Oh that's so sweet Marie, you made my day! It's lot of work to create these tutorials, so it means a lot for me when someone tells me how much all of this can be useful him or her. Thank YOU ❤
HELPFUL TIPS and TIMECODES! I, too, have purchased the template to modify into a mask/cosplay piece. I've just gone through the video super carefully and hope the following can help make the tutorial and templates easier to use. TIP #1 - MAKE SURE you transfer over the template page numbers. For some reason mine didn't initially transfer (I think the bottom of the pages got cut off) so for every piece after 12 I was like "which one is this?" #2 - If you are wondering which templates correspond to which piece of the head here you go: - Main head shape/structure (1:32) - Templates pages 1-12 - Covering the dome (2:46) - no templates - Interior Pharyngeal Jaw (4:37) - Templates 14, 15, and 22 (I think - no mention of 22 is made in the video). 14 and 15 get rolled into bars to create the jaws. 22 is the spacer/support pieces to keep the jaw the right shape. - Main Jaws (6:38) - In the order they are used, templates 19, 23, 20, and 21. 23-1 and 23-2 are the only two that don't get rolled into bars. 23 are both parts of the "gums". - Details on the sides of the head (9:25) - Templates 16 - 18, as well as 13. 13 forms the ribbing pattern on the side of the head, hence why it says "make as many as needed" on the template. - Jaw tendon supports (11:11) - Templates 24-25 - Detailing/Texturing (11:29) - no specific templates. Random cardboard rolls, and strips of cardboard paper.
Hi Raphael :) i just purchased your template and i working on the alien. When i download the template i see a reference picture of a painted xenomorph. Can i ask how can i paint it the same way? It looks beautiful! Thank you for your help :)
Hey Mosko, thanks for purchasing the templates! To answer to your question, you can't actually lol the prop that you see on this picture is a 1500 dollars prop made with resin. So the painting job was made with expensive processes, devices and tools. Plus Resin is not cardboard.... Cardboard is a really bad material when it comes to painting it, because it reacts really badly to liquids (that's why I don't paint my props). That being said you can try to paint it, and if you do that in a good way by making several thin layers of paint, you may end up with a pretty good result. But don't expect to have the kind of result that you see on this picture!

What do you reccomend to use to help roll the cardboard hotdog length wise? Im having a hard time rolling into a round piece. Im also using just regular cardboard because i dont have any amazon boxes
The trick is to crush the corrugations as much as you can before starting to roll it. If you have a rolling pin, you can use it, but you can also do it by hand. The idea is to make sure to crush all the stiffness out of it, or most of it, so that you can roll it with little resistance
Yes you can, but you should spray it before applying the varnish! ;) That being said, don't do it too heavily, maybe make 3, 4 or even 5 layers but each one very lightly. Because cardboard doesn't react well to the painting. (That's why I don't paint my props...). But that way you should have at the end a pretty cool result.
@@datrandomasian1604 You'll best will be enough, you'll see ;) and if you make it don't hesitate to ask me if you have questions during the construction. I'll try to help you as much as I can
Haha good question indeed! ... Actually the trick is not to waist cardboards that you receive weekly from Amazon and other shop on-line. And you're good because for real you don't really need that much of cardboard. And if don't receive much cardboards from shop online you can ask to the store in you area! Most of the time they have plenty of cardboard boxes that they would be glad that you get rid of them ;)
Thanks @ramssb3400 ! I used not to paint them because cardboard alone is not a good material when it comes to that part unfortunately, like at all... Painting them would have made all the imperfections much more visible, and they would have ended up looking like crafts made by a young child lol to a certain extent... Now I started to paint my props because I'm now using softwares to design them and I'm also using additional materials like filler pastes which help to reduce all of these imperfections that crafting with cardboard brings. But I also started lately to use these new techniques to paint my older projects so who knows, I may paint that one too at some point!
Thanks John Griffon ! But actually I don't paint my props on purpose, because cardboard is not a good material when it comes to that part unfortunately, like at all... Painting them would make all the imperfections much more visible, and they would end up looking like crafts made by a young child lol to a certain extent... besides If I wanted to paint them to make perfect replicas, I would simply use different materials like EVA foam, resin, plastic or even wood, the result would be a way better and the work easier too. but of course it wouldn't be aligned with the topic of this channel which is making props using cardboard only! :)

Aw man that sucks but still the realism you were able to produce in this is mind boggling, I love the Alien movies so I’m really considering following this guide to make my own!
@@SpagbolGamer Glad to hear it James! I'm a big Alien fan as well :) Don't hesitate to ask me if you have questions while you make it! I'll try to help you as much as I can!
You have double-wall, single-wall and thin wall mentioned in your supplies. I know you use double wall for the framework and thin wall for the outer shell of the alien top and the roll up glue/portions. When do you use the single wall which is the in-between wall thickness? Most of the time it looks like you are crushing down the thin wall to get it even thinner.
For this build I used the thiner one to make the second layer of cardboard on the top of the head, because for this part the more the cardboard you use is thin the less you'll have visible edges to sand later... but you should have a pretty similar result by using crushed single wall corrugated cardboard, you can totally do that if you don't have really thin cardboard 😉
@@zns72 I usually use the ones I get from Amazon and other provider with my monthly deliveries, most of the time it's enough! But when I'm running out of one of these I order some from the links I provide in the description indeed.
Yes, there is. I did that to avoid getting gaps between the pieces, which would have inevitably been there otherwise because of the curve of the head. 😉
@@EpicCardboardProps thanks for the quick response! I’m working for one in time for Halloween. Your piece is as awesome of a model as I’ve ever seen, diy or store purchased 🤙🏾
you could make it even stronger by layering fiberglass cloth strips coated in resin, and applying autobody filler over it and sanding before painting and it woud probably end up looking like an official prop replica ya'know, if you wanted to go that extra mile
You're totally right Rivyn! But I can't do that type of things over here, as the challenge is to make everything from cardboard and some paper sometime.

Thank you samuel chu! I do appreciate it

That's a nice compliment! Thank you Zavon Castro!! 🙂
That's seriously impressive, the details on that is awesome, HR Giger would be proud of that creation ☺️
Thank you so much 😀 Definitely one of my favourite props I made on this channel, so I appreciate that!

You can make iron man repulsor 🙂
@@aktilakstudios5912 Thank you Jamnikowaty! Maybe, I'll think about it thank you for the request
@@EpicCardboardProps thanks for answer
@@aktilakstudios5912 You're very welcome
How do you collect enough cardboard between each project without running out? Impressive sculpture though.
Haha good question indeed! ... Actually the trick is not to waist cardboards that you receive weekly from Amazon and other shop on-line. And you're good because for real you don't really need that much of cardboard. And if don't receive much cardboards from shop online you can ask to the store in you area! Most of the time they have plenty of cardboard boxes that they would be glad that you get rid of them ;)
First off you sir are absolutely amazing. So on to my question. Why do you not paint it once its finished?
Thanks @ramssb3400 ! I used not to paint them because cardboard alone is not a good material when it comes to that part unfortunately, like at all... Painting them would have made all the imperfections much more visible, and they would have ended up looking like crafts made by a young child lol to a certain extent... Now I started to paint my props because I'm now using softwares to design them and I'm also using additional materials like filler pastes which help to reduce all of these imperfections that crafting with cardboard brings. But I also started lately to use these new techniques to paint my older projects so who knows, I may paint that one too at some point!
You have some insane talent i ve ever seen i can hardly make a cardboadr house
Thank you Anindita Ray! I But I'm sure you could do it too it's not that hard 😉
Love from india 🇮🇳 Bravo job done Raphael
Glad you like it, thanks Arpita!
Another day in quarantine paradise where I spend my time remaking these things on the internet.
Haha glad to hear it Renaissance Dreemurr!! Don't hesitate to ask me you have questions during the construction I'll try to hep you as much as I can
some black lacquer spray paint would make this look so epic
Thanks John Griffon ! But actually I don't paint my props on purpose, because cardboard is not a good material when it comes to that part unfortunately, like at all... Painting them would make all the imperfections much more visible, and they would end up looking like crafts made by a young child lol to a certain extent... besides If I wanted to paint them to make perfect replicas, I would simply use different materials like EVA foam, resin, plastic or even wood, the result would be a way better and the work easier too. but of course it wouldn't be aligned with the topic of this channel which is making props using cardboard only! :)
Is this something you could adjust to make wearable for a costume?
Yes without problems, but it would require some skills, to make it right, so it depends on how much you are used to make that type of build I guess :)
Do you bend the rollers when the wood glue is dry or straight away?
Almost straight away, like a few minutes after because if you wait hours, the glue will be so hard that you may have a hard time to bend them properly.
Buenisimo trabajo ,un abrazo desde uruguay ya la empese a hacer 👍
Can't believe you made that that's so impressive
Haha Thank you Aamir! But I'm sur you could too, don't hesitate to give it a try if you want, the result is worth it ;)
Thank you so much I'm gona try your Thor hammer
@@beastslayer3224 Awesome! Don't hesitate to ask me if you have questions during the construction, I'll try to help you as much as I can

I would like to see Mario, Super Mario. Love your work!
I take your request into account @TheYank2ees, I'll think about it 😉
Amazing! Maybe you could do the worrier alien or the queen head for your next build
That is incredible I cant imagine how brilliant it would look with a layer of paint as well
thank you very much james booker!! Actually if I don't paint them it's on purpose. Cardboard is not a good material when it comes to that part unfortunately. Painting them would make all the imperfections visible, as would be a child craft to a certain extent... If I wanted to paint them I would use different materials like EVA foam, resin, plastic or even wood :)

That's a nice compliment! Thank you Johan King
@@EpicCardboardProps For your thin cardboard do you use boxes that come from Amazon, Fedex, or do you order from the Amazon link you provided?
@@zns72 I usually use the ones I get from Amazon and other provider with my monthly deliveries, most of the time it's enough! But when I'm running out of one of these I order some from the links I provide in the description indeed.
Is there a reason you overlap the pieces across the “head” before applying wood glue?
Yes, there is. I did that to avoid getting gaps between the pieces, which would have inevitably been there otherwise because of the curve of the head. 😉
@@EpicCardboardProps thanks for the quick response! I’m working for one in time for Halloween. Your piece is as awesome of a model as I’ve ever seen, diy or store purchased 🤙🏾
you could make it even stronger by layering fiberglass cloth strips coated in resin, and applying autobody filler over it and sanding before painting and it woud probably end up looking like an official prop replica
ya'know, if you wanted to go that extra mile
You're totally right Rivyn! But I can't do that type of things over here, as the challenge is to make everything from cardboard and some paper sometime.
Amazing! You are the best
Glad you like it David Vargas Mendoza!
A very cool vibrant motion picture 🦋💙🔥🦅
You are too talented
Thank you Xxjoshxleex X! That's a nice compliment

Curiousity got the better of me as youtube actually recommended something decent, as it recommended the Millenium falcon, and lo and behold I see The alien xenomorph.
