    Thanks for sharing the CAD files! I mean, I know it's just a box, but it's the spirit of sharing that counts. Cheatle's _art_ is really something, too. Wow.

    Wow, so first off thanks very much for the shout out Eric. What you've made there is pretty slick and it looks great. I approached this problem from a slightly different starting point in that I didn't have a) 3d printer b) Money (artist) 3) Patience. So I used MDF for the walls and adhesive magnetic tape (22mm wide) for the bottom of the walls and the wall edges. The walls were L' shaped when seen from above so they could be used in a modular fashion and the length and width of the boxes could be adjusted. I stuck a large adhesive magnetic sheet (steel impregnated) to a flat melamine board and the walls stick to that and are adjusted accordingly. I post this in case there's anyone watching who's fed up with hot glue etc and is looking for a cheap as chips option.
    Cheers again Eric. Jim

    Awesome pro product design as always, congrats! I like to use lego blocks to make each mold box custom to the part so I use the minimum amount of silicone. Blocks make the walls around the part, then get set aside while I stick the part to a metal plate with clay or beeswax. Clay worm goes all around the base of the lego wall then it gets stuck to the plate where it surrounds the part. Spray release or paint on your mix, and pour the mold. Legos snap apart and can be re-assembled into the exact shape and size again due to the standard size of blocks. Not as fast to use as yours, but legos let you make non-rectangular shapes which can save on silicone. They lock together tight enough that silicone doesn't leak between blocks.

    That's why you can use big blocks like Lego! Works well! :) and no need to build anything

    Hi!! This looks amazing but would probably need some sticky wax or hot glue in the seams? How did it perform?

  • @Knochi77
    @Knochi77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I did some magnetic designs as well and one technique I use is actually embedding the magnets mid-print.
    I use the „pause at layer“ command in CURA to pause the print when the compartment for the Magnet is just about to be closed. Put in the magnets and continue print.
    Beware of magnetic parts at the print head, I changed one magnetic screw of mine to a non-magnetic steel one.

    • @EricStrebel

      Interesting, pretty hard core, I like it

    • @p.dykmans9846

      I tried something similar. Embedding magnets in strips of molding silicone. The idea was to build walls on a sheet of iron which was also covered by silicone. It worked 'sort of'. But it was hard to put the walls straight. And the magnet poles of adjecent walls would only allow for certain discrete positions. It defeated my initial goal to make a mold of arbitrary dimensions.

      @@EricStrebel If any issues, then a softer durometer filament like TPU could be tried, at least for the interfaces. You could pause and swap filament at whatever layer height and have a hybrid TPU PLA part... or if you have a dual extruder printer, that would be even better since not all of your interfaces are aligned on the Z plane.

    • @EricStrebel
      @EricStrebel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This should easily hold silicone and not leak

    • @davidalan6701
      @davidalan6701 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EricStrebel Sorry, I meant how would you go about making sure you could fill with epoxy resin without it either leaking or becoming one with the mold?

    • @EricStrebel
      @EricStrebel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, You would need to apply a release agent to the walls and the floor such as wax or a spray release, I think you could use wax in the corners as well to keep the resin from flowing out if needed.
