The lm358p cannot be replaced by the ne555 The replacements are lm393, or tl072, or ne5532p or ic 4558d I advise you to use the ic 4558d, as it is widely used in cassette players or radios, and if you want to set the right-to-left system, use the lm324n

This is not seems to be a active tone controls system . In an active tone controls there should be negative feed back circuit. That system tone control gives excellent low and high frequency response. Which was introduce by mullard company in their Amplifiers.

Minimizing op-amp loading could be the reason, though I doubt he really did the calculatios himself. I saw a circuit similar to this on TDA2320 datasheet. You might want to check it out.
This is not very useful if one wants to build the project. Including a conventional schematic drawing would be far more informative than watching soldering connection.
