Located in the North Atlantic, between Norway and Iceland, The Faroe Islands are an autonomous Sate of the Kingdom of Denmark, located some 1,300 kilometers away from mainland Denmark. With their own parliament (one of the oldest in the world!), flag, national anthem, airline, and currency, these islands show they truly have their own identity.
There are 49,000 people, twice as many sheep and over 4 million birds that inhabit the archipelago’s 18 islands. Patriotic and welcoming, 92% of the islanders are native-born and over 80% of the population speaks a local dialect that emerged out of the capital, Tórshavn. Here, people are Faroese first, Danish second. The local Faroese dialect can be traced back to Old Norse, which was spoken by Vikings. Today, the language is a mix of West Norwegian, Icelandic, and many Danish loanwords.
Spectacular mountains, fjords and cliffs make up the archipelago’s scenery and it rains ups to 300 days a year. This harsh climate makes getting around impossible at times. The main islands are joined by bridges and tunnels, but some are accessible only by boat or helicopter, which is an affordable mode of transportation around these islands… weather permitting!
Securing food on these inhospitable islands has always been a challenge, but the Faroese have been very resourceful over time, having coined a unique technique to dry sheep meat, wild egg gathering on 3,400 metre high cliffs, along with (highly controversial) whale hunting. Although the economy rests on commercial fishing, getting food on the table remains a challenge as all other foods, or just about, are imported. Indeed, fresh fruits and vegetables are a rarity and highly costly on the Faroe Islands.
