I met Stanley J when he lived in Madison, my wife opened for him once in NY. It’s nice to see another sophisticated improvising musician with the ability to improvise fluidly through any harmonic changes using tapping technique not as a circus act, but just as a way to play music on a guitar and take advantage of and further explore and expand the instruments possibilities. This takes me back to hearing him the first time at a college house party in the early 80’s, about 82 I think, his CD Touch Sensitive had this type of feel and tone, great ideas and feel! You are getting a warm sound with this instrument and set up, to be honest , I play using traditional technique on acoustic guitar, tapping produces a sound that’s typically not my favorite, but your playing transcends that barrier, at least for me. Any way , 82, back toSJ, At that time it was as if an alien being had transported in the room, we couldn’t believe what we were witnessing. You’ve really picked up that baton and are killing it. Wishing you much success with your music, you are another one of those special talents and your hard work is appreciated and very evident, congratulations!! Well done! ❤️👍
Love the crunchy chords from about 1:26 - 2:15. And that little section at 5:50 reminds me more of herbie hancock than a guitar player (a good thing ofc)
It's tedious to write all of these little ideas down sometimes, and in doing so sometimes you lose sight of what you were trying to do originally, and it becomes an exercise rather than honest music making.... Can be easier to just stream the piece from your brain....
@TorySlusher I wonder how something like Jam Stick would work for you My guess it is in it's infancy, and has yet to decipher piano, or piano like information. They say you can't unscramble an egg, but they may, with quantum!
Thanks, I think it's one of those things where you really push yourself physically to do certain things and then you kind of just back off and try to have a lighter touch... But you almost have to do the first step otherwise something doesn't happen
I do love those unusual ever moving and swirling harmonic patterns. Love to see you live with a full band? I’ll take a look on TH-cam for some performances. 🙏😊❤️
If I can ever find some really interesting players that want to do a trio.... I mean you know like really interesting unique players that are pretty good and have a deep theoretical knowledge... Bass and drums... It might also be interesting to do the Gary husband thing, trade some solos with the drummer etc
I'm having to re sort of relearn humbuckers in some ways as far as tone production... I think I have it now, it took a little bit though, the feel is just different from singles to humbuckers... All of the adjustments to the guitar also especially
Hello Tory , nice piece of music I was trying to get some of your lines for few seconds after 3:39 , there some kind of standard progression , you mix easily arpegios and chromatic notes also with symmetrical scales but you should some kind of “strategy” , any elements to share ? Brgds from old Europe
@ thank you Tory , do you play a fragment of Joe Henderson tune or is it the whole impro on it ? If yes , what tune is it ? I like his compositions but could not recognise it :-)) Brgds and keep playing so well
Yes you can, lol. I'm not trying to "do Dynamics" here.... Moreover, every single video mastered audio track etc is eventually hard limited or soft limited in order to bring the volume all the way up to standard levels etc, so I have no idea what you're talking about as far as Dynamics, the modern era is pretty much eliminated much of what you were talking about, in a professional sense of audio production. Most of the time I'm trying to get a very even type of response, not a bunch of peaks and valleys that's hard to listen to. For example, you get in the car and you listen to some famous orchestral works on the radio and they play so soft in some sections that you have to turn the thing all the way up just to hear what they're doing etc and then it's way too loud when they go to the next section etc this is poor optimization..... Not expressiveness.
I think I finally figured out how to set this guitar, it just took a while of experimenting to figure out how to really adjust it for what I'm trying to do....
@TorySlusher My uncle and I just re-strung my 1986 Ibanez Custom, and I wish I had done it sooner! Hadn't played the guitar in like 5 years. It feels like home having it back in working order! 😅
Many time I hear people playing with the righ hand over fretboard technique and there is something off about their sound, but you sound great, even better than when you play normal. Would be great to hear you with some p90s.
c'mon. heed my words. put on a strap, stand up, dance and make 'the face' when you play. otherwise, you're just gonna sound stiff and super techinical, a niche for nerds. seriously. i think you'd enjoy music more if you put your body into it. i often think you're doing this on purpose, and it doesn't serve you well. now, however, if you're neurotypical, please forgive me and carry on. i'm an ally of neurotypical people, but sometimes it's just hard to tell. your playing will take a new dimension if you dance while you play. you know very well that all your favorite players danced while they played. eddie, allan (he used to gyrate like a helicopter taking off), george benson, joe pass, and so on. body language influences your playing. i hear lots of great notes and ideas, but there is no groove. now, however, your drumming is very groovy. sorry., i also think you're cute and wish you were my girl, but that's a different thing. i'd criticize my gf too
So this is kind of funny, I started off all by year basically playing rock and blues, but then at some point started getting interested in classical music and then ended up buying a bunch of classical guitar books, so I kind of taught myself to read as well as play, I wouldn't say that I was astonishingly great at it for a good long while, but I was kind of getting the basic concepts down... Then I kind of just dropped all of that and was doing just rock and Jazz, but later of course kind of looking back at it again from a technique perspective. I kind of needed something to compliment the two-handed approach, and the pick just wasn't doing it
@@TorySlusher Is that Strandberg made in Sweden or Indonesia? I would like to get one but farming out production to the far east kind of puts me off. Same when Marshall amps did it with certain models like the DSL models. I think the quality always ends up suffering.

Not all who wander are lost. Wonderful.
HOLY FORK! INTENSE, MAGICAL, MAGNIFICENT!!!!
Jazz might not be for everyone. It is for me. What an aural journey, thanks Tory!

I enjoyed it alot. I like the rhythm in your playing ... You got those rhythm bones.
The most amazing thing i have ever seen in my life, for the abstract jazz connoisseur.
Save this video for evidence...
I like to think of this as high information music. My perception of other music is heightened by listening to such a talent

@@TorySlusher Duly noted. You put the work in and the payoff is priceless.
Another can't miss posting from the unique hands and mind of Tory; thanks for the wealth of inspiration! 🙏👍🎸🤘👊
I love the flow. And your chord voicings are amazing. Even without the tapping playing, you have a unique style.
Thanks

The improv is what I am here for, you’re delightfully fluid and adaptive within the tune.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful music. I enjoy it a lot! You are fantastic.
Do you have a license to fly? You may need one for each finger. You never disappoint, Tory.
Absolutely amazing! Shades or Stanely Jordan, Pat Metheny, Charlie Byrd, Jos Pass, etc.!
Nice playful mood phrasing sense of freedom etc. Tori! Would love to jam!!
Yes, you stood (or sat) and delivered! I like that tone....

Why am I not surprised. Thank you, Tory.
Amazing! Thanks for putting this out there! Throwing some Holdsworth in there is always awesome too lol
Wonderful feel as always. A total treat.
Sick af.
Would love to see a small play by play of a sample of this showing chord/scale relationship and fingerings.
You cook!

Inspired! Thanks Tory!
The title is very, very accurate.😎👍
Thanks, sounding good.
Yup
Absolutely brilliant…
Wonderful music, great playing, and excellent tone too ! Kudos Tory!
All of the adjustments I've been doing are starting to make it sound better..... Going from single coils to humbuckers, you know, after many years

Not really, just playing changes as I make them up.... Aside from the Joe Henderson tune in there
@ thank you Tory , do you play a fragment of Joe Henderson tune or is it the whole impro on it ? If yes , what tune is it ? I like his compositions but could not recognise it :-))

I love the work behind this art❤The only issue I have with tapping is the lack of dynamics.... You can't change the dynamics of the tone

Thank you Tory that is nice guitar playing.

Damn you're good!! Phenomenal! WTF Tory!!
was watching Molly Tuttle earlier, and now this - amazing fingerpicking!
Oh aye, tis indeed interesting, very.
9:06 the chord and the squeek
That's an actual in-tune note, G... Bent up 1/2 step from the pole piece F#
Another beauty! Cheers!
Fascinating to listen to, and to watch. Do you use normal tuning?
Yeah
Amazing!!!😊
The action on that fretboard
It's pretty decent at this point

I sure wish we could jam sometime.

Not directly, but sort of by proxy.... Ie. A lot of the people I've listened to and studied over the years have been...

Been doing that for so many years now...
Just as an aside, the new Andy Wood telecaster has 24 frets.
Interesting

Are you self taught or did you take classical guitar lessons?
