      The Mandalorian is doing a good job of rebuilding Luke’s legend.
      We see him for the first time as an overpowered Jedi Master, destroying powerful enemies with ease. Then we see a training montage with him in the Book or Boba Fett. Both were really therapeutic for the fans after the garbage they pulled in the last trilogy.

      Not quite as good as the original. It's pretty much impossible to do a sequel where the audience wants you to replicate the original. It's almost as though folks would like it more IF THEY DIDN'T SEE THE ORIGINAL.

    • @fiattenebris
      @fiattenebris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      The original had so many corny moments, but it also had enough redeeming qualities that it stood the test of time. This new one plays to the nostalgia but develops more themes and upgrades the action sequences to 21st century levels of cinematography. Also, one thing I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did was the comic relief, that's an added plus that the first one did not have.

    • @colten53
      @colten53 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@za-ir5ni I agree. This is far superior to the original. The original is good for what it is, but it’s ultimately a collection of entertaining scenes stitched together for the most part, and the final dogfight really comes out of nowhere. This movie all about completing the mission. Everything they introduce in the film’s various training sequences come back at the end of the film as well as character traits. They even have a reason for the beach scene too beyond showing off attractive people. There’s also much more flying scenes in this movie than the original. I thought Jennifer Connelly was the stronger love interest as well, and the side characters were better too. In Top Gun 1, you basically just remember Maverick, Goose, and Ice Man. In this, I liked Rooster, Hang Man, Phoenix, and Bob in addition to the returning characters of Maverick and Ice.

    My dad flew f18s, and now he flies A4 Skyhawks, so it will be interesting to see his reaction to the movie. In reality, being a fighter pilot is really different from the movies but is still awesome. And for the most part yes they were filming in the air. Obviously not all of the stunts were 100% real but I actually got to see the F18 that they had all painted up for the movie. Because my dad is a fighter pilot, we went out to see his planes and then got invited to go inside the plane that filmed the shots in the air. It was awesome, full of camera equipment and had massive cameras outside.

    I particularly liked that some of the greatest feelings of tension and accomplishments weren’t even the combat as other movies have. Reaching mach 10 and showing that the run could be made were so amazing and showed that every movie doesn’t need massive scale, and that stakes don’t have to be world saving levels to be extremely meaningful. A lot of every day life successes are small for movies but when done right are huge.

    This movie fixes the main issue I had with the original, which is the lack of some stakes early on. I'm a Milenial and I have never watched Top Gun (original). I watched it this Friday, to know the characters. Although the dogfight scenes are cool and it must have been amazing back in the day, there was something weird about it. There were no stakes, at least not until what happens to Goose happens...It's a movie about some "kids" going to a school, and it is fun and all, but you know there are no big consequences for who graduate first in class. The fact that they have a certain mission with certain milestones to fulfill gives so much more tension for the movie. And the relationship between Maverick and Rooster gives the all too needed emotional stakes to the picture. If any flaw it has is that it becomes a little too much "mision-impossible"-y by the end. I would have preferred something more grounded. But great movie nevertheless

      I particularly liked the fact that the plot was so unpretentious: it was simple and straightforward but it worked. They also put some thought as to how they were going to make Val Kilmer's and Jennifer Connelly's characters fit into the narrative, incorporating Kilmer's current health condition as well as leveraging one of the obscure references in the original movie in Connelly's case. I've come across so many movies that try to push a complex and convoluted plot in an attempt to shock their audience, only to fall flat on their attempt and deliver a mediocre product in the end.

You literally feel like you are in the cockpit about ready to side-swipe a mountain at 700 mph. The overall movie does have a few cheeky flaws, but it still is astoundingly good for a sequel. Best action movie I've seen in many, many years, and incredibly good for a sequel in the sense that not only does it look 10x better than the original, it reminds you of exactly where it came from. I think Jennifer Connelly's character and plot line were actually essential to the movie. #1, part of this movie's story for Maverick, besides the whole Goose's son plot, is him realizing he can't fly forever... as the Iceman says to him "It's time to let go.". The idea of a life outside of the cockpit, and the Navy, where he settles down with Jennifer Connelly makes it easier for us to root for than the idea of him retiring and just sitting around lonely as shit because he has no family/friends due to his entire life being about flying. #2, without her, all Tom's character is surrounded by is superiors who don't like him, or subordinates he is training. Connelly lets us see the human sides of Maverick, and lets Tom charm it up a bit. Without her we'd just have scenes of superiors or Rooster yelling at Maverick, or Maverick making the rookies look like little bitches in the air... thats it.

    Just left the theater. 100% worth it. If you're going to open with Kenny Loggins, you've gotta be confident you've got something special. It wasn't just nostalgic; it subtly sets the tone, energy, and engagement for the audience.
    Watching it in San Diego as a vet was pretty special too. I'm NOT that person who's overzealous to let you know I was in the military, but this felt very much like it was made by people who have a deep love for the Navy. It's hard to explain to someone who's never spent deployments on a ship, but it was a consistent through line for me.
    The chemistry between Miles and Tom was incredible. I wasn't expecting to be moved by this film, but it genuinely carried what could've easily just been action set piece after action set piece.
    I will say, and maybe it's because I'm a little older now, I understood the purpose of Jennifer's character. She represented the "grounding" literally and figuratively of Maverick. They couldn't be together because every time he got himself into trouble, he found a way to be too valuable to the Navy to be retired, booted or (worse) assigned to a desk. In that regard, she was very much his choice between being a pilot and having nothing and nobody because he couldn't forgive himself, and having a family, but without a sense of purpose. The filmmaker's choice to play Penny as an independent woman who didn't NEED Maverick, but would choose him if he could choose her, was smart so as not to bog the rest of the story in unnecessary romantic drama. It was an "adult" relationship between two rational, successful, and caring people who understand how to communicate; frankly, as unusual as that is in films, it's kinda refreshing too.
    Also, special note for the Lady GaGa song, which was fantastic.

      Because over the years hes still going off and never has a reason to settle down.
      The fact that she ‘s not just an outsider character that serve for the purpose for Maverick to have a 2nd thought of have a family. Shes also a part of Top Gun as well even tho briefly mention. But it shows the history and also the fact they re-unite together shows Maverick’s growth as well, because when they first meet again , she still see him as this playboy, never settles-attitude in his face. So not only that, shes also contribute to his growth as well, and they complete each other.

    Just came out of the theatre on this one and WOW. This films actions sequences were so good. With all the CGI that seems to fill up every film these days, I’m incredibly grateful to see the use of practical effects brought to a level I haven’t seen since the first Jurassic park.
    I can’t remember the last time I seen an action movie that had my heart almost come out of my chest. Incredible work, great film. If you’re going to watch this, watch it in theaters, you will be blown away. Like my heart is still thumping, maybe I should get this checked. Also can’t wait to see Robo-cop 4K release on Blu-ray.

    I lost my dad 2 months ago. He was looking so forward to this one, but due to pandemic delays, it kept getting pushed back, and pushed back. We were planning to see it in December, originally, but they pushed it back one more time for the summer movie season (And because I don't think they wanted to go up against No Way Home). Unfortunately, dads condition deteriorated to the point that he couldn't leave the house. So even if he was still here, I don't think he'd be able to. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was on the verge of tears thinking about all this during my first viewing. So it will always have special meaning to me. Well, I have totally different view about Penny Benjamin. She is not only relevent, but also
    a significant supporting character only next to Rooster and Ice Man. We saw the other part of Maverick through Penny and this can't be done in other way. This made Maverick deeper and complete, he is not almighty and invincible, he need someone know his true thinking. Also, Penny encouraged/pushed Maverick to fight one last chance in 'Maverick's way' and changed the situation, which is a big part of the story. Penny is also a pivotal part of the bar scene in act 1, which set up all characters in the movie.
