    Hi Dick, I have all the things you just demoed very well. For me I have found I use a loggers tape hooked to my belt loop. It comes with a little nail at the end that hooks to the end of the log. I simply walk along and make a chalk mark every 16 inches. I buy chalk very cheaply at a discount store. When you get to end of log you simply snap tape measure slightly and it winds itself up. Then when you get to the next log it is right there on your hip. Great video.

      Hey David. I’ve never used a loggers tape. I’m going to look into it. Thanks for the tip!

    I find the laser method to be incredible repeateible and extremely accurate. Once you get familiar with it and after the initial cost is taken out of the situation, it is the best way I’ve found. To me it’s so much easier if you put the laser on the cut end of the log and then keep working away down the log, each time aligning the laser spot on the cut end. Give it a try and you’ll surely agree. Thanks.

      Thank you for watching and thank you for the comments. I agree that it’s better to work from left to right. I do it both ways, but find putting the laser on the cut end is more accurate.

    With the pro-sizer try cutting from left to right. I let the laser light hit the very end of the log then my chain is exactly where it needs to be to cut. I find it a bit faster.

      I go both ways with it Andrew and I agree left to right is a little better. I was just stuck with the angle of the sun and my camera location when I made the video ha! Thanks for watching!!

    Hi Dick, Thank you for the video. I think that you have helped me make a lasting decision. Paint is no good on the wood for sale or at home. I agree fully with you. The PVC and crayon, and stick,/magnet/disc thing are no fail accurate. I thought the laser would be the way to go, but after watching your video I'm not impressed with it at all. You can tell me if I'm wrong, but where the tip is and how perpendicular you are with the log has to affect it a ton. You displayed the tip placement, but the saw/bar angle to the log is just as important since any error will be magnified from the laser to the cut spot and will get worse the longer pieces that a person is cutting. Thanks again.

    I just ordered my Accu Mark. To me it seems like the most simple overall. I really like the idea of the Prosizer but you still have to charge it. I started out using a stick and paint can. Currently have my bar marked and doing that method of turning my saw perpendicular each time to mark. I am very excited about using the Accu Mark. Thanks for the video and justifying my purchase of the Accu Mark. You have been doing this much longer than me so your wisdom and experience is great! Thanks and keep cutting!

    I started with a tape measure and chalk. Here the last 6months I have been useing the Acc-U-mark and when its not needed I put it under my hand on top of the bar when I am cutting.. So far I like it and seems a little faster than chalk, both are constant and I like consistency
    Hopefully you feel better soon.

    Hi Dick! Good video! Prosizer definitely has a learning curve but it looks like you got it figured out! I don’t have a mingo marker, nor had I thought of the “paint on your firewood” disadvantage. I agree, I wouldn’t want it on there either. Keep up the good content!

      Thanks for watching Brad. You know how dogs are… they truly are “man’s best friend”! I’m starting to feel a little better. Spring colds are hard to shake. The laser is nice, but I’ve discovered it doesn’t work too well if there’s real bright sunlight shining on the log. I think the accu-mark will be my go to.

    Hello Dick. Thanks for another great video. I hope that you feel better soon! I made something similar to the accrue mark out of a magnet, 1/4” all thread, and a lid from a rake out container. I used round magnets first, but they would slide on the bar into the chain. Both the chain and the magnet don’t like that. Then I found a strong door latch magnet from Ace hardware that works pretty good. It’s even in a red plastic cover to aide in finding it. The other disadvantage is that you can’t start the saw with it attached, falls off while pulling the cord. Keep on moving and keep the great videos coming!

    I usually mark a line on the bar 16 inches (or whatever length you are cutting) from the tip of the bar and use that. It is a lot of turning the saw parallel and then perpendicular to the log to saw but there are no accessories to remember to bring. Done it that way for years but it is harder on the back and have been thinking about getting an accu mark. Would the prosizer be easier if you went left to right? That way the bar would be right at the spot to cut and you wouldn't have to eyeball where the laser dot was.

    • @oldguyfirewood
      @oldguyfirewood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments! I use the prosizer from either end of the log. I think you’re right that it is easier going left to right. I also use to mark my bar but I just didn’t like turning the saw back and forth ever time… it does work though!

    Hello Dick, I just started watching your channel and really enjoy the content. I gotta say though that I think log markers are a gimmick. For me nothing beats using a small saw turned sideways to mark the length, then making a quick cut through the bark. Once done, I use a big saw to buck them to length. Kinda like all the different ways to pack ammo while hunting, when filling your pocket with shells works just fine. Sometimes simple is better. Keep the great videos coming. Piece of kindling with orange paint, the pvc pipe method, and a little hand saw. Make the marks on the log before you even start the saw, then get to cutting. Might not be the fastest way, but, gets the job done

    I just watched your Video about firewood length. All the ways that you show are all excellent products. Have you ever thought about attaching two or three wire ties to your handle cut them to length and there you go. The same as the laser dot but costing next to nothing. Take a look at Chris from "In The Wood Yard" and you can see what I mean.

    • @oldguyfirewood
      @oldguyfirewood  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments! I have actually used that method before. It works pretty well but unless you move your sawhead close to the log, the accuracy varies. While it’s a good method, my accu-mark remains the most accurate and easiest to use for me. The key is to use what works best for you. Again, thanks for watching… hope you’re subscribed!

    Ive been using the AccuMark for a couple years now and other than keeping it with you so you don't loose it, there's not much to go wrong. I have had it slip down onto the chain while marking a few tight pieces. One thing I don't like about it is marking then cutting and often when Im into a pile you can get cut marks on a bunch of different pieces making it look a bit undesirable. I'm trying out the Mingo mark if it ever gets here today lol

    I use a piece of pvc tube stuck to the bar with a magnet. Make cut marks, then take the tube off and buck. You can put it on either side of the bar. It's very similar to the Accu Mark, but cheaper. Not a fan of anything you have to leave attached to the handle.

    Zip ties on handle bar cut to length just below where you mounted the laser. Add some electrical tape where you pull the zip tie tight and a piece of bright colored tape to the tip of the zip tie I put 2 or 3 ties on so if one breaks you don't have to stop and add another one. I don't have to mark the wood and go back and cut it just cut to length fast and cheap.

      Good question. We never get temps that low in NC so I haven’t had to find out. Maybe someone on here will chime in. Thanks for watching!

      @@larrykluckoutdoors8227 thanks for that info. I’m sure B&F will appreciate it too. On another topic, what size are your stickers? I’m getting ready to order some. Are they 3” or 5”? Clarify… I’m getting ready to order stickers for my channel. I’ll send you one when I get them.

    It looks like the laser marker is a fail, because it is aiming off at an angle the length will vary ,plus if the cutter bar is held at even a slight angle the length will vary, technology for technology sake! In the woods the best of all is the most simple, your PVC pipe and chalk or scratch blade, simple and easily replaced.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I have to agree with you. I find myself using the accu mark or pipe and chalk most often.

    That laser is only going to be as accurate as you are holding your saw square to the log every single time

    Measuring firewood 🪵 is a thing for sure! The struggle for consistency is not imaginary and it seems like the most accurate way to measure is whichever way works best for the user. I particularly like using a tape measure and blade to scribe my lines. It takes time but its precise.. I did just mount a Prosizer on my saw. There will definitely be a learning curve. I like to use the bottom lower front quadrant of my bar tip to start my cut. I initially set the pro-sizer up to use the front of the bar.. Not going to work for me. Need to spend some more time out fine tuning it. In the mean time, I’ll use the tried and trued tape and scribe method!

      There is definitely a learning curve with the prosizer. Thanks for watching Shane.
