    12:24 I absolutely love this! I am a newly converted Christian, having went all in back in April 2022. This would have been a lovely set to have to get my grasp on the themes and tone of the Bible.
    The nature and writ of the Bible was very overwhelming, and almost off putting in a way. It was a lot to ingest and take in, and the format of it didn’t really help much either.
    But this set is absolutely lovely. I REALLY want to get my hands on a set of these!
    also that wood case is stellar, no cap, looks like a billion bucks

    I don't want to sound like "that guy," because these are clearly beautiful renditions of the Holy Bible, but as a Tridentine Roman Christian, I have seen others in my group talk about how good of a Bible it appears to be, but refuse to get it, given the word "apocryphal" makes it seem as if the books we believe are in the Canon are not legitimate, and also includes books that aren't even in the Deutrocanon, such as the Prayer of Manasses, or III and IV Maccabees.
    🙏From your brother in Christ.

      @justanotherrandomfilipino9018 Byzantine Catholics are in communion with Rome and have similar liturgies to the eastern orthodox. Byzantine Catholics still believe in the exact same things that all other rites do, and just have a different look and feel in its liturgy. The orthodox however left the Catholic church and are no longer in communion in Rome. They don't believe I. The Filioque or Papal supremacy. There's other things that are different such as the Catholics using the Greogorian calendar rather than the Julian calendar that we used to use, but the orthodox still use it.

    "They even got Biblical language experts in". I would have thought that would be where they would have started, rather than a nice afterthought. Not having chapter or verse references would also seem to make it rather impractical. And anyway, Isn't there something a little decadent about turning Bibles into luxury consumer goods?

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I'm confident that working with the experts was much more than an afterthought... and the removal of verse numbers, for me, makes for a really nice reading experience (and much more like it would have been written originally). I understand the critique of luxury... but I would argue that this is going for something much more meaningful than just being high quality.

      Don't knock it till you try it. The current versification of the Bible is only a few centuries old, and the cross references much more recent. We may not think we pay attention to the "interruptions" of cross references, textual notes and verses, but we do. Reading the Bible through without these graphic interruptions is a very different experience and a whole new way to digest God's Word. Don't throw out your study Bible, but I really recommend getting a reader's Bible like this. There are now hardcover versions of the ESV Reader's Bible for $25-35.

    Among all the BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL bibles we've seen on this channel and over the course of the Christmas giveaway, this now is a well earned break from all the greatness and grandeur we've seen. I've been so excited over the last couple of weeks that now I am really happy to see a bible that doesn't appeal to me AT ALL. I mean - I dislike how the texts sit on the page, I am bored to death by the typeface, can't feel anything about this edition at all - and I am happy about that, for after all, we need things we don't like to be able to appreciate what we like even more. With this, Bibliotheca fulfills a purpose for me, too, though I'd probably very much prefer the cheapest edition from the scrap table.

    Torn on this one... I own it but am concerned to use it because of the cloth covers getting dirty. It sits on my shelf unused.

    You said you'd talk about what's next for them but what is next for them? The translation they did in other options? Different translations in this binding? Individual gospels or psalms? I love this set but I'd love to see the idea and concept grow.

    I was wondering how they rendered the _Divine Name,_ and I guess *YHWH* is one of the best. As I recall, the 1901 ASV used _"Jehovah",_ which is a bit inaccurate. I know that a recent translation uses *_"Yahweh",_* which is actually what I prefer.
    As classy as this boxed set is, I would love to see this translation in a more affordable format. I will check the website. Maybe they have produced it by now. You know, I love the wide margins, but I'd almost hesitate to *WRITE* in them in such a _"collectible"_ item!

    Hi Tim, ESV has something similar to this. A bit more expensive though. Have you checked it out?
    Also, look into The Hebrew Bible by Robert Alter.

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes... I've reviewed the ESV set (I think they got their inspiration from Bibliotheca), and I'm a bog fan of Alter's work!

  • @kirbysmith4135

    I hate to be the fly in the ointment, Tim, but I don't like this at all. ASV is fine. But the expense! Also, without the chapters and verses, it reminds me of The Message before they added the chapters and verses.
    If they made this into a "regular" bible, and put it into one volume, I would be much more favorable to it.
    Now having said that, I really do appreciate your channel. Keep up the good work!

      Agreed.
      I’ll be very honest, if I got this given to me, I’d probably sell it as it’s only going to sit on the shelf never to be used.
      Like a copy of The Message I bought at a thrift store (an impulse buy, I had to take a look, you understand lol).

    Tim, are you going to do a video on new bibles that will be coming out in 2023? I think Allan will/may be doing an NIV Proclamation Bible in 2023. Love to see if you can confirm and what new bibles other publishers will be doing. Maybe you’ve already done this and I missed it. God bless!
