The medal he got was the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest award in the US military. It is awarded "for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force." My guess is that this was awarded posthumously in World War I. What's impressive is that an African American soldier was given this award.
That was the first thing that crossed my mind. Thank you for pointing that out! Given the time period, I think it speaks even more for his heroic and kind actions he performed during the war, to be acknowledged even in spite of that
@ThiefRikku0306 oh for sure, I know about all that stuff but I wasn't thinking about all of that while watching a Disney princess movie. I appreciate the comment putting real life perspective into the cartoon
Tianas father may have sacrificed himself to save his comrades in battle. That would be in his nature and would definitely be worthy of the distinguished service award
Tiana's father is one of my favorite parents in Disney Princess movies. Not only was he kind and loving, but like Belle's father, he was actively encouraging her to peruse her dream and do whatever she wanted in order to be happy without question.
I wish that James had been able to meet Naveen, I think they would have really enjoyed each other's company, and Naveen would've learned a lot from James. An excellent role model for all dads, he's definitely my favorite Disney background character!
I love how Tiana's father was portrayed. He went against the stereotype of the black man leaving his family, he worked so hard and you could tell he loved his family
He most likely died in WW1 . The movie's main events are confirmed to have been set in 1926. Since Tiana was 19 during the main plot and appeared to be around 5 in the beginning, the movie would have started around 1912. Since WW1 went from 1914-1918, that means Tiana was only a child or a preteen when her dad passed away. So sad... Edit: In "The Little Mermaid", when Grimsby is bringing Eric back to the castle, Eric says something about the princess of Glowerhaven, who was most likely another girl Grimsby had tried to set him up with in the past. Can you please do a video on that?? I know a lot of people have been requesting it recently. Another edit (lol): Thanks for making this video. It's really important to place Tiana's story in context. New Orleans was STILL apart of the segregated South. That's really important to remember. The military reflected this as well. Through out history from Buffalo Soldiers to freedom fighters to the Tuskegee Airman, the first all black pilot squadron. Historically, Americans were called to fight in conflicts but African Americans or Black Americans were not acknowledged for their contribution. The likelihood that her father received the Distinguished Cross would not have come so soon. It might have come years later, in the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement.
Well, maybe not in the 60s most of the US fought to keep segregation a thing. Some branches desegregated in the 1980s while some schools are still segregated today but mostly with the districting sending minority students to one underfunded school while they send white kids to a well funded one

If he had died in the war it likely would’ve included a Purple Heart. The Purple Heart medal is awarded to anyone injured while in combat for the military, and that includes soldiers that are mortally wounded and die. But I guess they could’ve just kept the more prestigious medal in plain view and left the Purple Heart aside. It takes a special kind of man just too serve in the military at all but some soldiers can get over a dozen Purple Hearts without ever getting mortally wounded or earning any more prestigious medal. For a black man to get a medal that prestigious in that time period though he would have had to have done something absolutely outstanding so the chance he earned that much notice for something he survived seems unlikely so maybe you’re right.

I think it’s even more heartbreaking knowing that during this period, African-Americans were even struggling to receive benefits they were owed by the government for serving or losing a family member in the war on top of existing prejudices.
Tiana's father is a participant in a real historical war - the First World War. And he deserves much more respect than all the films about gays and lesbians. I wish they had shown his battle and what happened. Lion king, Bambi...Even Tarzan showed the demise of the parent and it bonded us closer with them and the main character. I think that kids could have handled a heartfelt moving score and scene highlighting the father maybe holding a photo of the family close to himself before charging off to battle or something.
Not only did he serve, but he also looks like he may have been an E-5 field Sergeant. He wasn't just a private or someone who just enlisted; he worked his way to that position. (Privates are usually E1-3.)
this was a very good video! maybe do big daddy (charlottes dad) or naveens parents? he was a rich man but was kind etc to tiana where's his wife etc naveens parents spoiled him and realized the error in their ways.
I always assumed that he died as a soldier, but I never considered the possibility of him coming home and dying from a disease. Most history buffs know that after World War I we had the influenza pandemic. It killed millions of people, and Tianas‘s dad could have been one.
When I saw that picture in Tiana’s room I knew right there and then that he was a soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect his country. He was awarded posthumously and he earned it with honor.
When I first watched the movie I already figured out that he died in war just by looking at the photo she kissed of him. Though I didn't really know if they gave medals like that to black men in that time period.
This is amazing!!! I never noticed her father went to war and I never really paid that photo any mind so I definitely didn't notice the medal! I honestly just assumed that he died of an heart attack or something like that.
I agree he died overseas and it was given after his death. I think his only regret isn't the restaurant its he never saw Tiana fall in love. I think he wanted her to fall in love more then he wanted the restaurant. He had all he needed in life. His family. I think that's all he really wanted was Tiana to find the same thing. The restaurant was second. I think when he died and went to heaven that's the only thing he regretted was he never saw his true dream come true was his little girl getting what he had all his life and what she really needed in her life.
they should do a part 2 where you know it jumps to like 30 years later she becomes old like mamma odie and these two orphins become frogs and they seek help to Tiana (who is old now) Just how tiana and Naveen had done in the first movie.
Not only is Tiana the first African American princess. She's also the first to have her father die. All the other princesses had mothers die. My bad forgot to mention Cinderella. She's the first to loose both her parents.
Totally trying not to cry while watching this video. A good man who had a hard life, he lives on in his daughter and wife and any descendants he would have
I like how he's excited telling his story. He seems like the best most heroic Disney Male figure period! Most Disney males start out bad and turn good after examples beauty and the beast tangled Pocahontas and so on
I want to add something- this was in the era of Jim Crow laws. And for her father to have the Distinguished Service cross in this era, suggests that what he did could not be overlooked by racial prejudice, showing that what he did was truly special! This makes me have so much more respect for James than I already had. I believe that James is one of the best Disney dads of all time
He always reminds me of my grandfather, he had been in the army and almost participated in WW2 But was able to get out because of my aunts birth. But he is a very nice, polite, and compassionate man. Maybe a little too kind sometimes, but I have always looked up to him.
I don’t think anyone could have gotten as close as you did to James’s death theory. Excellent and well done with you observations, it truly looking spot on. And continue doing what you love most. :)
my grandfather had the third highest honor given which is silver star for bravery, from the Korean war. He stayed behind enemy lines so the rest of his troop could retreat. So i could only image what the cross would take.

(Privates are usually E1-3.)
this was a very good video!
maybe do big daddy (charlottes dad) or naveens parents?
he was a rich man but was kind etc to tiana
where's his wife etc
naveens parents spoiled him and realized the error in their ways.
Roxanne Draper, I believe it stated that she died in childbirth.
I always assumed that he died as a soldier, but I never considered the possibility of him coming home and dying from a disease. Most history buffs know that after World War I we had the influenza pandemic. It killed millions of people, and Tianas‘s dad could have been one.
Every time they transition from her as a toddler to her as an adult, I cry every time
Aleluja!! Im waiting for this for sooo long
So glad I could finally bring this to you then!
I’m over here thinking about another topic for you to do, since you did em all 😂😂
I freakin love this movie so much! 😍 Tiana is one of my fave Disney princesses
This is amazing!!! I never noticed her father went to war and I never really paid that photo any mind so I definitely didn't notice the medal! I honestly just assumed that he died of an heart attack or something like that.
Jassiepoohbear rewatch the movie
@@tamesechristian6020I mean I've seen the movie several times and enjoyed it each time, I just didn't notice those small details about her father
fun fact the card that facilier pulls (Three of pentacles, upright) means Teamwork, collaboration, learning, implementation
You honestly make the best backstory videos!😍👏👍
He passed away in WW1, I wish he was still alive when Tiana was older, but he technically already was alive... inside his daughter.
they should do a part 2 where you know it jumps to like 30 years later she becomes old like mamma odie and these two orphins become frogs and they seek help to Tiana (who is old now) Just how tiana and Naveen had done in the first movie.
Not only is Tiana the first African American princess. She's also the first to have her father die.
All the other princesses had mothers die.
My bad forgot to mention Cinderella. She's the first to loose both her parents.
@Blessing Studios I forgot about her. She lost both her parents. I just realized.
new orlEEEENs im srry im from nola and....we say ut like “new orlins”
Lol true I'm from br but now I live in Nc and everybody be like new orleeeeeeans
My Mom’s from Nola and we say new orlins👏🏽
I'm from BR and we say "orlins" here but there was this one guy at school who said "orleens" and it PISSED ME OFF!!!!
I really really really really really really really want to know what happened after Tiana had her happily ever after
This was the best father figure Disney ever created! Besides Mufasa.
I am CRYING. :'( I love these characters so much...Tiana is probably my favourite princess 💚
Totally trying not to cry while watching this video. A good man who had a hard life, he lives on in his daughter and wife and any descendants he would have
Omg you have so many subs! It’s Mason from your Junior Achievement class
James was one of the best Disney dads
and a Soilder
I agree he probably died heroically in the war.
I like how he's excited telling his story. He seems like the best most heroic Disney Male figure period! Most Disney males start out bad and turn good after examples beauty and the beast tangled Pocahontas and so on
my favorite princess. Not only was she the first princess that looked like me , she was so hardworking and inspiring .
I have a question how does rapunzel understand Pascal in tangled
Peter Wall I never thought of that I hope he sees it so he makes a video
I want to add something- this was in the era of Jim Crow laws. And for her father to have the Distinguished Service cross in this era, suggests that what he did could not be overlooked by racial prejudice, showing that what he did was truly special!
This makes me have so much more respect for James than I already had. I believe that James is one of the best Disney dads of all time
Can you do one on Bambi's parents that would be a good idea btw I sub you bro
He always reminds me of my grandfather, he had been in the army and almost participated in WW2 But was able to get out because of my aunts birth. But he is a very nice, polite, and compassionate man. Maybe a little too kind sometimes, but I have always looked up to him.
Hm, my grandma said that he just worked himself to death but I don't think she noticed any of the war details that you just gave.
Probably your best video yet. Your research and passion is always a delight to watch, but the story of Tiana’s father transcends much!
Who else *REALLY* wanted to eat Tiana’s gumbo?
You deserve a million subscribers Isaac! I love your theories and your discovering Disney videos!
She my fav💞
Tiana is awesome!
The Princess and the Frog was one of the first Disney movies I watched and I love it!
They got a telegram that said he died in combat they probably would have mentioned something about him coming back home
I don’t think anyone could have gotten as close as you did to James’s death theory. Excellent and well done with you observations, it truly looking spot on. And continue doing what you love most. :)
R.I.P - Tiana's Father
Perfect timing. I just rewatched this last night!
I always thought he died in a war or something to do with him being the Military
my grandfather had the third highest honor given which is silver star for bravery, from the Korean war. He stayed behind enemy lines so the rest of his troop could retreat. So i could only image what the cross would take.
My favorite princess 👑 but I definitely agree with you.
I like how he says "please consider subscribing" instead of "go down right now and subscribe"
This is a question I needed answers to
Wonderful video! Princess and the frog is one of my favorites! It puts more emphasis on the importance of love over worldly gain. Tiana is a wonderful role model, as is James!❤️
ive always wondered what happened thx
You certainly have a knack for making me appreciate characters who were either never in the story or no longer a part of it. Tiana's father reminds me a lot of my grandfather who was in the army and a great man, til cancer took him
