Great vid. You don't need to worry about soupfins, they're harmless. I dive with them all the time in San Diego and never had an issue. They mainly eat lobster and octopus.
Thanks for watching! I've heard of people being charged by soupfins before around Palos Verdes and Malibu, and thankfully this one seemed pretty harmless. I'm not really sure why though. Really cool to see in the water though.
happened to me at lunada cruised above me was cool long skinny shark cruising fast hard to get on cam. still scary though look so much bigger than anything ive ever seen in the water
I had an encounter @ malaga with a soupfin that circled my buddy and I a few times. He was probably just over 5 ft, he acted unusually in that he was at surface depth and made a pass at us. I put my spear out as he approached my buddy and swam his head into it, he quickly swam behind us. He seemed to hang around parallel to us and the shore. I had never seen one that size before, and I thought his behavior was very uncharacteristic of others I'd seen. I spoke to another diver that was lobstering around there at the time, and he said between there and flatrock this time of year he's had several similar encounters -- especially with the larger sharks. It seemed more curious than anything, but to say I didn't have a nightmare inspired by the encounter would be a lie. As they say, if you act like prey they treat you like it. If you act like a predator they are more inclined to respect you. I was about to do a dive and he came right up under me and I jolted, my mistake was probably what motivated by the larger shark's curiosity. Let's just be happy it wasn't a more threatening species! Dive safe.
Thanks for watching! Must have been pretty scary haha. Glad you're alright though. Yeah you're probably right about how these larger sharks are more curious. It's always so cool seeing them in the water for sure though. Dive safe out there!

Do you have to have a license to spearfish
Thanks for watching! All you need is a fishing license with the ocean enhancement I believe. That license will let you go fishing and spearfishing
