      Nope. You obviously have never tasted the honey bell which is only available in January and they are so sweet,so juicy they include bibs.

    I won't argue with anyone that says Gold Nugget is the perfect citrus fruit. I love them. Owari Satsuma, Sumo and Washington Navel are close runners up.

    • @ocneal
      @ocneal ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Gold Nugget will hold into summertime in California which is a big plus.

    • @WebSurfingIsMyPastime
      @WebSurfingIsMyPastime ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ocneal I got a plant from a nursery in February. Fruit continues to hold onto the tree till today (late april) and continues to grow larger. My guess is this will hold well into the summer and maybe even into the early fall here in the bay area (california).

  • @davecannon1523
    @davecannon1523 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The quality of citrus in the store is so variable. Any citrus off the tree is going to be mind-blowing improvement on the store variety. I guess that holds for many fruits, but I had to say it.

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'll start exclusively eating fruit directly from the tree as soon as I get the several hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding that that would require.

    Have Indian oranges. They feel light and airy because they have a whole layer of air between the skin and the insides and sometimes you can even shake them and hear the fruit rattle around inside. It looks sort of bumpy and the rind is green and orange. The skin around the little slices inside also comes off very easily.

  • @ericshen6532
    @ericshen6532 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    It almost reminds me of a Ponkan; relatively thick and airy skin, easy to separate wedges and the shape in general kinda looks like a Ponkan.

      Yes, looks and feels like one. Flavor is different though.

    I just had one. They're pretty good. The best thing about it is you can peel them really easy. No citrus on your fingers. That's a winner in my book.

      Halo Murph : That’s how clementines taste to me: very sweet, but not enough sour and fruity flavors to balance the sweetness.

    UC Riverside's agricultural department created a real winner here. It rapidly became my favorite citrus after I bought one. Not only is it easy to peel but the thickness of the rind makes it store well -- I don't have to carefully check for broken rinds to avoid spoilage like I do with mandarins (I've lost bags of mandarins on my shelf due to one starting to rot and spreading the rot to other fruit in the bag)

    Gold nugget mandarins are pretty much my favorite orange like fruit. It tastes really great and the peel just about falls off on its own. The hard to peel nature of something like a naval orange is one of my least favorite parts of it. They are pretty easy to find in Illinois during their season so it is fairly widely available.

    Hiya ^-^ little numbers on the serial number stickers are just the ID codes you use to type into the till when the code doesn't scan...the stickers are often too small or crinkled to scan properly so short number codes make life WAY easier for till bunnies like me ^-^
    P.s. I love being a "Fruit Freak"! ^-^

    Clementines are also a variety of mandarin- or, by some accounts, a mandarin/sweet orange hybrid. Tangerines are also mandarins- at least according to some books. Most of the citrus varieties and species cross with each other so readily, and have been modified so much by domestication, that it’s hard to sort out where the species divide among all the cultivars.

      @@WeirdExplorerah, I figured you were probably too young to remember the Freakatorium, the museum he had in Manhattan. It closed in 2005, but I figured you might have met him at a show. Johnny, was an acquaintance of mine. I didn't know him really well but we would talk and hang out some at the Maryland Faire, and he taught the guy, who taught the guy, who taught me to eat fire.

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very cool. I moved to NYC in 2005 shortly after the freakatorium closed, so I never got to see it unfortunately. I was taught sideshow by another great, Todd Robbins.. it was also back in 2005. Thats great, I love how so much of sideshow is passed down person to person. Sadly these days a lot of kids are "learning" from youtube and its terrifying.

    Which is better between Satsuma and Gold nugget for flavour and sweetness?

    • @ocneal
      @ocneal ปีที่แล้ว

      My opinion is that the Gokd Nugget has a more consistent sweetness on nearly every mandarin. Comparatively, the early season Satsuma some are sweeter than others - in my opinion. I’m wondering if more sunlight getting to the Gold Nugget has anything to do with it. In mid-March the Gold Nuggets are just coming to market. But they will hold on the tree at least least until June.

    clementine is a type of mandarin, but this is definatly no clementine, which has smooth skin. typical of where you bought it to say its the best, they would say it will pour you a drink, and cook you dinner , before peeling itself if they thought you would believe it.
