  • Let's build a 4x4 camper we said. We thought we were clever, we thought we knew better, but when it really come to it we weren’t prepared to compromise and that has cost us.
It's fair to say that building the dream overland 4x4 camper is more complex than it might appear. However, we're close to completion... but if our home on wheels is to be ready for winter adventures, we need to keep spending money.
If you're thinking about building a 4x4 camper, be sure to research, research some more and don't be complacent about the costs and what it really takes to build that dream overland camper.
We'd love to know if you'd do anything different, let us know in the comments 🙏

Appreciate the honest summary. Even 150k is an absolutely great price for a truck with the quality you are building. Cheerio - keep up the good work!

Huge respect to you guys, what an honest account of your project journey! Don’t compromise, you will never be as proud of your project if you do. You set a slightly arbitrary target at the outset, you’re only accountable to yourselves, not your followers, so get on and finish the project to your standard, without compromise, the money will come in! Fab job!

When you park up next to the couple that paid €750k, or more, for a German factory build and got no more, maybe less, than you have all the budget concerns will fade and the smile will be ear to ear. Well done both of you👍

Honestly £150k to complete the truck is not bad, in fact, I think it’s very good. Although you are over your original budget, it’s not because you had bad designs or changing designs and so needed to do things twice, burning money in the process. Things have just cost more than expected and so it’s not something to beat yourselves up about. When it’s finished, and you are travelling again, you will look at the finished truck and be happy that you decided to spend that bit more to get what you wanted. I hope you feel proud of your achievements

Yesss! it's the wee bits that add up fast. I was lucky that my build was only two blocks from Screwfix and Toolstation and I was there at least every other day picking up a pack of screws or a JG fitting etc - £1 here, £3 there, adds up to a hell of a lot of £'s!

The standard you are building to will all ways see budget at this level , with my boxes from China it's still expensive at fixed costs .

c140k for a truck like that it's got to be right , it's a testament to both of you in regards to the build and commitment you have shown taking on the project. I think of it this way, VW Camper 70 to 80k , mid range motorhome 80k plus , landrover conversions 50k plus , what you have achieved must be applauded all the effort will rewarded on your new adventures knowing "We built this". Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh sometime and look forward to more content . 👏👏👏 Happy Motoring

when you 1st started out saying your build budget 100k i thought it would be hard to meet. i thought 150k or less. i built a house and add in the safety plan of 1/4 of the budget times 2 for going over budget #1
you would be close to 1/4 over budget if there was no fabricating cost. as for 6k injectors that would be 6mo down the road, out of country and 300km for a shop at a cost of 15k. add in 3k if you needed a tow.
anything under 150k is a steel for a build like yours, bet a insurance company would say 250k and up to replace it.

Gutted for you that you've gone over budget. However, you've built a bespoke and quality vehicle to be proud of. Furthermore, just consider you've replaced the injectors and are sorting out the egr valve which both could have potentially caused you more problems on your travels. Chin up for final push, you'll come out stronger.

Interesting video we utterly relate to. Our “truck” is an old VW T3 Syncro which we use as an overlander and after having an engine failure in January (near Paris) we decided to get all the welding done while the engine was in rebuild, so had to strip the interior. Therefore we decided to do a full refurb and upgrade many of the systems and refit stuff properly (it’s evolved organically over the last 11 years). Everything is over budget, everything is taking too long (it’s currently empty and stood in two coats of primer and the weathers not playing ball!). We wanted to be away by mid October (no chance).
So we understand exactly what you’re saying about feeling discouraged or angry at the creeping costs and time. Plus while I’m on the van daily, Fiona is working part time, looking after dog, family issues etc to free me up. Often she feels detached, especially when another parcel arrives from Brickwerks or Amazon etc.
Chin up, it’ll be worth it when you’re watching a sunset, drinking wine and eating cheese or one of Izzy’s curries!
Anyway, it’s goodnight from me and it’s goodnight from him (you’re our age, you’ll get the reference!😂)

I am building a truck in Holland and I am spending about 30,000 pound more than you are. A few things you have, I would like to have, but on the other side, I have a few things that you don't have. I don't think that I could have build it much cheaper. 150,000 pounds is a lot of money, but you have build a wonderfull truck.

Hi guys... We keep up with your content and very much enjoy your adventures and recent build of your new camper but don't normally comment. However, on this occasion you asked for viewers thoughts, so thought I'd drop a comment about your original build estimate. I was interested to see what you thought it was originally going to be, compared to your current spend, plus some to finish. Interestingly, I create estimates as part of my living. As part of that, I estimate for unknowns (unforeseen items and cost increases etc etc etc) which typically equate to plus 40% on top of the estimate. From seeing your spend and what is outstanding to finish, I wonder if your final cost will be nearer the +40%? Regardless of that, keep up the great work and we look forward to seeing the finished camper, not to mention, your future travels.
P.S. I am not trying to be a smarty bum or trying to down do what you have achieved, in fact, the opposite and admire what you guys do! ;-)

Just caught up guys. So impressed with what you have achieved! Quality does come at a cost but worth it for sure. Feel your pain with the costs of everything at the moment, and they’re not likely to drop which unfortunately will make it unachievable for many now😡.
I didn’t see a section on the pie chart for red wine and tea bags?
    All the best both,
    John 👍

Let's not forget that labour costs have mostly not been factored in, as you're building it yourselves. So I wonder - if you were to sell the truck, what would the asking price be?
Or, to put it in a different way, how much is the truck worth (once completed), as opposed to how much you have spent on it?

Wow guys, that was so hard to watch you guus struggle with the process to date. For the past few years we have looked up to you both with admiration to the point where a few months ago we purchased a German motorhome. It didn't tick all our boxes as we couldn't afford the off road ones on offer, but it's been perfect for what we have needed to date. Meanwhile we have been eagerly following your journey and wishing we were in your shoes.
I COMPLETELY understand your feelings having been through something similar in NZ. I just wanted to let you know that even though your budget has been blown you have an INCREDIBLY enveable truck that's going to get you to some AMAZING places when you are finished. We for one are super excited to hopefully see you on the road. Cost wise you are already on par with ours and we have no 4x4 offroad capacities despite being a MAN truck.
Keep pushing through guys the end is nearly there. Lots of love

I know the pain when I had my truck built "The Pathfinder" I went through the same overruns in costs, but the finished unit is well worth the wait and you will soon forget al lthe pain once your back on the road and you will easily recover the labour content in the long run when you realise the actual vehicle's worth

Really interesting and honest video about the costs, thank you for that. Having converted an ambulance a few years ago I must admit that I thought your aspiration of £100k was a stretch but in my view that is not so much the case. We went over budget too but as long as you can pay the bills it is OK as you will have a fantastic overland truck that is exactly what you want and will be great to live and travel in. And of course the unexpected repairs to the base are pricey but then you can have more confidence in the reliability. So, in my opinion you have done a great job and will have a fantastic vehicle at less than 50% over budget - Great job!!
