    Wow this brings back memories from trip there in 2017. Was there for 6 nights. We purchased an iAmsterdam card which included transit and tons of discounts at museums and attractions ( highly recommended ). Public transport in Amsterdam so easy to use and straightforward. I'm a public transport user at home so adapting was no problem at all. Used train from airport and buses and trams within the city. We were especially fond of the trams. Cheers from Vancouver 🇨🇦

      Grappig, mijn ervaring is dat het in Rotterdam en Den Haag juist veel makkelijker is dan in Amsterdam, omdat je in Amsterdam altijd bij een conducteur of bestuurder in moet stappen (de enkeling, die de hekjes naar achteren trekt, daargelaten). In Rotterdam en Den Haag kun je echter overal instappen en is het een koud kunstje. Over het gemak van zwartrijden in Randstadrail ga ik het niet eens hebben... dat is geen kunst.

    Very good video, and very helpful, with all the ways to travel in Amsterdam. Thank you! But I just have some questions for you: I'm planning to use the Amsterdam and Region travel ticket, as I'll be in Amsterdam for just 3 days. Can I use the IC Direct to travel between Schiphol an Amsterdam with the ticket? Do I need to check in and out, or just in? And also, on the train, when there are no gates, do we also need to check out? Thanks.

    • @RailPublicTransport
      @RailPublicTransport  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as i could read the website, yes you can use Intercity Direct between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal(it's also a regular train, except between Rotterdam Centraal and Schiphol Airport, you need a supplement for that part). Yes you always need to check in and out at the scanners inside the tram and bus, train and metro have gates where you check in and out, and train metro can have scanners on the platform to check in or out when you have a cross platform change between 2 operators, and sometimes there are no gates located at the exit of stations, then you just use the scanners at the locations(mostly gates in Amsterdam) and always somebody around to answer you questions. But remember you always need to check in when you start your journey and check out when you leave, and check in and out when you switch from operator(such as, Amstelstation and Duivendrecht)!

      And that's why we got that system, as it's thought of by the transport companies. It benefits them and it serves the user only very little convenience. We are also one of the few countries in the world where tapping in and out is done on moving vehicles as well. Almost every other country has a flat fare on trams and buses. Ofcourse, we also wanted to annoy customers and shake every penny we can from them, so you need to tap in and out...
      I'm sorry if this sounds very cynical, but this is how I think of this system...

    • @dutchpublictransport6304
      @dutchpublictransport6304 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really? Read up on the matter and find how 'the customer' eventually ended up at the end of the list of all the things this 'system' should be able to do. Then read about other systems on this planet: only very few of similar systems feature tapping in AND out on vehicles, where tapping in and out on platforms is rather common. Really, there is no other company in the world where the customer is served in such a bad manner, pays a criminal amount of money for the card alone (which is around 5 times the total cost of everything involved in fabricating it) and has to go through quite the hassle if you want your money back when something has gone wrong outside of your control.

    • @dutchpublictransport6304
      @dutchpublictransport6304 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Het werkt een stuk beter dan al die strippenkaarten en zones uitrekenen. Geen gezeur meer met kaartjes kopen. Dit systeem werkt ontzettend goed en is ontzettend makkelijk te gebruiken. En vergeten uit te checken is tegenwoordig bijna onmogelijk door poortjes en het extreme aantal waarschuwingen. Ik zie geen nadelen van dit systeem.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      'Geen gezeur meer met kaartjes kopen?' Hoe vaak zit jij in een Amsterdamse tram? Ga eens kijken op CS en de Dam om te zien wat voor massa's daar de tram bestormen en allemaal een kaartje moeten kopen. Ga dan ook nog eens kijken hoevelen er met treinkaartjes een tram in willen, er mensen met GVB-kaartjes Connexxion of EBS-bussen in willen... Er is echt níet over nagedacht.
      Een systeem dat nog steeds foute prijzen berekent (en nee, dat is geen uitzondering) omdat er ergens iets mis gaat, noem ik geen 'ontzettend goed werkend' systeem. Ik ben niet voor niets weer gestopt met reizen per OV bus zodra ik dat weer kon.
      Vergeten uit te checken gebeurt anders (zeker onder toeristen) nog regelmatig in Amsterdam: het is ook niet uit te leggen dat een kaartje dat een uur geldig is onmiddelijk ongeldig verklaard wordt zodra je een keer vergeet uit te checken.
      Ik zie helaas nog altijd heel veel nadelen aan het systeem, helaas, maar dat is niet anders.

      Yes you can check in and out with a disposable ticket or the QR-code from your phone from the NS-app.
      If you miss your train, metro, tram, bus or ferry etc. You can just take the other one as long as you travel between the 2 destinations, in the right direction, such as a dat ticket, one way, return etc.
      If you buy with the app or at vending machines the ticket is included for all operators you changes trains from between the 2 stations.
      You can just buy your tickets in the app
      You can open gates with the QR-scanners at the gates, conductors will scan your tickets with their QR-scanners

    • @RichardRenes
      @RichardRenes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, here are some answers: train tickets generally last till 4 am the next day. There are no weekly unlimited tickets, only daily ones (and at 55 euro, those aren't cheap). For public travel in cities, it generally is possible to buy multi day tickets (1, 3 or 5 days at least) that will be valid in all the modes of public transport a city has (bus, tram, metro and/ or light rail).
      Single train fare from Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam central is 5 euro 60. Compare that to the 60 euro a taxi will generally charge you for that same trip.

    Whoever did your titling needs to go back to school. CAUSE and BECAUSE do not mean the same at all. That would be like using DRIJVEN instead of BEDRIJVEN in Dutch.

    • @gabrielbrouwer
      @gabrielbrouwer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never heard anyone say drijven meaning bedrijven, but I heard a lot of people say cause instead of because.

    • @djh1947
      @djh1947 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gabrielbrouwer Then you are listening to the wrong people. English speakers don't do that unless it's in a song or poetry for effect and even then it would most likely be written as "cos" or " 'cos" and it would certainly never be used as you have used it in a crawling title on a video that would expect to be taken seriously.
      Put "cause meaning" into Google search and see if you can find references to "cause" being a substitute for "because". I have just done that and I can tell you that you won't find any.
      And finally, if you ever want to write an English word without its prefix then you should replace the missing letters with an apostrophe, so you would write abbreviated "because" as " 'cause ", to distinguish it from the real word "cause", but trust me, you don't do that in a serious title on a video, since it would imply that you are trying to be flippant and not be taken seriously.
      In the English speaking word we don't have a bunch of tax-payer funded sages who change the language from time to time, like you have in Dutch.
      Policing the use of the English language is left to the people who speak it, which includes you. People who misuse the English language, like Donald Trump in his Tweets, are mercilessly called out through public ridicule.
      I'd like you to think about South Africa for a moment. The English written and spoken by native English speakers in South Africa is identical to that spoken in the rest of the English speaking world. The same cannot be said for the Dutch used there. Yet both groups have been in South Africa for about the same period of time.
      Why is there this difference? Primarily because in The Netherlands you hand over the responsibility for controlling the language to a small group of people who feel a responsibility to make totally unnecessary changes to your language viz. CADEAU = KADO. This makes the language spoken and written in The Netherlands substantially different to that used in South Africa. Whereas English speakers can read and understand plays and poetry written by William Shakespeare more than 400 years ago. Why the difference? Because we don't let people mess with our language.
      The English language belongs to the people who speak it and it is those people, not some out-of-touch bunch of academics, that police it and manage it.
      So it doesn't matter if you are Gabriel Brouwer or Donald Trump, if you step out of line, somebody is probably going to tell you.
      Remember that the reason you are titling this video in English and not Dutch is not for me, I can understand both, but to give the title the widest audience and that includes many people who are not native English speakers and could easily be confused by your incorrect use of the English language. So for their sake, if not for mine, you should be striving to title your videos with the most correct English possible.
      Groetjes uit Frankrijk!
