  • In this episode you're gonna see 3 OFF ROAD SUBARU FORESTER and 2 Land Rover Defender evolved in a TECHNICAL OFF ROAD TRAIL.
    That was some pretty hardcore Subaru Forester Off road action !
    Note that they are all lifted forester !
    It was only my second time (real) offroading (it's not softroading anymore !) and I'm pretty happy with how the Foz and I handled this !

    So what do you think ... SUBARU BEATS LAND ROVERS ?!

    • @vincentwindels3752
      @vincentwindels3752 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure they do and you know it ! For example, it took at least 6 attempts for the green Land Rover to pass the ravine at 11:15 but only 2 attempts for the grey Forester....
      If you have more footage of that day, I'm keen to see it !

      I would say the Foresters really gave a good match to the Defenders. One striking difference is the tyres, the Defenders both had 100% offroad tyres, just helps out a lot. You could also see they had diff locks, which gives you such an advantage offroad. Lower gear ratios gives more control and lower speeds. But hey the Defenders are built for offroading, but oh my, try driving them on the road 😅
      Subaru sg 2005, 2.0 n/a with dual range gearbox, 2" lift front, 2,5" lift back, 225/70r15 Yokohama Geolandar is what I drive, fantastic car onroad and offroad 🤙

  • @mrb1864
    @mrb1864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, that was quite rough going in places, adding spacers on the foresters is useful as protects arches better in ditches and helps stability, good lift of 3 or 4" and bigger tyres to compliment is a must too to save damage and fight those landrovers more evenly matched .
    I think you wise go around couple of those stages as could of damaged the fozz as yours more a 50/50 road and offroad plus your daily wagon.
    Is impressive where they will go, custom suspension and better rear diff and they will scare a landrover .
    Being narrow they good in woods and overgrowing tracks .

    • @vincentwindels3752
      @vincentwindels3752 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      None of the Foresters is stock, they have all been slightly modified.....more or less !

    • @mrb1864
      @mrb1864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once getting that rough they need modding beyond basic lift blocks, 3 or 4" suspension lift with lengthened trailing arm and poly bushes and custom struts if want best droop, add 2 to 4" bigger tyre diameter and bit extra track gives 1 to 2" full clearance lift plus protects sides of wagon in those ditches as wheels too recessed on the foz .
      Diffs need addressing, either atb or locker if doing lot of ditch/rock crawling. standard viscous diff has quite low viscosity fluid and mixed with size it doesn't transer much torque .
      Was impressed how well they done for what basically an awd station wagon out the factory :-)
      Very underrated is the old SF Forester .
      Does anyone do custom low range gear set ?

    • @vincentwindels3752
      @vincentwindels3752 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a description of each vehicule at the beginning of the video. The beige Forester is closest to stock and the grey the most modified. All 3 have dual range from stock.

    • @mrb1864
      @mrb1864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I see that, assume they all stock low range gearing, lower gearset like from L series or the after,arket ones gets useful for things they doing on this trail .
      The grey sf showed benefit of lift and large tyres giving further full lift lift below suspension arms .
      Wouldn't take much work make them even better . was great viewing .

    • @vincentwindels3752
      @vincentwindels3752 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few more mods could be done to the grey Forester.
      As it already has helical diffs (Quaife ATB) front and rear, it would be nice to retrofit a traction control powered with an Arduino processor through the ABS, it would prevent wheel spin when diagonal spin occurs but I'm no good with electronics....
      It already has maximum wheel travel possible without a body lift, 24cm front/27cm rear but I don't want to body lift it because its my daily driver.
      Another option could be an R180 ARB or Eaton rear diff lock but I really like the way the helical diffs work on most surfaces.
      What you don't see on the vid is that the grey Forester did everything with relative ease and the orange Land Rover has Detroit Lockers front and rear.
      In mild offroading, I think that a well prepared Forester is the vehicule to go thanks to its versatility but when it comes to hard or extreme, no doubt that a Land Rover, a Mercedes G, a Jeep Wrangler or similar are the kings !

Dont think I'd want to take my forester on those rough trails as I prefer my car shiny with no scratches but with that said I'd like to go on a more subdued trail with hills and river crossings rather than deep ruts and rocks. its great to see Foresters used on some more serious offroad tracks. The green SF with the 235 tyres, Does it have a lift if so how much? I'd like to put 235 x 70 tyres on my SF but I don't have a lift yet. Do you or anyone else know the largest 15inch tyre that can be fitted to an SF without scrubing? TIA. Keep up the greart work

    • @vincentwindels3752
      @vincentwindels3752 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The green Forester has a 2" strut spacer lift, front SVX springs on SF struts, rear Outback BG struts with Pedders oem height springs. Largest tyre on 15" wheels is 215/75 15 with rear Forester SG or Outback BG struts to clear the lower spring perch.

    Don't get me wrong it is very impressive they got their subarus over those obstacles but in my opinion driving stuff like that in a forester cumms very close to trying to break it. And i'm pretty sure you share my opinion bc you didn't try to get through there. I love foresters and they are very capable for what they are but they just can't compete with a "real" offroader.

    • @ALNSMOVERLAND

    That Subaru doesnt have symmetrical awd like newer models I dont think

    • @vincentwindels3752
      @vincentwindels3752 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Symmetrical means that the engine is in line with the transmission, the axles are of the same length left and right and power is distributed equally on all four wheels. But of course, sometimes the power goes to the wheels without grip due to open/lsd differentials

    • @mjg3267
      @mjg3267 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vincentwindels3752 I know what symmetrical is front and rear axles are equal length, I thought i seen 4wd decal on your subi as that isn't awd where it sends more power or slows down the wheel that's slipping, but I could be wrong, I figured all subarus are awd? The video was super cool though!😃

    • @RKmndo
      @RKmndo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mjg3267 AWD doesn't necessarily mean that torque is vectored to non-slipping wheels. TCS/VDC vectors torque.
      AWD is basically just 4WD that allows differentiation between front and rear drivelines. Typically, this differentiated power transmission is done through a center viscous coupler or clutchpack. Some of these center diffs can "lock", offering similar traction as a 4WD. The front and rear differentials could still benefit offroad from aids like lockers or limited-slip devices.
      On many newer AWD/4WD vehicles, TCS/VDC is used instead of traction diffs. This often reduces the power transmitted to the wheels.

    The fact that a Land Rover was the rescue vehicle for a Subie buried in a bowl of dirt soup doesn't really hold any significance. Any other Subie not buried in the soup could have done that.
    The Land Rovers did well because they are naturally higher and can therefore have way more aggressive tyres.

    Great Video, I bush bashed a 2000 forester round Australia for years. I just had all terrain tyres and lifted springs. I am not sure if the Aussie models are different spec, but in the non-turbo we had low range and I am not sure if the diff's are different but I never had it spinning a single wheel like that, even with only two wheels on the ground, it was always like it had lsd's in all 3 diffs.
    One of my greatest pleasures was always showing up the "proper" 4wd's in the tough stuff, the short and narrow wheel base lets you stay out of the deep tyre ruts and choose any line you like.
    Keep up the good work and enjoy that Subi.
    P.s. start saving now for driveshafts as you're going to kill cv's fairly quickly, especially with a lift.

    • @madazz01
      @madazz01 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vincent Windels
      Sorry, I didn't mean it never spun the wheels at all, I spun them plenty, but those are spinning one wheel and losing drive, maybe just too hard on the throttle.
      I never spun a single wheel that hard and lost drive, but I did kill the viscous centre diff after a while.
      I had the 1981 leone 1.8 wagon, with big wheels and a lift and that was a locked driveline in low 4, I had two of the 1990 L-series wagons and they were good, but nothing like the Leone, and the forrester was kinda in between.
      ( A Leone is a station wagon of the Brumby or Brat ute.)
      Anyway keep on having fun.

    • @SLADE330
      @SLADE330 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an outback and that has open diffs. Because of the viscous hub you can still power out with one wheel in the air because it will transfer drive to the back or front.
      If you have two wheels in the air then your in trouble. In most cases you can roll back and get three back on the ground and still push through.
      A locking rear diff would be good if you can get one.

    Really cool seeing the Foresters along with the Landys. The white dccd quaife low range model seems to struggle more than I expected. A trick I learned with the torque biasing diffs (quaife, torsen etc) is all wheels need resistance to bias the torque. Rav4 boys tug the handbrake on a little to resist the spinning wheel so if you drag the brake it'll keep drive to all wheels. Tricky with a clutch also I know but something to consider.

    Your crew are a courageous for taking on such difficult trails with vehicles that predominantly have open differentials. I'm assuming the Foresters with open differentials at the front and back are to eventually get clutch-type limited slip differentials? Subaru vehicles with VDC can make it up those obstacles easier as the traction control transfers torque to the wheel with grip when one side is slipping.

    • @AWDfreak
      @AWDfreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ALNSM OVERLAND - If you encounter prolonged downhill braking (where engine braking in lower gears proves too weak to keep vehicle speed safely low), you may also want to consider upgrading the brake pads and brake fluid. Stock, lower consumer-grade brake pads have a maximum operating temperature of about 300 degrees Celsius. You may want to consider searching for brake pads that work safely to at least 400-600 degrees Celsius, perhaps even more if you also drive very fast on paved winding roads. I have taken my Subaru XV (Crosstrek) many places, and cheap consumer-grade brake pads have proven to be both insufficient and unsafe for off-road use as well as fast winding road driving. I would recommend looking at the Ferodo DS2500 brake pad compound as a baseline, as it is safe to use even when cold, has a lower friction rating ideal for slippery surfaces such as found in off-road driving, and has a reasonable maximum operating temperature of 500 degrees Celsius, sufficient for anything except for extreme brake use such as done in rally racing type of driving.

      I have an SF too. But also a 1 inch lift and Torsen LSDs front and rear with a 12kg centre. I do river crossings plus mud and snow about 6 months a year just going to get the groceries. The only thing my Landcruiser can do better is extremely deep crossings and hitting kangaroos.
      EDIT: Came standard with 1.447:1 low range.

    I am in Africa, this is the first REAL off-road test I have ever seen. This is really a safari terrain. All those other off-road reviews marketing SUVs, should do similar; otherwise, it's a raw deal of testing or demonstrating capabilities to potential clients/ customers.

    Great videos man! Can’t wait to see what’s coming next. I’ve always loved foresters and overlanding/off-roading but never thought the two could go together lol definitely inspired me to finally buy a forester of my own. They’re way more capable than I ever imagined.

      If you buy a Forester, get the 1st gen 122hp dual range (EUDM, AUDM), they are the most reliable and cheap to modify.

    • @ALNSMOVERLAND
      @ALNSMOVERLAND  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go for it ! As Vincent said, 1st gen (SF) 122hp with low range (like mine) are the best ! It happen to be way more capable than I imagine too ahaha

      ALNSM OVERLAND thanks for the recommendation. How would I know if it has low range? Would I need to find a stick shift one? The only ones around me are automatic sadly.

      Yeah, Only stick shift have low range. You can tell by the magic lever beside tge handbrake lever !

      ALNSM OVERLAND looked into it. Sadly the US models didn’t come with low range 😭 however people are saying to use an automatic in the US because apparently they are geared lower than the manual variants.

    little question about the Forester, i'm looking for my first car and i'm a fisherman, which means sometimes I need to go off-road, will a regular Forester with normal road tyres be suited for that? Not extreme offroading or anything, but it does need to be able to go through wet grasslands and mud without getting stuck ya know haha.

    • @ALNSMOVERLAND
      @ALNSMOVERLAND  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Thank you for your interest 😉
      Well, this is logic, road tyres are not good off-road 😂 but the AWD system of the subarus are awesome, theses are are mostly used and sell in the region with tough conditions especially in winter.
      Mud and snow are their specialty 😉 and their light weight helps a lot as well!
      So I think you should go for a Forester 😁 but I still recommend you to get light At tires (70% road use / 30% off-road) or snow tires
      I hope it helps 😉

      @@ALNSMOVERLAND Thank you! I live in The Netherlands btw, so you won't really find any tough conditions here haha. 90% of the time i'll be on asphalt or paved roads anyways. But it's nice to know that if you do need to drive across a dried up riverbed or a wet grassland or a muddy trail near a forest that the car won't let you down. Plus I want a car that's reliable, relatively low maintenance, and comfortable on the longer roadtrips to music festivals in Germany & Belgium for instance. I think the Subaru Forester is a car that ticks all of those boxes :)

    So question, I watch other (American) channels try to off road Subarus and they look incapable of the stuff you’re doing here. They seem to overheat the CVT all the time
    How have you addressed this issue? The Subys in your video are doing fantastic off road stuff

      The Landies had lockers. Install lockers in those Subies and those Landies might have difficulty following them.
      As far as daily living...My non-hybrid Crosstrek has averaged 45MPG+ on a tank. I doubt that any gasser 4WD SUV/pickup could come anywhere close to that, or close to the onroad comfort/handling for commuting or long trips. A rear locker for it is only $430 USD. A front LSD is under $2K USD. A 5K lb winch from Harbor Freight is more than adequate for it...and Subaru electronics are Japanese, rather than Lucas.
