in the ghetto, pit bulls, etc. for work. I love that knife. But yeah...they should update it, and/or offer 2 styles. Perfect E.D.C. really.

The nicest thing about assisted opening knives is that, in many jurisdictions at least, they are automatic knives that are not classified as such.

Hey Nick, thanks for the tutorials. I just took apart a knife and cleaned and maintained it for the first time. My SpeedSafe Blur probably wasn't the best choice for a first attempt, but I was successful. I would have never tried without this tutorial.
Thanks for all you do, Nick.

Bought this knife in red about a week ago. Didn't even think twice about watching a vid or researching anything and took it straight apart to clean it because it was funky and sounded like there was sand and nasty grit inside of it when you flipped the blade out. Well, short story long, I cleaned everything with wd40 and put it all back together. Now I'll be honest, im a knife collecting rookie. I only own about 10 and that was maybe the 2nd one I'd ever took apart. Anyhow, 20 mins later it's back together. Adjusted the screws just right so the blade flips out as violently and as noisy as it can and it works flawlessly. No shakes. No rattles. Tight. Tbh, I probably got lucky lol.

Yours is the only one worth using as a reference. Even if you think it should not be disassembled. How about it?

i think you just unlocked one of the biggest budget edc tactical mysteries in life sans the entire cold steel line.
the blur is pretty popular with a lot of my buddies. i ruined a few of them with the crkt big dawgs and when i moved on they didnt. lots of blade, they like the assisted action, price and steel. hit it with the kitchen rod sharpener or something at work and theyre satisfied as long as it cuts. doesnt matter how smooth or clean.
i had them all on the endura train for a couple years too. i think they keep those as the nice carry and everything else as work or beater. i just gifted my cryo II to my buddy who i got into a crkt m16 drop point soft steel something and he'll probably be moving to the rat I d2 soon.
cant wait to get my kme system but ive still gotta wait a little longer...
definitely dont want to take a blur apart. hell i have a leek i never took apart and i think its gonna stay that way!

Hey Nick! I just reassembled a kershaw injection (which had an amazing free-dropping action out of box, with no play and perfect centring) because I had noticed a bunch of rust under the scales. After cleaning off the rust, I coated the liners and washers with a gun oil (the bottle said for lubrication and corrosion protection). Now that it is reassembled the centring and action are worse, and the blade has play. Could you maybe guess at what I did wrong? Thank you so much

There was only one store selling good pocket knives in NYC, it's called Paragon. But their prices were outrageous and I believe they've since been busted for something stupid like selling assisted or axis lock knives. Now I doubt they carry anything more than a couple multi-tools.
Your best bet is to ask the hotel lobby if they can accept package deliveries and find a store willing to ship there. Worst case buy from the forums or ebay.

That hole you didn't know what it's for... it's for the pocket clip, tip down. Send me two T6 screws. When I reversed my pocket clip, one of the screws went in screwy and it cross threaded. If I'd have gotten it in all the way, I'd have said, cross thread better than a lock nut, but it kinda stripped out and I wasn't able to get it flush.
