oh for sure, the chase is so much better than the catch. I think in our heads we're going to be using the car way more than we actually do. Modern cars are getting very numb now and it was interesting to see a Supercar Driver video saying that their members are selling their modern Ferraris etc and going back to the older cars for more enjoyment.
@@fullyplantd Agreed, modern enthusiast cars do nothing for me. From supercars to more attainable performance cars they’ve become more sterile, uglier and generally less interesting.
Unfortunately, most people are dumb and by continuously looking for something new (thus spending more) they also miss the financial freedom. But more importantly, they do not seek spiritual meaning, purpose, wisdom through God and therefore they get bored instead of being content, appreciating (thanking God) what they got and having moments of bliss.
Man, this is so true. Very nice A5 sat on my drive. Spend my days looking at the S5 on AutoTrader (for two years now). I know if I get the S5, I will miss the economy, the running costs and the quietness of the A5, yet I'll sit there looking at the RS5. It doesn't end.
This is true. But if you enjoy your cars then the S5 would bring a different driving experience, and thats what is life is about having experiences. For me it has always been a way to motivate me and therefroe progress me. Always trying to do better so I can get that next car experience!!
You nailed it - it never ends. I was an Impreza guy in my teens, never had much money but worked my way up to things like a GT3, V12S, GT4… currently have a 600LT spider, a Lusso and a new Defender. I never dreamed I’d have any of those. Yet I spend hours working out what else and how to make a bigger garage. I’m lucky enough to be considering adding a Pista or 992GT3 RS, but trying to work out how to get them both. Total madness and if it all went tomorrow I’d be happy in a hot hatch. But it’s a bloody addiction. I don’t get bored - just want more. Life is about cars for me!
Ironically you have the combination I'd want too. I've love an FF for the Gran Touring and a 600LT spider for the hardcore blasts. But as I've said in the video, I'd probs be better off just spending that money on working less and touring more with what I've got.
I'm on that journey i'd never thought i'd be able to own what i do now. hopefully i keep reaching. not necessarily for new cars but to have those options.
I have an addiction aswell 1 car isn’t enough , I have 997 c4S , CLS63, xj supercharged jag, BMW M140i, a Saab turbo,vw Tiguan and golf gtd , and a g63 magno edition , currently I’m working on v12 Astons 😢😅… I agree that enjoying a car more is to have less cars
@@fullyplantd irony for me is I barely use anything but the defender. The other 2 I always find a reason to not use them… weather is bad, can’t park them anywhere safe, Lusso is too big etc… You can’t enjoy some of these cars to their max if you want to pop out for a blast without getting arrested so my conclusion is it’s best to have a really nice useable daily and just use it - like a V12S! For me it would be a Roma as one of the best cars I’ve driven and really usable as it’s small (like the vantage) and still special enough you’d enjoy getting into it every day (like the vantage) That’s the logical option anyway!
I don't usually comment but this video spoke to me. I am enthusiast and spend almost every free minute I have looking at, or reading about cars. What helped me work through this "obsession" is to be honest with myself (and my wife) about what this hobby is and what it means to me. Once I "accepted" the fact that cars, to me, are just things I want to enjoy (like books/cards/whatever), then I stopped feeling guilty about constantly looking at other cars and switching them out every 6 months to a year. So my advice is, just accept the feelings of boredom and that its totally fine to change your cars as much as you'd like! Who cares how many cars you've owned/driven? Just do it responsibly, don't ruin yourself financially and enjoy the hobby! As an example, I bought an almost mint MK3 Supra earlier in the year with some engine issues with the EXPLICIT intent to fix it up, enjoy it and get rid of it early next year. I was completely honest from the get go and it made the ownership experience so much more enjoyable because I never felt "forced" to keep it. Next year I want to get something with a V8 and do the exact same thing, enjoy it and move on.
Yep I agree. As I said in the video it's about doing it in a way which doesn't make you lose money. The latest and greatest cars will be an expensive hobby but older cars aren't so bad.
I used to be like this about 20 years ago, I would buy a brand new car, get bored of it within six months and then start doing the research to buy the next best thing. Then one day I got sick of the amount of money I was losing, bought a car cash for £4K and since then I have run them until they die and just bought another £4K car. At the end of the day it is just a car, it's not worth the worry and grief of owning something decent that you worry about. If you don't care about it and are content in that then you don't have this constant niggle in your brain that there is something better out there. don't daily drive is the best advice, if you have a nice car drive something average in the week and have it in the garage for nice days. Then when you do drive it, it will feel amazing, like when you first picked it up.
Exactly, have an a5 bought new 11 years ago, only drive it on special occasions and it *always* feels special. Also probably because 90% of my mileage is on my motorbike so any car feels like luxury lol.
350Z was probably the most stress-free car I ever had. 260+bhp, rear wheel drive, gorgeous looks, great sounding V6, proper old school manual..... what more could you want, lool!
I showed this to my partner who recently got a new horse. She’s experiencing very similar, always looking for new riding gear, new horses, etc etc. it never ends! I have had the same with my car too. I drive a BMW G87 and having seen all these TH-cam channels I’m always wondering, hmm what does 600 horsepower feel like? It’s a treadmill. I am going back to my roots and remembering how amazing this car is and that everything is extremely valuable when you put it into perspective. Social media has warped our perspective of everything. The other day I watched a video about a 1,500 horsepower M3… I would strongly advise on going on a digital detox and as said in this video, don’t daily your special car. Make it an occasion every time you get inside it. Thanks so much for creating such an insightful and relatable video mate. I think this applies to all hobbies, not just driving, so I can’t wait to see the video / this channel explode!
I am 3 years into my Jaguar and still love driving it, no other car I owned drives so good, it always makes me feel great but the real way you can tell if you have the car you love is when you park it and walk away, you always look back.
Absolutely agree. I had that look back vibe with my Jag XKR, my Morgan Plus 4 and now my 15 year old Defender 90 - especially when it’s covered in mud from the latest adventure.
"the best car is the car you have right now" - "how you feel right now about your car and how happy it makes you, is as happy as the next car will make you" - this is pure gold. Lots of good points. Good video. Subscribed.
I have a 2016 BMW M2 and a 2000 Lotus Exige. I could afford newer cars, and cars that are faster. But these two cars satisfy my driving needs. I don't drive much miles, but driving both of them is a special occasion, especially the Lotus! I have been to rally schools, and plan to go to the Lotus driving academy. Driving pleasure is far more important than the car you drive!
Im im my early 50's. When I was growing up, parents saying "right kids, we're all going out for a drive" was perfectly normal. People just went out for the pleasure of driving and to see things. Sadly for the vast majority of people, this is no longer the case. We have done it with our two kids growing up but most people look at you like youre a weirdo if you tell them you just "go out for a drive". Interestingly, I have a motorbike and going out for a ride just for the fun of it is the most normal thing in the world!
Hey kids let's go burn some fuel and go out for a drive to get cut up by cyclists doing 5mph, sit in stop start traffic and listen to some garbage gen z music on the radio
i bought a Golf mk8 6 months ago, before buying it i did all my research and am sure i made the correct decision, i don't drive much so its perfect for me but theres this thing constantly in the back of my mind that keeps telling me to get something more powerful. came across this video which convinced the voice to shut up. I know that even if i do get something more powerfull ill get bored and start thinking i should've got something else
I needed a video like this; just secured finance, haven't even collected the car and have been looking into a cheeky 'second car' option lol. Honestly it's important to just get out there and experience the roads. A Dacia Spring was more fun than most cars I've driven because you could floor the accelerator and weave around
It’s really refreshing to see someone be open about this. Regular non-car people would treat us as folk that try to be a “show off” and get all the cars to wow others. That’s not it. I crave to try other brands and see how they’ve engineered their fun cars, different sizes, sounds, driving experiences. I’ve had one car that’s mildly fun for the last 2.5 years and it’s totally fine, but I want something more unique. My wife absolutely doesn’t get it and I don’t blame her. But even if I get that more “unique” car, will I stop searching? Nope 😂
Yeah man, I hear that one a lot. "Those guys just want to show off". I enjoy people appreciating my car so long as it's the right people. As I said in the vid, my daily is the cheapest as I can go, I don't need to impress strangers. It's actually the opposite of showing off and I'd rather non-car people didn't even know I had another car.
Spot on. I have a 6.2l C63 AMG coupe, and I'm still on AutoTrader almost every day looking for replacements for either the C63 or my E92 335d "daily" (hardly use it). I WFH and only drive on weekends. I will often go for a drive just to get out and enjoy the car even if I have nowhere to go. Usually I get home and think how can I replace this car, there are very few other engines with such character but sure enough by Monday evening I'm back on AutoTrader looking! Side note, I recognise that road. I used to drive it every day.
Yeah, it's either a case of driving your car more or accepting you've got the bug and buying and selling cars on the private market so you can switch without it costing you too much.
Constant looking on Ebay, Market place, etc is part of being a petrol head. Always craving more power, different driving experiences, trying different brands. Part of the hobby!
Refreshing to come across a take like this. I have a 2013 RS5 convertible. It's indeed not the most capable thing. It's a tad heavy, and it doesn't have a lot of low-down torque. It's quick, but not the quickest. But I can drive it year-round thanks to the AWD (I live in Switzerland), it has enough space to be practical, it looks beautiful, and oh boy, that engine just sings. Do I still peruse other cars? Of course. Will it be my last fun car? I hope not. But honestly, it puts a smile on my face every time. Focus on finding a car that makes you feel good, rather than merely chasing ever more impressive specs for the mere sake of it.
Really interesting video, you're spot on about the overexposure of looking at different vehicles online. The trouble is as we change and families grow, requirements will always change. You're spot on that we look far before we need to. I have been commuting in my wife's micra this week and the autotrader scrolling has gone up dramatically!
Our ND MX5 which we've owned for 6 years now we've still not got bored of and tbh we cannot imagine becoming bored of, maybe because we only put approx 1000 miles a year on it, maybe because there's no other car like it. Different story for our main car, in recent years we normally spend about 15-20k on a 5-7 year old car, always buy it outright, it's already lost most of its value so we don't lose much money in depreciation, but, yes we normally get bored after about 3 years or so maybe because it's used every day, nothing wrong with any of the cars we've owned, but just fancy a change, we always sell private then go replace it again as per above. Recently bought the colour car we want, colour leather we wanted, auto gearbox, convertible, spec we wanted etc etc, so hopefully we can keep this one a little longer before wanting something different. Finding contentment in life is so important, i've driven Ferrari's, McLarens, 911's, R8, Bentley's, owned 40 plus cars since passing my test at 17, at the age of 49, i've only reach contentment in very recent years. Drive as many cars as you can afford without it damaging your personal wealth and remember, it's not always the car, but the roads you drive on that matter, like you say, choose some nice roads, stop somewhere nice for lunch and enjoy the car and journey for what it is. Nice video! Edit: Sorry for the long comment 😂
Exactly yep. I've been lusting after a Mclaren recently, but not sure why and that's what inspired this video. I drove a Mclaren 570S and it was so fast it was boring, where as your MX5 will give you a lot greater sense of speed as it's so much smaller you sit lower to the ground. But in reality there is a lot less I can do with a Mclaren which means it will have fewer opportunities to bring me pleasure.
@@fullyplantd Supercars make you feel special and you know you're driving something special, but you can only really make the most of their potential on track, your Alpine, MX5's, Ariel Atoms, maybe even Porsche Boxster or Lotus Emira, these cars really allow you to have fun on our British B roads. An ND MX5 with BBR conversion might just give you that pleasure you mention 🤔
My daily is a Mercury ‘03 Grand Marquis LS and absolutely love the car. It does it all. Roomy, comfortable and dependable. Super cheap to maintain, inexpensive personal property taxes and to insure My other car is a ‘24 911 (992.2) GTS manual with all the right options. Great car but the MGM is so easy to live with. It’s winter here in Northern Virginia and the MGM is perfect. Glad I clicked on your video, well done. Happy New Year
I recently bought a 987.2 Cayman S and I'm feeling called out here haha. I think you're right, I really wanted to get into a 996 Turbo but ended up with the Cayman instead due to budget and not being able to wait. I think being content with what you have while also making plans for the future is the smartest move
Agreed 100%. Live in the moment and don't take what you have for granted. I never really got bored of my cars, I would say the experience became better with time as I got to know it. Time comes to sell/ switch I'm always too nostalgic
I had a Genesis G70 (Kia Stinger cousin) for several years and I also developed the itch of a proper sports car. I recently traded the G70 for a Jaguar F-Type R. While I'm in love with the F-Type the trade offs are noticeable, mainly in terms of usability, gas mileage, and tech. I won't be surprised if in a couple of years I start looking for options to address those shortcomings...
An interesting analysis of the car ownership experience and I would agree with the points you are making. For my working week I am entirely content driving my small modern Transit van, its is functional and does everything. For fun I look forward to driving my Stratos Replica which I could have sold many times over the years but have resisted. It has now been in my ownership for 34 years and It still is an event when I take it out.
Enjoyed the chat and the vibes around the question. It is thought provoking, being a car enthusiast myself, to reflect on. I have had my MK7 Golf R for nearly 8 years and love it. I love its split personality 😊 Thank you for the video 📹
Great advice. I've cycled cars so much over the years that I finally became bored with doing it. I ended up going full circle and rebuying the one I regretted selling the most, a 1972 Plymouth Cuda. When the novelty was beginning to wear off the second time around, I perused the classifieds and realized there's nothing else I would rather own and drive. So even though the honeymoon phase wore off long ago, I recognize this car as the one that suits me the most when I want to go out and just be me, and instead of wasting money selling and buying again, I've opted to just keep improving the one I've got. It keeps it exciting and new.
I can’t imagine that. I’ve had my E46 for 2 years now and there’s still so many things I want to modify and tweak to make it perfect. It also pays to say that the E46 has been my dream car ever since I got into cars😄
Maybe you haven't found your "the one car". If I look out the window at my Jag, even now after 8 years, I still get this wow moment sometimes. I daily drive it and go on random drives on a nice weekend, with no goal, just to drive. Still makes me happy. Will keep it till it falls apart. I think, making fitting choices for oneself and contentment, may play a part into this.
Thank you so very much for this video. It’s the wake up we all need, us car enthusiasts can get stuck in exactly the process you talked so eloquently about. I will be making a significant effort to get out there and drive.
You made some really good points! I have had some incredible cars over the years - 3 Lotuses, ZX300T and always looking for the next car. Now I am locked into an electric car that I really fancied but it has depreciated beyond belief in one and a half years - that I am stuck with it. But it is a brilliant fun drive! I have actually also done the same with motorcycles!
Yes I have this too, I’m only 20 and had 14 cars, luckily made some money throughout the process. Now settled with a 2.2 diesel rav4 4x4 that I absolutely love, but will be looking for a second fun car coming into the summer
If you’re an Aston Martin enthusiast, the Rapide is a hidden gem. It has you covered with everything you mentioned, albeit not optimally, but that is true with any all-in-one solution. Totally agree with not daily driving your special car. The law of familiarity sets in and it is no longer special.
@@fullyplantd I have a gen one Rapide and all the criticism it gets is overhyped. I prefer the more classic look of the front grill. People are not buying this car for the track anyway. The best perspective I got on this car is that it is not for someone who is looking for a practical four-door sedan. Rather it is a more “usable”DB9
When I was young, I was often chopping and changing cars, in 2009, I was made redundant, I signed onto agencies, I wasn't getting much work, I found myself working for minimum wage, a few years later I found a full time job, the cost of fuel skyrocketed, so I bought my present vehicle which I've owned for the last 13 years, it's basic, practical, economical, it's covered a lot of mileage, I have a 60 mile daily commute, it's a car that everyone laughed at me for buying, many of those who laughed have spent thousands changing their vehicles many times over, I still have mine, I know its history, I know what it costs, there's a few pitfalls like there are in all vehicles, I couldn't afford to change at present, but I don't want to, I look at different vehicles, they're too technical, too much to go wrong, they're out of my price range, and now with the way the government are messing around with everything, my car is worthless on the market, but it's one of the most practical vehicles I've ever owned, I hope it lasts another 10 years which is at present when I can retire
That is also a problem I have, and what is more I found that no car is good enough - every one has terrible issues and is deeply unsatisfactory in some way
This is awesome, I wish I’d thought about having a nice car & a daily years ago, keeping the nice one special! As a young soldier, back in late 90s, I used to go on drives in my old 1.4 Orion & always had a great time 🤙🏻
In my case it was the case of budget and understanding my own needs - for years I’ve been buying the cars I could afford, not the ones I really wanted and actually thought about the replacement from the day one of ownership of each of those cars. Then I finally bought my dream daily driver and that urge was just gone… … just to be replaced by the urge to get something special apart of my daily car. I did quite a good research, tried numerous ones and eventually got one and this time this urge is gone, period. I absolutely love those cars and totally don’t want to change any of those two. Maybe one day I’ll get crazy rich and will extend the fleet, but no replacement is an option as long as I’ll be able to afford it. One case is that I just understood what I really need well and the cars that I have are really different from one another, yet just great at what they should do, so anytime I get in any of those I just get smile on my face and admire their qualities. The second case is that it just wouldn’t make any sense, in case of my daily* driver I’d just waste a ton of money to get a car that at the end of the day would have basically the same chassis and engine, but with the fancier badge and ECU pushing more boost, in case of my weekend* car there is just nothing on the market that would be that much fun and raw yet daily-driveable without compromises 🤷🏻♂️ * - to be honest I’m not sure if those terms make any sense here as I drive my „weekend” car anytime when it’s warm, dry and I don’t need more than two seats and too much of the luggage space and use the „daily” anytime any of the conditions above is not met 😅
Everything you said is true. Don't daily your dream car. Buy a cheap and reliable daily and keep your dream car to those special morning drives or events.
I’m exactly the same! Really interesting video and I now totally agree on ‘don’t daily your special car’. I have a Cayman GTS 4.0 currently (which I used to daily but now don’t) and I wanted to trade it in for a Spyder RS as to me it looks just about perfect. But the Cayman is also perfect!?! I will no doubt drive the Spyder a lot less and it is so much more money. Over Xmas I had a lot of reflection time and decided against the Spyder. The Cayman IS perfect and it’s also a manual 😊
I also say life’s too short to drive a crappy daily. If im gonna die in a car, I want it to be one that I love. Any moment spent in a car I don’t love feels like wasted time I’ll never get back. Because technically, it is! If you have to force yourself to remind yourself that what you’re driving it special, then so be it! Do it!
This has been my whole life, always running a bit skint because of running fast cars n big bikes at the same time, often having a couple on the go at the same time, early 20s had a 2.8 capri and an sd1 vitesse and a 1000 exup at the same time, god knows how looking back..... Sold the two cars to put towards a 2 year old lwb shogun because the wife was pregnant, had that until the assault on 4x4s started so got out of it while it was still worth something, + the 1000 exup and a 205 gti id gotten back to mint plus a big bank loan ..... All in for a 2 year old impreza sti..... Had that for 7 years sold it to a mate at a 50% loss.... Bought a vw t5 camper 13 years ago (which we've still got) for memories with the kids....., got fed up with that as my daily 7 years ago and bought a lovely triple black porsche cayenne 😱😱 was incredible but another big bank loan as i had a lucrative (but legal) side business , up until covid F it up leaving me with big payments i could have done without, got out of that last year because of how things are going with "big cars" 🙄🙄.... Another 50% loss in depreciation, if id have waited until now itd be 75% loss, had a NDE last year so thought F it, looked at aston vantage, caymans, v8 mustang.....M2 but just couldn't justify the servicing and depreciation, i dread to think what ive lost on cars in my 35 years of performance cars,, finally settled on a Focus Rs..... As its an awesome car and hopefully shouldn't suffer depreciation,, at 53 its DEFINITELY my last car......... I swear its a Illness,, i just cant afford to blow thousands in depreciation any more.
Cheers, I'm not looking to buy a 'fun' car. I've had a few of those. I have a 14 Focus, beat up, making creaks etc; purchased after a C Class I had lived in the repair garage having 2 engines, an ECU, and countless other things. I'm in a spot where the car I have is pretty poor and sat pondering do I buy something new on finance or repair the issues with this high mileage cheap car. Whether we're talking about Aston Martin's or Ford's the points are the same. I can buy a newer car on HP or PCP but then I spend more each month than I would just fixing any outstanding issues on the current vehicle. The change from the Mercedes to what I have now was a system shock but one I made (well firstly because I needed a car whilst the other had exploded) because it's no fun having something nice if you never get to drive it. I'll change my mind next week, we all do, but it seems to me best to run it into the ground fixing things when it needs doing. I think the other thing to think about in this video is, it's all well and good having a certain car but the moment it becomes unreliable and impacts your life it's also time to go. Being bored of a good car isn't a good enough reason for a change - I sold the most reliable car I ever had because it was too boring, the next car I bought for more fun cost me countless thousands in repairs despite being good on paper!
Spot on! I've had a few of the cars you talked about and agree with everything you said. I've settled on a two car garage of a Z4M Coupe and Elise 111R. Both very characterful but very different. I WFH, so I rarely drive either for mundane tasks and if I do, I take the family Fiat 500!
I'm in the same boat. I'm 22 and have a beautiful mk7 GTI in white 3 door, the "perfect" daily driver especially for the age. Now I'm very close to buying a bmw e46 330 clubsport. It is for a great price (I think) and think its a good investment (I hope).
Totally true and a vicious cycle for most / us car enthusiasts. I've finally got a small collection and each do what I need for the mood I'm in. However I never stop wanting something different too. I'd need to add a few more to hit all the categories I'd like in the collection but I'm already WAY over what I'd should have ever spent on vehicles, so adding more just isn't smart. I need to drive the ones I have more instead.
Perfectly said ❤..48yrs old driving a 5yr old toyota Aygo paid cash, best cars ive had are old with no finance ! Second car yaris cross GR love this too! Be happy with what you have❤
No special cars here but this topic resonates with me, I have an automatic 2008 Astra and keep looking at 2014-16 Volvo V70s on AutoTrader! I'm in my early 30s and have an old man's taste in cars, which I'm absolutely fine with. I had a Skoda Yeti once too!
Been driving my ZC32 Swift Sport for 10 years now and still puts a smile on my face every day. Trolls many a more exotic car in the Twisties. Terrified of having to replace it because I've been cocooned from the price of car ownership. Brought it 8k in 2015 and still worth £5k. Averages 44mpg. The best tyres are only £130 a corner. Only had one rear shock and a gear box linkage break. Service is like £300 for "the big one". All my mates cars are in the garage 24/7 cuz stupid stuff they don't needs keeps breaking (and bleeping) at them. And they have lost more than my car cost in the first year of ownership.
perfect video, currently have a Audi S3, thought it would be the great all rounder, which it is on paper. But I do find a lack of fun or engagement, and somewhat unusable power. There really is no all rounder without comprimises, I really am looking to someday have a 981 in manual
i made this mistake a few times. i now buy a car thats made for the actual thing im gonna use it for. What you say @7:00 , that is 100% true, because those cars like rs6, bmw m3, i5n, tesla plaid etc etc are not very good sports cars, and they are not very good in comfort or economic driving. To expensive over engineerd for normal use, to comfortable and heavy for serious fun and mountain roads. i would say, buy a normal car like a audi a3, and a special one , crazy color, like a lotus exige or porsche boxster / clio rs for the weekends. dont focus on the parameters but drive it and feel it.
Great sanity check video - I'm terrible for it... Simply cannot resist looking at/buying/changing cars all the time! And I know I'm being a twat whilst looking and going through the process. I counter my bad habit (/addiction) by flipping a few which means I get to drive and experience lots of different cars... I've settled down a bit with it and I'm genuinely happy with my daily (20 plate defender), which covers dog, wife, work duties... The "toy" seems to be ever evolving though.... For me the desire to change stems from wanting to experience lots of different cars rather than a desire to "upgrade" if that makes sense...
Yep I'm the same, love different ownership experiences. As you say if you don't lose too much on them or flip them it's completely possible to satisfy the cravings.
Love the video, it summed me up to a tee , and how I feel about cars , glad I am not the only one that does this . Mrs reckons there is something wrong with me lol.
I got a car I couldn’t afford. Someone hit it like 2 weeks after I got it. Everyone said not to daily it in the winter, but I got snow tires anyway. Had it about 8months, 76 months left to pay it off. Gas is premium, so not cheap, and really the only reason I don’t drive it more. Plus oil changes. I prefer being alone though so having a two seater is perfect. When it was being repaired my rental was something more my speed, a 4 door Malibu. Hated every moment of it and my mk5 Supra might as well be my coffin. All in all I’m enjoying my time on earth while my senses can still function.
Ah plenty of us similarly afflicted. The problem is I want to buy more cars and keep what I have, which just isn't practical with money, space, or time!
A car that is fun to drive and sounds good is harder to get bored of because every time you get in, you're excited unlike a lot of modern cars and electric ones. The flashiness soon fades but character still shines. I have a summer convertible e46 and e92 diesel and a company car so I'm not driving them all the time
Listen to him, he is right. I have one of the quickest accelerating cars on the road and I don't even use the power anymore. Can't wait until the lease is over tbh. I miss my old £1000 1.5dci clio. That car brought me peace. Less is more in life and that is why the Hollywood 27 club exists.
Most car companies now offer online configurators. In the past you had to visit a dealership to see a car or ask for a glossy-printed leaflet. Back then you had to extremely lucky to see such expensive cars on the road. The reason you ask for more is because they wired you to do so. Never-ending consumerism believing you are something. You end up being a dissatisfied consumer, having spend so much money for cars that cost a lot to buy/run/insure/service/maintain 'cos you thought that this "special car" made you a "special person". Give me an BMW E38/Alpina B12 or a '90s Mercedes SL500 I was dreaming of in my teens. Don't fancy modern sporty cars or supercars with big spoilers, loud engines and 1,000 BHP wrapped in silly colours.
However, I had a tuned M3 G80 and it’s the best car in the world. It was a saloon and I really wanted the touring but didn’t want to get out of a saloon into a touring. So I’ll do a few other cars in between. 😁
Personally for me, I found my dream car and while no car is perfect, this one is perfect for me. I plan to drive this car until I'm too old to drive. Maybe you just haven't found "the one". I used to be like you, constantly looking for more and for better but not anymore. I've found a practical car that's fun and fast and reliable....what more could I ask for 😂
My motto is : “So many cars, so little time…” Buy whatever you can afford if it makes you happy and fits into your life! Life’s too short to leave unfulfilled dreams on the table, if you have the means.
I personally just bought Toyotas and paying for trackdays rentals - that way I can always sit in something new every month. I don't want to daily a Ferrari but want to drive to the max and this is the most economical way of doing it.
Have a Honda s2000 for over 10 years and probably keep it till I die. You really don't need high horsepower or torque to have fun driving a sports car on the streets. Anything faster, you need to be in the track to enjoy it without putting other people's lives at risk. I drive a Toyota Camry 75% of the time. This make driving the s2000 feel more special whenever I drive it with the top down on the weekend in beautiful sunny California. I only drive spiritedly on the freeway on ramp with the nice twisty roads.
I bought a new m4. I’m scared to use it and worry about people putting super market dents in it, I’m scared of picking up stone chips on the commute. I bought an old z4 and I walk pass the m4 and get into the old battered z4 that is just as much fun but as it’s only two seats and I do the school run with my kids and a friend I have to use the m4. So I’m now looking at a bmw touring for the school run. It’s endless and totally pointless. The novelty of the m4 has gone, it’s quick and you can hit 120mph going down a motorway slip road, so you have to do 70 and the novelty wears off, what’s the point. I’m probably going to shift the m4 in the spring.
I clicked on this video. For the oppersit reason. To find out why I was so dissatisfied with alot of cars I've had in the past. Finding any excuse to get rid. But I've oddly solved that issue by buying a Van. And a £1000 shed of a focus st170 which for a change. I am not trying to get rid. (Allthough the mk2 st225 is tempting). It's failed on 8 majors and 6 minors. So it's being fixed. If it was any other car it would have sold on or scrapped. P.s. I hate my van mostly because its a renult.
Sold my 2013 audi a3 2.0tdi S-line 5dr sportback. 103,000, Immaculate condition with full service history. Maintained it myself every year, and never wanted for anything. I got a Polestar 2, and its incredible, but I genuinely with I could have afforded to keep both.
I think it must be part of the human psyche that we constantly covet something new , whether it cars, clothes , chattels or in some case partners ! Like you I own an. a110 , which I say is a keeper, though do miss open top driving - so a keeper for now . Another interesting question is why do some of us enjoy driving and what are the facets that give us that enjoyment ?
You're right, it's like it's our hunter-gatherer instinct driving us a bit crazy. Like you the Alpine is a keeper, but I frequently need to be reminded why by driving other cars. I've often wondered why we enjoy driving. I love finding twisty roads but you'd think after a while I'd get bored of turning the wheel to each side and pressing pedals, but nope, every corner feels different each time.
Wow this hit home. My play car is a GR Yaris Circuit Pack and I'm seriously looking to sell it for an M2/ Competition, Toyota BMW Supra, DC2 Integra, Aston Martin V8 Vantage so on. Part of me wonders am I looking to sell because it's off the road for winter having seen your video. Very thought provoking
Im gonna scroll autotrader anyway, but as it stands, different caliber of car for me is the GT86, Its not got a hatch boot like the celica but ehh, you win some you lose some, When it comes to N/A cars that are 2L or under the only other choice is a MX5, and there may be a variant of a TT if you go german, otherwise there is practically no choice and sure im gonna categorize to my niche, but overall i look at my car, and I realize it has it all, no bs tech that i worry about not working or the fear of not being able to bodge it to work, sure, i want more, but really the next most exciting thing i see today is a Suzuki ignis, but i can force my mom to buy one "because its sensible" so i can steal it from her at times.
When I had a Subaru I wanted a BMW, when I had a BMW I wanted a Porsche, now I have the Porsche I want a Ferrari 😂 I suspect if I get the Ferrari I will then want something eccentric, like a 60s Lancia or something. Who knows where that could lead. The journey is as important as the destination!
Great vid and I feel its something not really touched on these days especially living in this big consumerism world , its true it never ends, there is always that desire to want the next thing or just romanticizing about it, I am a through and through petrol head and have head to opportunity to own and drive some great cars, I do have an itch for the more premium/ high end performance cars side of things but need to be realistic about it which is what tends to stop me from pulling the trigger nowadays, i am currently driving a Suzuki Swift Sport from 2015 but had strong thoughts about p/x for a Lexus RC-F 😂😂 imagine going from a 1.6 high reving N/A engine to a 5.0 V8 Japanese muscle car ooooohh I can taste it but must BEHAVE (live within your means and enjoy what you have)
Lovely vantage. Have been looking at them for sale. I think nowadays with the awareness of car thefts its also that worry of getting something nice and then it gets stolen. I just saw someone today post about his 05 porsche boxster found with a mark on the bumper and wipers snapped off
Although you're right about thefts being on the rise, I actually have no concerns with the vantage because the start up procedure and fly-off handbrake are quite complicated to work out for the first time lol
I think ive just resolved this for myself. I have a super boring short commute and do very little other driving really. I had been running by my standards a high powered, NA manual that was becoming a bit of a money pit and not fit for purpose. Financially i'm not able to run or really justify a daily and weekend car setup. I have a young family and need some level of practicality occasionally but 9/10 I'm alone in the car. I've been dreaming off 997.1 Carrera 4s for years, know all about them but the reality is for my actual needs it would be useless and wasted. I've ended up getting a hybrid (doesn't really matter what it is for thr purposes of this comment) and for it's actual use its brilliant and now i enjoy the wanderlust of TH-cam content etc more and just accept it for what it is as entertainment knowing that really the B road blasts or track action it shows are nowhere near my reality.
Its a sickness ive had my entire life, im on over 150 cars now at 36 chasing the "perfect" car. I both agree and disagree on the daily driving your special car as ive found that driving a boring car every day when you are a car guy sucks. My current daily is a c63 amg pp estate and I enjoy every single drive which makes even boring journeys fun. A lot of wisdom here that I also worked out myself, don't think about what you do not have and how it will be better, enjoy what you have now.
Lol been 18 months since the Zed went. Its sucks without a car. Got the money but want to invest in something that will bring a passive income. Then again 2025 is coming 😂
Yes, totally agree!.. Spent my early years swapping my daily every 5 months because I was getting bored or looking for something better. Now I have my daily and the aston for the weekend and I itch to drive it. We can't knock Autotrader tho, nothing wrong with window shopping!😉
Interesting video. In my case could never afford expensive cars. Now at 59 and mortgage paid etc etc, have the ability to buy a better car, but have no interest. Maybe it's living in the crowded South East that kills the interest to drive anywhere. Now the car is just a means of getting from A - B as cheaply as possible. Funny enough I enjoy more servicing and playing with the spanners then driving them. All that being said I strongly admire practical cars, small outside but big inside. Subscribed 👍
This is me. I have a 2013 Passat Estate with the 2.0 TDI. Amazing economy, good at speeds below 100kph, yet I want AN Audi A8 V8 TDI, or a Land Cruiser Prado, or a Toyota Crown, or a BMW X5, just a whole host of other cars I want, yet the car I have is good for me. I have to drive 30kilometers each way for work, I have a large dog, I have a infant to cart around, the car has everything I need. I get let down by simple things like the fact the car has reflector headlights and not projectors with HID's, or that it's FWD and not AWD like an Alltrack or any Audi equivalent, or that the car isn't sitting me in the seat when I floor it, etc. But I'm stuck with this, it's perfect for my life, just not my dreams.
I find the act of searching for a new car better than the ownership experience in some instances. Finally got a keeper but it’s only been 6 months 😅
oh for sure, the chase is so much better than the catch.
I find this more and more with newer stuff especially. While the raw numbers improve the driving experience decreases.
Appreciating what you have, and seeking contentment is wisdom.
Do you mind me asking where you're from? Id love to take some photos of your car. Thanks 👍
I drive a Panda Eco 1.1 daily to work, then on days off or a long trip switch to my 6 series, it feels so fast and capable, both very different 😂
Good video. Subscribed.
Totally agree, I needed this video, has just helped me to STOP myself spending a lot of money! 😂
This is probably one of the best automotive advice I have heard in a long time. Plus the presentation was on point!
I never post comments, but this guy is on point.
Totally agree. You need time to time drive a bad car to fully enjoy yours better car. Formula to have a cheap daily and special for weekends is great.
Never comment but this is absolutely 100 percent accurate in every single word.
Same here, same car
Amen to that!
Really interesting video, you're spot on about the overexposure of looking at different vehicles online. The trouble is as we change and families grow, requirements will always change. You're spot on that we look far before we need to. I have been commuting in my wife's micra this week and the autotrader scrolling has gone up dramatically!
It’s the friendship and connections that you have built up with your car will make you happy
Just completed 5 years with my bmw 530i touring and I am very happy with it…looking forward to the next 5
Happy New Year
yup... totally nailed it. I feel I should make myself watch this video every time I get the auto-trader itch.
I recently bought a 2010 Mercedes C Class 350c V6 estate diesel and I love it. Cant believe i missed out on driving one of these for so long.
Man you’re so right , I bought a Kia Stinger GT one year ago as a Daily & I already find myself checking reviews of proper sport cars .
Yeah, I've heard good things about the Stinger too.
nah, the Stinger GT is perfect
You are absolutely right enjoy what you have and make the best of it by making memories not performance.
Yes I have this too, I’m only 20 and had 14 cars, luckily made some money throughout the process. Now settled with a 2.2 diesel rav4 4x4 that I absolutely love, but will be looking for a second fun car coming into the summer
Great advice. Applicable to any hobby really.
If you’re an Aston Martin enthusiast, the Rapide is a hidden gem. It has you covered with everything you mentioned, albeit not optimally, but that is true with any all-in-one solution. Totally agree with not daily driving your special car. The law of familiarity sets in and it is no longer special.
I would love to try a Rapide S yeah, maybe try to push in to one that has a Touchtronic III box as they seem so much better.
Then I finally bought my dream daily driver and that urge was just gone…
… just to be replaced by the urge to get something special apart of my daily car. The second case is that it just wouldn’t make any sense, in case of my daily* driver I’d just waste a ton of money to get a car that at the end of the day would have basically the same chassis and engine, but with the fancier badge and ECU pushing more boost, in case of my weekend* car there is just nothing on the market that would be that much fun and raw yet daily-driveable without compromises 🤷🏻♂️
* - to be honest I’m not sure if those terms make any sense here as I drive my „weekend” car anytime when it’s warm, dry and I don’t need more than two seats and too much of the luggage space and use the „daily” anytime any of the conditions above is not met 😅
I feel the same, it is hard to find a car that is good on everything. Then it is the boring factor, we need to have fun in the life.
Spot on! I've had a few of the cars you talked about and agree with everything you said. I've settled on a two car garage of a Z4M Coupe and Elise 111R. Both very characterful but very different. I WFH, so I rarely drive either for mundane tasks and if I do, I take the family Fiat 500!
That's an excellent combo, not too dissimilar to my Alpine and Aston combo.
You can also be rest assured your cars will hold value or even appreciate.
What a great combo
I have had the same Kia Ceed since 2012 and I'm still perfectly happy with it, no reason to change it
Perfectly said ❤..48yrs old driving a 5yr old toyota Aygo paid cash, best cars ive had are old with no finance !
The worst part for me is the winter months make the pull for something new even stronger!
yeah, far less reasons to go for a drive so we just sit at home watching reviews 😅
Yeah I noticed winter period cars seem to get cheaper
perfect video, currently have a Audi S3, thought it would be the great all rounder, which it is on paper. But I do find a lack of fun or engagement, and somewhat unusable power. There really is no all rounder without comprimises, I really am looking to someday have a 981 in manual
brilliant reflection. thanks for sharing.
i made this mistake a few times. i now buy a car thats made for the actual thing im gonna use it for.
Absolutely correct. Cars control us, not the other way around.
I have a summer convertible e46 and e92 diesel and a company car so I'm not driving them all the time
This is exactly what I needed! Right then… off to Tesco car park!
So much wisdom and (not so common) common sense here
Listen to him, he is right.
Bloody hell I wished I watched this years ago! This is me 100%
However, I had a tuned M3 G80 and it’s the best car in the world.
I've found a practical car that's fun and fast and reliable....what more could I ask for 😂
Had my 2002 E39 for 17 years.
My motto is : “So many cars, so little time…” Buy whatever you can afford if it makes you happy and fits into your life! Life’s too short to leave unfulfilled dreams on the table, if you have the means.
trying to sell a used perfomance car is a nightmare. most of the reason i stopped changing them
This was like therapy for me 😂 thank you!!
As someone else has commented, you'd probably love the E91 330i. They're excellent all round cars.
I'm glad i already do this. M2 bought at 45k miles in 2 years i'm up to 90k. love every bit of it
I think it must be part of the human psyche that we constantly covet something new , whether it cars, clothes , chattels or in some case partners !
I enjoy searching for the next car :)
Man chose to speak facts. This applies to more than just cars also.
When I had a Subaru I wanted a BMW, when I had a BMW I wanted a Porsche, now I have the Porsche I want a Ferrari 😂
I suspect if I get the Ferrari I will then want something eccentric, like a 60s Lancia or something. Who knows where that could lead.
The journey is as important as the destination!
Great vid and I feel its something not really touched on these days especially living in this big consumerism world , its true it never ends, there is always that desire to want the next thing or just romanticizing about it, I am a through and through petrol head and have head to opportunity to own and drive some great cars, I do have an itch for the more premium/ high end performance cars side of things but need to be realistic about it which is what tends to stop me from pulling the trigger nowadays, i am currently driving a Suzuki Swift Sport from 2015 but had strong thoughts about p/x for a Lexus RC-F 😂😂 imagine going from a 1.6 high reving N/A engine to a 5.0 V8 Japanese muscle car ooooohh I can taste it but must BEHAVE (live within your means and enjoy what you have)
I needed to hear this.
Marketing, Social Media, Keeping up with the Jones. I have friends who change cars like underwear.
I say to friends that they scroll Instagram or Facebook, I scroll AutoTrader 😆
Interesting video. In my case could never afford expensive cars. Now at 59 and mortgage paid etc etc, have the ability to buy a better car, but have no interest. Maybe it's living in the crowded South East that kills the interest to drive anywhere. Now the car is just a means of getting from A - B as cheaply as possible. Funny enough I enjoy more servicing and playing with the spanners then driving them. All that being said I strongly admire practical cars, small outside but big inside. Subscribed 👍
I think we all just need to buy an MX5 and we'd be happy.
@fullyplantd Ha ha , yes maybe if we lived in France or Italy , space to move .
