  • Thank you to our Supreme Patron Vlad for this WACKY request...
I had no idea what that beginning was about but it certainly intrigued me... but damn once those drums and bass kicked in... wow! What a funky, progressive sound. And the vocalist totally reminded me of Mike Patton. He was certainly a wacky dude. I want to hear more!!

Gong are a trip. Their sound evolved greatly over the length of their career. This is from their super trippy phase. They morphed into a jazz fusion outfit for a while, too.

I count myself very lucky to have seen Gong live and even to have spent time with Didier Malherbe who plays saxes for them in their peak period. Big fan too of Steve Hillage solo work who is absolutely worth checking out too. Goodness you are about to tap into one rich vein of musical mania.

The guitarist, Steve Hillage, recorded his first solo album ("Fish Rising") back to back with the recording of the Gong album that this track appears on ("Angel's Egg") - hence pretty much the same lineup and similar groove. Both fantastic albums.

Gong for all their hippie leanings underneath were serious jazzers! I absolutely love this version - and this version was THE one to listen to.Good choice mate.

I went to the Gong Unconvention in Amsterdam in 2006 and was totally blown away by every performance. You will probably love guitarist Steve Hillage's solo work. One of the many offshoots of Gong is Pierre Moerlen's Gong, which is much more fusion-y and less trippy. Daevid Allen could mesmerize you when speaking to you. He had a wizardly way about him that was tangible. Enjoy your space trip. You will probably also like Hawkwind for more space rock.

I seriously considered going to that exact event, I had money for the tickets, a hostel, and the flight, but not for the train to the airport... I'm not actually that regretful looking back, I was a very naive 16 year old and going to Amsterdam on my own at that time could very easily have ended badly.

The double album, “Gong Live Etc”, has three sides of trippy psychedelic music and a fourth side of jazz fusion music. It’s an excellent album.

Welcome to Space Rock! Incredible musicians doing mad stuff 🙂Leader/Vocalist Daevid Allen (who was Australian) was a founder member of Soft Machine along with Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt (among others) before forming Gong when he went to France with Soft Machine and then wasn't allowed back into England!!. Steve Hillage was in the bands Khan and Archazel with another Canterbury Scene genius, keyboardist Dave Stewart, who was in Hatfield & The North and National Health.

This is what many would consider to be the 'classic' line up of Gong. They are still gigging and making records today. Each member your watching has gone on to further success but I will bring up their bassist Mike Howlett as an example.
He is a Grammy award winning record producer.
Flock of Seguls no1. single 'Wishing' in the UK was produced by him.. Marther and the Muffins, Blancmange, Tears for Fears, Joan Armatrading are just a few of his production work credits that had big chart success in the UK. He teaches music production at Ealing University in west London and has a PHD in Music.... He is also a very nice chap, having met him on several occasions.
Guitarist Steve Hillage is still very much on the music scene, gigging his solo back catalogue as well as his techno dance act System 7.
Tim Blake on keyboards went on to join Hawkwind, plus he has released a plethora of solo keyboard albums.
Peirre Morlan on drums has sadly passed away but made a load of jazz rock albums under the Gong banner.
Didier Malherbe on Sax is still playing in his own trio.
And we can't leave out their defacto leader and vocalist Daevid Allen who up until his death a few years back was still the driving force in the band regardless of the very many line-up changes the band had since their formation in 1969.

The music of my teen years...In the 1980s and 90s I was an engineer at Electric Lady, Hit Factory and Criteria studios. We made some great records, but sadly no prog.
I bought my first bass from one of Gentle Giants roadcrew (a Vox clubman..which turned out to have a plywood body) and the first major gig we went to was in 1971..Van Der Graaf Generator with Genesis as opening act.. LOL. Happy Days,
Keep up the great work, I love the show..its wonderful to see this great body of music being appreciated by people who are almost young enough to be my grand children...

He did indeed and actually got sacked. Why? He couldn't/wouldn't just let go and improvise - a sin in Gongs camp, so Daevid Allen showed him the door.

It was late '74, a single short European 'You' tour. There are Oslo & Rotterdam recordings out there. You can tell it's Bill right away from the snare sound. He wasn't a good fit for them in many ways, though. By 75-76 Pierre had come back.

They're still going strong today, although none of the original members are in the band (frontman Daevid Allen passed away in 2015), so effectively they are now Gong - The Next Generation. A new album is due out before the end of the year.

Listen to the , "Angel's Egg" version. The intro on this video has nothing to do with the song at all. They were actually chanting, "AUM" before they started. Mike Howlett and Pierre Moerlen, Bass and drums respectively, do the intro on the album recording... Didier on sax, and Steve Hillage on guitar, along with Tim Blake on synth' are the classic Trilogy Gong line up.

Acid is right! They were many a tripper's favourite band (along with Hawkwind) in the early 70's. The mad hats come from the band's mythology of the "Pot Head Pixies"... long story!

In some ways, what Daevid Allen is doing is conducting the band. I think Gong pissed some people off because a bunch of irresponsible space hippies shouldn't be able to play this damn good. I know they pissed Christian Vander off when Gong and Magma shared bills in the 70s. The ill will apparently was mutual, given that Allen after that pretty much called Vander a Nazi (which, as much as I love Magma, Vander probably is to some extent).

  • @VladimirChupin
    @VladimirChupin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

You may wish to pay attention to their live albums, they are also in that collection which I shared with you. GONG is one of the very few bands which are, in my opinion, sound better live. Another band in this league is Deep Purple, and the more recent addition is BAND-MAID.
Maybe Led Zeppelin could be added to this list also, but there are not so many live recordings of their concerts available, so, it's difficult to tell. But on the other hand, their studio versions were so good that I would not say lives were better. Different, that's for sure, but not better.
It takes a lot of talent and discipline to play live without lowering the quality. For example, King Crimson, in my opinion, was not successful in this. Van der Graaf Generator has a very interesting live album Vital, maybe you'll get to it one day. And you've heard Theme One live already. But if you check the other songs from that Belgium TV session, where Peter Hammill is present, I would say they are not as mesmerizing as the studio versions.
BAND-MAID, as you also have seen, often rearrange their songs for live performances, adding extra intros or guitar/bass battles. And of course, Omajinai Time is what all Maidiacs are waiting for each time 😁
BAND-MAID walks a tightrope between reproducing the studio versions note-for-note and adding something interesting to the live versions to make the concert-goers feel that they get something unique for their money. They don't really do improvisations on stage like the old bands did. In the past, people often went to live shows expecting to hear something different from the vinyl versions they listened to a hundred times. But although BAND-MAID does not do it, always playing by a click track, it is universally recognized that they are better live. Which to me is an amazing phenomenon.
I don't know if you will ever find time to make a review of any entire live album of GONG, but you must know that there are real treasures there, only waiting for you to open the chest box 🙂
