      Three Forty Three & her sister, Fire Fighter II are an enormous waste of money. Marine Div needed to be reequipped after 9/11 but these two oligarch yachts were uncalled for. The newer, smaller boats are much faster than any previous FBs or these two newer, large ones. They cost a fraction of the large boats & take much, much smaller crews. Keep in mind, the Port of NY & NJ is long past its peak of commercial harbor activity. Many of the piers & warehouses have been demolished. A fire on a garbage barge is not an uncommon occurrence & can be stubborn but poses little risk.

      Both marine units were paid for in large part by $54 million in grants from the Department of Homeland Security - this grant has a stipulation that makes these boats a multi-state resource. They respond up and down the east coast as needed. Thus not only protecting the ports of NY and NJ.

      That why Command had Marine BC & BC11 go assess the barge to see if was okay to tow it or whether there was too much fire & smoke to safely board & hook up. Haz mat risks & crew safety are the paramount concerns in a situation like this.

      I actually live in the Chicago suburbs, and have never been to NYC. I know a lot, but I don’t know every detail about the FDNY …or even the Chicago Fire Department for that matter.
      I know that Chicago’s 90-foot-long fire boat (called Engine Company 2, and named after Firefighter Christopher Wheatley of Truck Company 2, who died in the line of duty in 2010) has red and green emergency lights (port and starboard side, respectively). The smaller boats that they have also have the red and green lights. (As do most of the apparatus on land) I’m not sure if any of the boats have a siren, but of course they do have air horns.

    • @agontop1
      @agontop1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Same amount of oxygen inside or out. Towing the barge out is safer. Possibly saves the building structure from the heat, smoke conditions rapidly dissipate and reflash watch easily controlled if the barge is in the middle of the river. Always much safer for personnel to operate at a distance than in confined areas
