This is a good reminder to people who seem to think that there was some kind of golden age in Britain and everything was amazing in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The quote James Callaghan in 1976, Britain had living throughout that while period on "Borrowed money and borrowed time."

Varley was a strikingly calm cabinet minister, and replaced the stormy Wedgwood Benn at Industry in order to appease the CBI.
