  • The sport of MMA has exploded in over the last 15 years. Fighters come together and compete in various art forms, hence the name Mixed Martial Arts. The most popular art forms that viewers will see are Brazilian JuJitsu, Judo, Muay Thai, and boxing. Every once in a while, you can even see some other lesser-known art forms such as kempo, french savate, and even capoeira. There have even been a couple of instances where Shaolin kung fu has made an appearance. That's the beauty of this sport.

Wing Chun is not illegal in MMA. It's simply not effective!
I gouging is illegal. Fish hooking is illegal. Finger manipulation is illegal. Bitting is illegal. 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock elbow strikes are illegal. Striking the 'family jewels' is also prohibited. (Although it happens frequently.)
You can lean on your opponents throat with your forearm. But ripping out their throat will land you in prison!

You can't even legally use any of the moves that make it actually dangerous because it requires things like eye gouging and ball squeezing so no you can't even give a proper demonstration of wing Chun in the ring. I don't know why that's so hard for some people to figure out. That and most practitioners of wing Chun aren't any where near as conditioned as these professional fighters.

@@erikseavey9445 all things being equal, if you can’t box/brawl/grapple better than the opponent, the introduction of less than gentlemanly tactics isn’t going to change the outcome of a fight (your opponent will be in a better position to do these things). Hell, the person live drilling techniques is gonna have an advantage vs the person that can’t live drill these techniques.
Early MMA events (both early UFC and Vale Tudo Brazil come to mind), didn’t have the ball squeezing restrictions, and WC didn’t do any better on these events.
WC isn’t illegal in mma, some techniques (that many other martial arts have), are illegal in modern mma. WC just seems to have issues adjusting to different ranges of combat for this particular format.
And that’s about as respectful as I can be with such a loaded topic.

@@andrestrujillo6921 First of all, WC was created in the mind of being the weaker, so tricks are all around in this style, and let me now write off some of the techniques that are illegal (or might be, cuz I don't know all mma rules by heart):
      -Biu Jee (eye gouging strike),
-Fat Sao (and Fut Sao) (artery chopping strike),
-strikes into the laryx (well, I guess the reason is obvious?),
-Pai Jarn - elbow strike into the solar plexus (hurts af even while having chest guard on that negates most of the regular fists power - I was sparing with the body builder whose strikes were quite painful, leaving brusiers on and I was also sparring with a middle aged woman whose pai jarns hurt way more, it liretally could break your ribs just like that),
-Kop Jarn (elbow strike mostly applied on the back of the head OR on the spine)
-Gerk techniques (not all, but main kicking technique is knee snapping technique, and Anderson Silva is using it really often but instead snapping the knee he his the tight of the opponent)
-Balls kicking technique (forgot the kicking technique name)
So basicly, WC contains like 70% defence techniques and other 30% are attacking techniques that are mostly illegal so what are you saying about adapting? If Wing Chun have adapt to MMA it wouldn't be Wing Chun, but MMA (excluding wing chun).
Also, Wing Chun (or, lets say Wing Tsun, because that the Yip Man Legacy style I was learning for 5 years) is trained all arond the globe in elite forces such as:
FBI (USA), Marine Corps (USA), SWAT (USA), DEA (USA), RAID (France), GSG-9 (Germany), SEK (Germany), NOCS (Italy), GIP (Luxemburg), Indie anti-terrorist troops, Polish special forces, Hungary special forces - Si-Fu Szel Gabor is main instructor of their special forces (8th master degree) his master is Grand Master Si-Kung Norbert Maday (9th master degree, that took him, If I remember correctly approx. 20 years to archive, I was lucky enough to see him live also).
Moreover, what do you think about Krav Maga (that is like 70% made out of wing tsun?)
PS.: Elite Forces have shortned learning scheme so they don't learn the stlye for 5 years to be able to fight.

@@xSeonerx the historicity of WC/VT aside, even if I make the concessions that those are all banned techniques now (some are, some aren’t), still doesn’t answer how it didn’t do well in early MMA where all those techniques were available, or at least not as restricted.
All the forces mentioned have trained in other arts, that’s hardly a mention of any of these arts validity, and more of a concession on how good the sales team was.
Krav Maga may have chun, I’m yet to see KM as a valid martial art 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wing Chun has its strengths. It is very effective for trapping hands techniques and in close combats. Some MMA practitioners actually use Wing Chun techniques successfully. However, it should be enhanced with other martial arts techniques. Bruce Lee saw the limitations of the art, his Jeet Kune Do is still based on lots of Wing Chun techniques but he incorporated other arts for striking when you are at long distance to close the gap. It is not about the art, it’s all about the practitioner and how he understands the martial art.

Having ripped abs (mostly I mean strength by "ripped", definition is part of the equation but a lesser one- what you eat makes you cut, mostly, you can be effective without it. The first time I hit someone really strong in the gut it messed with my hand. I was definitely surprised because people in karate and tae kwon do, where I started, then wing chun went down from stuff like that. People in JKD and muay thai needed several. Eye gouging and groin kicks are such a tiny part of the curriculum of wing chun. Wing chun isn't illegal in mma. It just lacks popularity because there are a lot of bad wing chun schools that do not do sparring. As someone who practices wing chun, I can tell you there is no way in hell you are making this art work without sparring. It's absolutely necessary. Without sparring you'll never get used to taking a punch and you'll never be able to close the distance to the inside where the range is right for wing chun. Wing chun's main advantages that I like are it's deflections, hand traps and ability to feel out where an opponent's limbs are without actually seeing them. Combine wing chun with standard boxing, and you have a versatile striking art. Take BJJ for ground game and you will be a terror.

ok, wing chun is the first martial art I ever practiced and I have tremendous respect for the art, but the video is nonsense. I've noticed from other videos you are a wing chun fanatic and your points are frequently invalid on the matter. Where is it stated in MMA rules that Wing Chun is banned? Do you think that other martial arts didn't think of attacking eyes, groin and throat? Every martial art has these moves. If others can follow rules wing chun fighters should too. I think wing chun practioners don't compete sucessfully in MMA because they lack the right amount of sparring and conditioning, nothing else. And exactly because wing chun has no sport side there are no wing chun athletes with high level of physical conditioning, striking power, stamina etc. Of course there are many wing chun masters with tremendous technic, but that's good for teaching, not for competing.

Swivel the incoming punch away from you, grab the punch arm with your other hand and just lean your body weight onto your arm doing your bong sau and you dislocate your opponent's elbow. Do it quickly? Which, by the end of the first day? Yeah? You can do it? You go from punch being thrown at you to dislocated apponent's elbow in under 1/2 a second. It's all just one, fluid movement. Feels good to do as well. I asked what to do after that? My Sifu said they should grab the arm and go to ground. Then just stamp or kick the head. Wing Chun man. It's absolutely brutal. And that's the real problem with it - you simply can't use it. It's all eyes, throat, balls, popping joints and elbows to a kneeling opponent's back of the neck. Or throat. And if you miss and elbow their jaw? Meh, just try again. And it's all just one fluid movement. I watched a guy do his final trials for unarmed combat before he began his pole training? Dude. He was simply devastating. He was going from punch thrown at him to kill in under 2 seconds. Wing Chun is just murder, death, kill. All the techniques are just ways of using your apponents weight to set up and deliver the death blow.

As many of the comments have correctly observed, this video clearly shows that the people responsible for this video understand next to nothing about Wing Chun or MMA. Wing Chun is primarily about occupying center line and not meeting force with force. Many of its principles are indeed applicable in MMA, and are used frequently, but not under the banner of "Wing Chun". A PURE Wing Chun practitioner, however, would fare incredibly poorly in MMA, lacking sufficient knowledge of grappling, ground fighting, and a number of other techniques to defend themselves intelligently. Everything in fighting is about positional advantage, first and foremost. Any half-way intelligent modern martial artist understands this, and will therefore cross-train in a variety of styles and disciplines. It is entirely possible we will one day see an MMA champion who utilizes Wing Chun as their primary style, but NOT without adapting it for cage fighting. And NOT because eye-gouging, throat grabbing, ball kicking, or oblique kicks are "deadly" or "unfair" tactics, but simply because they are totally useless if you aren't in a position to execute them. In fact, these techniques are used all the time in MMA; either the fighter gets a warning, point deduction, OR they straight-up get away with it if the ref doesn't see or doesn't care. But yes; certain techniques are barred from usage in sports fighting to minimize the risk of injury. That certainly doesn't mean they aren't ever used, however.

Just not having a game plan for the ground is the greatest weakness of most of the eastern disciplines. They all have promise and potential when you are on your feet, but if it can’t adapt to the reality of unpredictable combat especially being taken to the ground it’s useless in a street fight and MMA. I don’t remember the quote or who said it, I think it was Bruce Lee, but it was along the lines of a “martial artist thats trained his whole life, will almost always lose to a grappler and boxer with only a year of training.”

A more detailed contention, one I would like you to contest if you are inclined, is that Wing Chun is a bad style for technique reasons.
The contention goes: there is more bad than good in Wing Chun, the footwork and positioning is bad. What is good in Wing Chun can be found better in other martial arts: the centerline is used in all striking arts, punching off the parry is taght in Muay Thai and boxing with better set up.
You suggested a fighter might use Wing Chun as a foundation. I want to know: what is uniquely good in that style?

thats his point, you cant use it in sparring or a match because you could blind someone or explode their balls or crush their wind pipe. Wing chun isnt designed as a sport to have sparring at matches its designed to terminate someone as quick as you can. if you had someone really use wing chun with no rules someone would end up seriously hurt. Every other martialk art has rules. wing chun has no rules, this is the problem hes pointing out. the reason people in wing chun "matches" get worked is because usually they are limited as to what they can do, whereas their training there is no limitations its a very dirty style of fighting. In mma theres no hitting in back of head, eyes, throat, groin, boxing no kicking, karate no knee kicks no groin kicks, thats why he mentioned jon jones gets looked down on for the wing chun knee kicks is because you could tear someones ligmanents or bust their knee cap with that kick, its a dirty kick, thats why people cant "playfully" fight with wing chun you will end up blind or not be able to walk for 6 months or get ur throat smashed. Its dirty fighting and thats not allowed in "sport" martial arts. wing chun and silat are designed to kill and use dirty techniques they arent meant for the ring or for full speed practicing. if the wing chun people could use the illegal moves itd be a diff story guy.

Short answer: it isn't in the slightest bit illegal in MMA.
Long answer: there isn't any Wing Chun because it's a martial art designed for very different purposes. Wing chun is primarily designed for a smaller person to defend against attacks. Wing Chun has never been about offense, except to incapacitate an opponent that will attack you after you've defeated them.

6:30 My character in the UFC 4 game is centered around kicking the lower abdomen and legs of his opponents to destroy them entirely so they can fight anymore, rather than going for knock outs or submissions. The game doesn't prevent you from doing something loke this, but in an MMA match in real life, it would absolutely get banned because you could essily kill your opponent with a lot of the techniques in many martial arts. Capoeria, for example, can use their lethal upward kicks and a lot of the dance like techniques they have because they can instantly kill people. Muy Tai can't use a lot of their elbow or knee techniques for the same reason. Many of the Wing Chun techniques are illegal in MMA due to the same reason, which is why Wing Chun is more for self defense in street brawls or fighting hand to hand in war.

One of China's 1st Dynasties were taking huge loses every time they captured a Shaolin temple. 20 monks killed with no armor or simple braided silk would kill the 1st Dynasty by there accounts in the 20 to 30 people range. (History is written by the winners) Others claimed in the hundreds, the truth probably closer to the former.
So one day they dragged a few out alive and demanded they teach there skill, they said no they were to busy trying to break the record of the fasted head roll in history. which it was probably pretty darn close. the last Monk said, yeah f@ck all that, what do you want to know? so he boiled the lifetime art of Shaolin Kung Fu, thousands of forms and styles into just 108 moves you can master in under a year. bare bones kung fu, not pretty, or fair, but now they had a chance, as for are trader monk, well if he sold out his own family would you ever trust him? They burned him alive upside down with a pick hammered in his mouth so he couldn't speak in his last moments. And just like all arts Martial Wing Chung has some brutal moves, and ridiculous ones too. it isn't "secret" and Steven Seagal didn't ban it like how he's banned from Waffle House. Wing Chun, per se, is not illegal. It's just that some of the some of the techniques taught in Wing Chun are illegal, but that can be said for A LOT of martial arts. If you take a go to a Jiu Jitsu school that focuses on self defense and not just sport, there is plenty you can't use in an MMA ring. I've trained Krav Maga for 20 years; there is A LOT you learn in Krav Maga that you can't use in a ring. But just like Krav teaches elbow strikes to the back of the neck, for example, that doesn't mean you can't use a lot of what you can learn in Krav. It just means you can't use elbow strikes to the back of the neck, and the same would apply to any martial art that teaches that.
Therefore, this video is stupid and misleading.

Punching someone really hard in the back of the head is illegal. That doesn't mean that boxing is banned in MMA.
There is NOTHING that Wing Chun does that boxing doesn't do better. I'd go so far as to say that Wing Chun is close to being functionally useless, which is why almost nobody uses it. Every single time someone says "this style isn't used in competition because so many of its techniques are illegal and/or too dangerous" that's code for "this style doesn't actually work in reality."
You can lump Krav Maga in there too. Krav Maga is the honey badger of martial arts; internet memes and massive overhype has turned it into something it isn't. Krav Maga is basically horseshit; at best, you might go to a krav maga gym and learn a carbon copy of MMA, with a lot of machismo bulshit thrown in. At worst, you'll spend a few hours watching grown men hit each other with foam bats and call it "weapon training".

Wing Chun is not illegal in MMA.
It has little to no effect in MMA, apart from a few things such as chain punching at close range, maybe oblique kicks...Ferguson mixes some into his game and it works for him. But I've seen a lot more long term practitioners of Wing Chun ditch their training and opt for weird looking 'Boxing' and Ground n Pound, the second they enter the cage 🤷‍♂️

I have been a wing chun man for thirty years or more. The only technique you wouldn't use is biu gee, finger strikes to the eyes. But if you can hit a target as small as an eye, you should be able to land a punch to the jaw for a knock out. Everything else is fine. Knee kicks, fine. Elbows, fine. Groin kicks? we don't really have groin kicks in Wing Chun. There is a lifting kick but mostly the kicks are for breaking the opponents stance. The reason you don't see Wing Chun in MMA is that it's not designed to use against a trained fighter. In a class you have a punch thrown so you can practice your responses. You do chi sau to develop sensitivity when you have arm to arm contact. But go visit a boxing gym and ask respectfully if you can get in a ring and spar with a guy who has trained more than six months and you will find most of your techniques are useless. Do this regularly and you will throw away half of what you know and make the rest work. Also you need to run, skip do bag work to have the lungs to fight for any period of time. In the end if your goal is to be a fighter it's more efficient to learn to box. If like me you do it because you enjoy it and it gives you an advantage over someone who is not a trained fighter stick with Wing Chun.

@@mountaintiger6945 I didn't say it doesn't work for self defense. If all you are interested in is self defense there are easier to learn systems, but once learned then what? A martial art is for most people a hobby, something they enjoy doing a few times a week for fun, fitness and to continually master new skills. Thousands of people ride horses every week. How many race competitively? So why bother riding? Life isn't all about competition and self defense.
