I ride at least 3 days per week out in public and have been dealing with dogs for 15 years.
My experience is that I usually have more control over my horse if I’m on his back: lots of contact with my seat, legs and reigns, in addition to my voice.
Another technique is to keep the horse facing the dog at all times, try not to allow it to get behind the horse.
Another technique, admittedly aggressive is to chase the dog with your horse. That always gets the attention of the owner…

I’m a former horse mom, and a new dog mom. My best advice is to communicate with the dog handler to make it very clear how to handle the situation besides just leashing the dog (like stepping off trail to let you pass, etc). Where I live, dog handlers really only experience horses on trail at the state parks, and it is rare enough that they won’t know what to do in the moment. Most dog handlers will follow your instructions to the best of their ability.

Good stuff! I would recommend pepper gel, though, as spray can go everywhere, including you and your horse. I love that your husband rides his bike while you ride! I'll be starting my 3 year old next year, and he'll bike with me on the trails sometimes.

I just got my first horse in June, (I've been following you for awhile, even before I got my horse) I have two dogs and have been working to get both my Mare and my dogs used to each other, it's been a process for one of my dogs. But running into a random dog, that was my biggest fear and why I haven't ridden her outside our property yet (lots of loose dogs, with no owners around) and in all my searches, this is the best video I've seen addressing that. Thank you ❤❤

Just this weekend we started getting our border collie Aki used to horses. He's six months and is going through a phase of having an absolute barking fit at anything and everything (he was such a sweet calm friendly puppy just a month or so ago, completely fine with all sorts of animals! 🥲).
We took him to an acquaintance who has two horses. They were so chill being barked at. Completely ignored the freaking out dog, continued to graze just a foot away. I even rode one of the horses, she did not mind passing by Aki (who was still having a fit) and having him behind her. I was so impressed.
We will definitely have to go at least a few more times and I'm already looking forward to it.

I went on a trail ride a long a creek and we came across a group that had more dogs than people. The dogs went crazy barking and trying to get to the horses. The person at the front owned all of the horses and she took her lead rope and started swinging the heavy clip end in circles and was ready to hit the dogs if need be.

      @mariepigen08 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's never an appropriate response to threaten the dogs like that. I may hate dogs myself, but I don't condone animal abuse. Also in some cases that will only make the dogs more aggressive.

    • @Jumbaladore
      @Jumbaladore หลายเดือนก่อน +10

@mariepigen08 it's not animal abuse when an animal is attacking you. Do you think it's animal abuse to use pepper spray?

One of my rescue dogs is both a barker and a scaredy cat. When my filly was younger he used to love to run and bark at her and she would run away and kick up her heels. I was halfway hoping shed give him a little kick and teach him a lesson.
Then one afternoon I was taking a break from picking up manure and decided to just watch them instead of intervene. The dog would chase and bark at the baby, run a circle around her and go lay down. Then the filly would turn, run directly to the dog, make a fast turn nearly in his face and run awy. The dog knew it was his turn and he would take off after the horse.
Whatched the two of them do this for about 20 minutes and realized it was just a game to both of them.
There are tons of dogs on the property of where I live that are allowed to run free for a while every day. I try to walk and hadgraze my mare when a bunch of the dogs are out. Some will run up barking others just run around like crazy as usual, but she's so used to it now she pays no attention to them for the most part. Months ago one dog would not stop harassing her and she just turned around and gave him a kick. Not hard, but the way she disciplines her own baby. Only his ego was hurt. He leaves her alone now.

Great advice! I was always wondering what I should do if a dog comes at my horses, I like your tips especially the one where you disengage the hind quarters and try to grab the dogs collar, my horses are very used to dogs, their energy and barking, we pass them on the trail all the time but once a walker had his big dog off leash and he didn’t see us coming around the corner but I saw them so I just turned around and went back where we came from and the dog stayed with his owner but you are right the owner never thought to call the dog and leash it, so horse riders have to be alert and wise!!! Thanks for this video ❤

hey my horse has kissing spine and a minor swayback. ive been working her for a couple weeks and building muscle in her back, and shes built a lot of muscle on her thoracic region but not so much on her withers or lumbar. theres some building sure but not as much as i would like. i dont have any hills or sand or an enclosed arena.. ive been lunging her for 3 days and giving her a day off and doing another 3 days of lunging after that probably for a little over a week but recently i gave her 3 days off so i didnt stress her joints too much. ive also been doing stretches after warming her muscles, bringing her front legs up and out, bringing her back legs out and under her but not too much because her back issues makes picking up her back feet a bit painful. also stretching her head under and between her legs and bringing her nose to her hip. i usually do 5 circles of walking 5 circles of trotting each way on the flat ground and some days ill do poles or risen poles and sometimes ill do 5 circles walking 5 circles trotting each way over the poles, sometimes 5 circles walking 3 circles trotting or 3 circles walking 2 circles trotting. i lunge her on a normal lead rope so she has to bend and balance more. ive read that hill work is really good for building muscles in their hind end but.. i dont have hills. basically i have 3 poles and i just spent $160 on the farrier (a trim for 2 horses) so i dont really have money to buy a bunch of stuff.. should i just keep doing what ive been doing? will the muscle come around? its only been about a week and a half i cant expect too much. do you have any recommendations? shes also getting quite bored doing the same thing over and over again.. also shes okay to ride lightly for a little bit, but its not like i could get on and start trotting and going out on trails or anything. she also has separation anxiety and gets really upset when i take her away from her friend. i need help!!😞

Good video, but the best defense is attack, my technique that I have used, first of all my horse is not afraid of dogs, so when I have been galloping or trotting I turn and chase the dogs while my horse "sultan" tries of biting them or running over them...and those dogs have already learned their lesson...except for an Australian sheepdog who still hasn't learned

    • @Kelly_Ben

I surely hope you're only "attacking" after the dogs have shown actual aggression. As both a dog and horse owner, if ANYONE mowed down my sweet, non aggressive, but large and scary looking, GSD, just assuming he was dangerous and approaching on the trail with me not far behind... trust me when I say the dog will be the least of their concerns.
Your comment absolutely vhas some valuable info, but is given with zero context and comes off like someone recommending busting out a car window to "save" a dog on a cloudy 50° day.

This is a great video. I have had a lot of dog interaction in my neighborhood when I ride my horse because a lot of people are irresponsible and don’t keep their dogs in the yard or chained up. Most of the time dogs approach me barking. I use the voice like you demonstrated, but there have been times when the voice didn’t work and in that case, I usually turn my horse to face the animal. And keep yelling lol
I used to get off my horse and yell and run at the dog, but then I found that I was putting myself in harms way. One of my horses will kick a real aggressive dog the other one just kind of stands there.
Loose dogs have gotten me in trouble with certain owners, but I informed them if their dog hurts my horse there will be a lot of trouble. Local law enforcement tells me I’m within my rights to do whatever I have to do to protect Myself and my horse. I would never want to harm another person‘s animal, but I just wish some owners would be more responsible.
I know there are times when a dog will get loose and it’s not the owners fault but the ones that are out and running all the time are definitely owner error. I love your videos and I love to respond because I’m old and live by myself with my two dogs and two horses. God bless you, Colin, Tucker, Ruach and your puppy who I can’t remember its name, but I have two little ones just like him.

At out barn we have about 4-7 dogs there (some are the barns some are the peoples) as well as many cats so we never really have to worry about them spooking at dogs because we have a baby corgi all the way up to a large crossbreed. Only thing I worry about is the dog being aggressive towards the horses. Hasn’t happened yet but I’m worried one day it will.

I LOVE dogs and I'd love to be a responsible dog owner but damn I hate it when people let their pups off leash where they aren't supposed to be, and here's why:
    - Wildlife - and livestock - being harassed by unleashed dogs burn calories which they may desperately need for survival, especially in winter and in inclement weather. More livestock in North America are killed by domestic dogs than by any native predator, including coyotes. (Wolves, often blamed for livestock casualties, rarely ever kill any statistically.) Dogs are a leading cause of death for livestock after inclement weather and dystocia (difficult birth.)
    - Wildlife and other dogs carry pathogens and parasites which could pass to your pup, including ones like distemper which could kill your dog.
    - Wildlife hate dogs and can respond violently to them. For example, off leash dogs can bring bears back to you, leading to both you and your pup potentially having an extremely bad day. Wolves and coyotes see dogs as threats to their finite food resources and may flatout kill your pup. Frightened rattlesnakes may envenomate your pup, possibly leading to Fido's death within hours.
    - Hazards exist off trail which you may not be aware of, including cliffs, holes, rivers, and most frightening of all - traplines, which cannot discriminate between your dog and target wildlife species. Every year pet dogs and cats are killed by these traps.
    - If your dog isn't leashed you may not see it poop, and its feces may contaminate water sources which YOU depend upon! Feces are a major spreader of pathogens!
    - Lastly: your off leash dog may act nice for you but be an utter jerk to strange people, other dogs, and animals like horses and hiking cats. Dogs, like kids, can behave differently when their parents aren't looking...
    - Vehicles like logging trucks, trains, ATVs and dirtbikes could accidentally kill your pet.
Basically, letting your dog off leash in unsecured areas is dangerous. Play in a fully fenced area instead!

My horse was attacked by a pit bull while riding once. I was riding on a dead end road and the owners were on their porch. They didn’t do a thing, just sat there and watched while their dog bit my horses legs and barked. My horse would not kick, she was so upset but refused to kick out. I ended up having to get off and chase this stupid dog around and around my poor mare. After about 5 minutes of me trying to grab and kick the dog, they sent their son to grab it while I rode away. Thankfully the dog never broke the skin on my mare but she was really shaken up.

It covered all the grounds. You are Alpha to your horse or the dogs. It's good to stay calm and proactive. I ride a lot but don't have my own horse. Here in Australia there are laws forbidding to walk dogs in the forests. I do rescue greyhounds and I use leash as a whip when there were random lose dogs running around wanting to charge...

Dogs can cause many problems with horses. In case You're on the ground you can grab a stone, many dogs will run away. Funny how you can bark like a dog.
A dog mostly start to bark when the horse is trotting or cantering, but many dogs start to bark when they see a horse because they're scared of horses and try to defend himself with attacking.
It's true that many people don't know nothing about horses, they don't realise they're fly animals, because they think they're strong and big and brave.😊
