I work in tech and here are my two big questions. 1. Why was this deployed during the weekend on a Friday? Deployments should never happen during the weekend unless it's critical. 2. Why was the deployment not staggered? It would've affected only a few systems and they could've paused the rollout. Redundancy could've prevented this. I give CrowdStrike a pass on redundancy. Most companies are too cheap to invest into redundancy. They rather risk it.
It was definitely foreseeable. They insist on dumping code into the kernel despite it being a reliability issue, since they want more capabilities. Such capabilities include the ability to crash the PC. That is why software engineers try to avoid putting code like crowdstrike’s garbage into the kernel.
The update was also rolled out EXTREMELY irresponsibly. You're supposed to stagger your patch rollout to make sure that if it causes issues it doesn't hit everyone at the same time. Not to defend kernel-level code (which is a terrible idea to write in the first place) but this issue could have been 1/1000th as bad if they had pushed it to a small group of devices with comparatively low importance, and not their entire Falcon user base at once
Yes, Crowdstrike needs to be held accountable and quite frankly shutdown as well as they're not to be trusted again, same goes for Windows/Microsoft as well IMO. Yes, I don't use windows.
