I just got my first horse in June, (I've been following you for awhile, even before I got my horse) I have two dogs and have been working to get both my Mare and my dogs used to each other, it's been a process for one of my dogs. But running into a random dog, that was my biggest fear and why I haven't ridden her outside our property yet (lots of loose dogs, with no owners around) and in all my searches, this is the best video I've seen addressing that. Thank you ❤❤
We went trail riding kast Saturday we did meet a couple of people walkinh their dogs but they were very responsible owners and made their dogs behave , thanks for the tips good advice 😊
I went on a trail ride a long a creek and we came across a group that had more dogs than people. The dogs went crazy barking and trying to get to the horses. The person at the front owned all of the horses and she took her lead rope and started swinging the heavy clip end in circles and was ready to hit the dogs if need be.
It's never an appropriate response to threaten the dogs like that. I may hate dogs myself, but I don't condone animal abuse. Also in some cases that will only make the dogs more aggressive.
Thank you. This was useful. My horse was attacked by three dog on a trail, many years ago. I fell off and broke my back. I'm back in the saddle, but I'm scared of hacking out now.
Good stuff! I would recommend pepper gel, though, as spray can go everywhere, including you and your horse. I love that your husband rides his bike while you ride! I'll be starting my 3 year old next year, and he'll bike with me on the trails sometimes.
Great advice! I was always wondering what I should do if a dog comes at my horses, I like your tips especially the one where you disengage the hind quarters and try to grab the dogs collar, my horses are very used to dogs, their energy and barking, we pass them on the trail all the time but once a walker had his big dog off leash and he didn’t see us coming around the corner but I saw them so I just turned around and went back where we came from and the dog stayed with his owner but you are right the owner never thought to call the dog and leash it, so horse riders have to be alert and wise!!! Thanks for this video ❤
This is a great video. I have had a lot of dog interaction in my neighborhood when I ride my horse because a lot of people are irresponsible and don’t keep their dogs in the yard or chained up. Most of the time dogs approach me barking. I use the voice like you demonstrated, but there have been times when the voice didn’t work and in that case, I usually turn my horse to face the animal. And keep yelling lol I used to get off my horse and yell and run at the dog, but then I found that I was putting myself in harms way. One of my horses will kick a real aggressive dog the other one just kind of stands there. Loose dogs have gotten me in trouble with certain owners, but I informed them if their dog hurts my horse there will be a lot of trouble. Local law enforcement tells me I’m within my rights to do whatever I have to do to protect Myself and my horse. I would never want to harm another person‘s animal, but I just wish some owners would be more responsible. I know there are times when a dog will get loose and it’s not the owners fault but the ones that are out and running all the time are definitely owner error. I love your videos and I love to respond because I’m old and live by myself with my two dogs and two horses. God bless you, Colin, Tucker, Ruach and your puppy who I can’t remember its name, but I have two little ones just like him.
Dogowners are many times like car or scooterdrivers who don't know nothing about horses, because they think that horses are brave and strong because they're so big. So they don't respect the horses and their owners.
My horse was attacked by a pit bull while riding once. I was riding on a dead end road and the owners were on their porch. They didn’t do a thing, just sat there and watched while their dog bit my horses legs and barked. My horse would not kick, she was so upset but refused to kick out. I ended up having to get off and chase this stupid dog around and around my poor mare. After about 5 minutes of me trying to grab and kick the dog, they sent their son to grab it while I rode away. Thankfully the dog never broke the skin on my mare but she was really shaken up.
I think his feet are sore, he won't weight bear on his front legs while standing, specifically left front leg. He keeps shifting his weight, seems annoyed by the shoes or uncomfy. Great video!❤
This really helped me Carmella! I've been in a situation where many dogs were coming and barking at me and I was on a mare on the highway and I was galloping and suddenly dogs started to chase me so this really helped me for what to do next time!! I really love you all so much I will support you forever! You are the best and keep doing what you are doing!! Whenever I watch your videos I just get happy and I just get motivated! You are my biggest fan Carmella ❤!! All the best Carmella, be safe, happy journey and have fun and God bless you all so much ❤❤🐎💙💙!!! Can I feed sweet potato to horses? And do you feed grain, if you do what grain do you feed??
I just ran into a bag of sweet potato Horse treats (that looked like dried slices of sweet potato) at my local feed store so I think they are OK. God bless you.
Just this weekend we started getting our border collie Aki used to horses. He's six months and is going through a phase of having an absolute barking fit at anything and everything (he was such a sweet calm friendly puppy just a month or so ago, completely fine with all sorts of animals! 🥲). We took him to an acquaintance who has two horses. They were so chill being barked at. Completely ignored the freaking out dog, continued to graze just a foot away. I even rode one of the horses, she did not mind passing by Aki (who was still having a fit) and having him behind her. I was so impressed. We will definitely have to go at least a few more times and I'm already looking forward to it.
At out barn we have about 4-7 dogs there (some are the barns some are the peoples) as well as many cats so we never really have to worry about them spooking at dogs because we have a baby corgi all the way up to a large crossbreed. Only thing I worry about is the dog being aggressive towards the horses. Hasn’t happened yet but I’m worried one day it will.
Good video, but the best defense is attack, my technique that I have used, first of all my horse is not afraid of dogs, so when I have been galloping or trotting I turn and chase the dogs while my horse "sultan" tries of biting them or running over them...and those dogs have already learned their lesson...except for an Australian sheepdog who still hasn't learned
I surely hope you're only "attacking" after the dogs have shown actual aggression. As both a dog and horse owner, if ANYONE mowed down my sweet, non aggressive, but large and scary looking, GSD, just assuming he was dangerous and approaching on the trail with me not far behind... trust me when I say the dog will be the least of their concerns. Your comment absolutely vhas some valuable info, but is given with zero context and comes off like someone recommending busting out a car window to "save" a dog on a cloudy 50° day.
Um, no, you are def not safer. Your horse has hooves to kick, you have nothing to protect you on the ground, you'll get torn up. Safer to stay on the horse and let it defend itself and try to get away.
Dogs can cause many problems with horses. In case You're on the ground you can grab a stone, many dogs will run away. Funny how you can bark like a dog. A dog mostly start to bark when the horse is trotting or cantering, but many dogs start to bark when they see a horse because they're scared of horses and try to defend himself with attacking. It's true that many people don't know nothing about horses, they don't realise they're fly animals, because they think they're strong and big and brave.😊

@mariepigen08 it's not animal abuse when an animal is attacking you. Do you think it's animal abuse to use pepper spray?

This is aweful; I am sorry you went through that!
Oh no , im afraid of meeting dogs that owners can't control 😢
@@CarmellaAbel Your advice is useful,though🙂
Thanks for the tips! I look forward to hearing about the hoof boots!!
You always have the best advice for horse owners! Great day yesterday….btw. 🇺🇸😉 Take care and be blessed ! 💙🐴🙏🏻

Great info, Carmella. Thanks 💚
Really good info, thank you!
Love hornless saddles 😍
Great tips! I would get off m y horse immediately! But I don’t risk going out anymore anyway!

Wow, that is an aweful situation; I’m glad both of you are at least OK physically!
@ thank you so much ❤️ all helpful information in your video btw!

He just doesn’t like to stand still, he’s always been like that 😅. He’s like that on the ground too

Also, a citronella spray or a small air horn MIGHT deter a dog. I have seen both used effectively at dog parks!

You’re always safer on the ground than on your horse so when there’s a situation like that, get off
Except if you get off, what if the dog starts attacking you?
