  • Roller coasters are designed to be scary. If you’re remotely afraid of them, you are part of the majority. There’s no one size fits all solution to beat your fear of roller coasters. Each fear may stem from a different aspect of rides. However, we've produced two approaches to overcoming your fear by first exploring why you might have that fear, and secondly, methods to gradually beat it!

mine was a combination of losing control and the fear always being there because i had a mother who would do NONE of these things, she wouldn't even go down a slide with me at a playground out of fear.
what helped me was going with friends who enjoy it and are used to it. and wanting to try new things.
my first upside down coaster was "Python" in Efteling, really smooth ride and I am way less afraid now.
I still need to build up my confidence every time i visit a park and might not dare every ride. but i learned to actually enjoy them.
regarding the control, it's only really fun if you accept the loss of control. My biggest challenge for that were dark rides, I used to avoid them at first.
but i went to Disney in Paris and you can't do anything when you avoid dark rides lol. so with the help of same friends i went. Hyperspace Mountain is one really nice example. I went into it with the mindset of "okay, whatever happens it won't hurt me. and it won't hurt me not to know what happens and i will accept it." so i wasn't tense and it was actually SO much fun! 😄😄 ngl, helped me with letting go of control in real life.
ETA: my friend said "if it's bad it's over in like 2 min. that makes 2 bad minutes of your life. as adults we should be able to deal with that." that convinced me for my 1st big rollercoaster. 😄

One of the things that helped me the most was pretending that I was in control of the ride, particularly the first drop. If I lean forward and act like I'm pushing the train down the drop, it feels a lot more in control than if I was pushing back against the seat trying to resist the inevitable. It didn't take long to start enjoying the sensations, and once that happened, I got hooked, and now ride everything I possibly can.

It's funny, because I also ride motorcycles at 150kmh+ and that doesn't scare me at all. Now, I just push forward, I pretend to be pushing the ride and guiding it all along and they now feel great!

Things that helped me overcome my fear:
    1. ride your first coaster with a good friend/family member who has already done the coaster.
    2. don't look at pov's too much because when you visit the coaster in real life, it looks a lot taller than on the pov.
    3. if you are scared of coasters because of the stomach drop: the more coasters you ride, the stomach drop will decrease.
    4. Don't stay at one park if you are scared, try to go to a park with rollercoasters that look less scary.

There’s 2 barriers. The mental and physical. If you can get past these two barriers, you can ride any roller coaster you want. However sometimes one barrier is bigger than the other. For me it was the mental barrier. At some point I wanted to be able to ride any roller coaster I wanted, so I analyzed the track (height comparisons, periods of time, g’s and even recreating the feeling in my head) I decided to try and see it as a bird diving. Once I finally had the courage, I took my chances and just rode it. Now I can ride any roller coaster. This one was behemoth btw.

You put it perfectly in this video: it's the physical sensations I don't like and create intense panic. Now I have the right verbiage to explain it. I have some friends who are like that. And there is nothing wrong with that at all.
When I was young, my dad would take me on these roller coaster simulator rides at the car show, and it always gave me a stomach ache, causing me to fear rides for most of my childhood. The fear of falling out on inverted rides was also an obstacle, and I wouldn't go on my first ride in 10 years until I was 15 or 16.
Now I love the sensation of speed, and I don't mind when certain rides make me dizzy. But I understand that for some people, these rides induce nausea similar to when I was a kid, and that is not the purpose of the ride at all.

I've been scared of coasters for as long as I can remember for two main reasons:
1: The intensity of the ride and specifically the stomach-dropping feeling you get going down a drop
2: Fear of heights that I've also had as long as I can remember
Earlier this year I went to Alton Towers for the first time and decided I'd push myself to at least go on the family coasters, which I managed much to my surprise! Wicker Man ended up being my favourite ride of the trip despite me being terrified to go on it initially, and I was the only member of my family not screaming at the vertical drop on Th13teen. I've yet to go on anything larger or with inversions though, and honestly don't know if I ever will. But I like going fast and that's good enough for me

  • @4fterthought

I think the fear of having no control more stems from the fact that once you're in, they won't stop the ride for you even if you start panicking.
I understand why it would be a hassle to do so, but the thought of having a panic attack while being stuck in a ride while everyone around you just thinks you're just overreacting is just highly distressing for me, and probably others as well.
Especially since so many rides go out of their way to purposefully build tension or cause fear.
I've been able to ride some roller coasters, but just the thought of going on the main few top thrill rides at my local park makes me nervous.

      @Crazysheep323 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I've had a similar issue, however, on larger attractions, the sensations (and I mean mostly mental, rather than physical actually) are so much to take, that you don't have the time/capacity to panic. You may have a panic attack in the queue, boarding, or during the lift/pre-launch process, but once the ride starts, it just goes away. I say that from experience. I literally had a phobia of loops; not even inversions themselves, but loops, and all the rides I could board that had an inversion, had a loop as well. I really didn't feel well on the first try, even though I've done rides which would be considered more extreme, but that anxiety was all gone when the ride started.

Flooding works fairly well, but the nerves do tend to come back with every new type. Even now loving roller coasters, an entirely new style I haven't rode before gets the nerves going... though that's part of the fun now. I recently rode my first dive coaster and vertical drop RMC, really familiarizing myself with the sensation of a vertical drop. Now I just need to get myself on a giga.

I only ever had 1 bad experience on a roller coaster and it was the runaway mine train at alton towers. The reason it was a bad experience was because my dad told me it was just a normal train ride so I wasn't expecting anything. (I know it isn't a fast, steep or intense ride but to 5 year old me it was terrifying). Many years later, 13 year old me finally decided to try it again and I loved it! I ended up working my way up the coasters all the way to nemesis which helped me fully over come my fear. If anyone has a fear of roller coasters, just get on, know what to expect and you will be fine

*I JUST THOUGHT OF THIS:* Imagine you run as hard and as fast as you can for a good distance. Then you stop. Now right when you stop you feel _different._ Tired, out of breath, sweaty, hot, ect. So you chill for a few minutes...then you're fine. Like you were before you started running. Coasters can be like this as far as feeling different for a while but fine shortly after. You may say "I'll never do that again" but even if you did, you'd be fine.

(Which is super hard to do when your scared out of your mind) Your body will fall lin tandem with your innards and the feeling will be almost entirely gone.

If you're talking about motion sickness, I'm there with you unfortunately. There's a scopolamine patch your doctor can prescribe to you that has been a life-saver for me in reducing my motion sickness. I went from getting sick on kiddie coasters to being able to do almost all the rides at Six Flags Magic Mountain (I did still get sick once, but only because I rode the same ride 3 times in 30 minutes...).
I also recommend eating early before you come to the park. I've found that it takes me about 2 and a half hours to digest my breakfast enough that I can safely do the coasters. And of course it's sad to avoid all the sugary greasy options of the park, but definitely make sure to eat healthy and save the sweets for as you leave.
The last tip that helped me was making sure that I kept my glasses on. I used to take them off so I wouldn't lose them on the ride, but if your vision is blurred that will also contribute. So keeping your eyes open and wearing contacts or glasses (if needed) is important.
      I hope this helps!!!

We went to Cedar Point for the first time and my wife was very afraid of heights. I was worried that it would not be a good experience, but she decided she wanted to ride Maverick first because it was not as tall as some of the others. She liked it enough to decide she wanted to jump all the way to Millennium Force next, since it was the tallest and scariest to her (Dragster was taller but didn't have a lift hill, so she didn't worry as much). She was very anxious the first ride, then decided we should do it again immediately. That time it wasn't bad and she could just be present. Then she thought we should do it one more time, and that time she could actually enjoy the ride and had a great experience. Now she swears by doing the scary ride 3 times in a row to conquer the fear and it's worked every time. She's now built up a list of almost 250 coaster credits and can genuinely say that she really enjoys going to amusement parks now.

As someone who hadn't been on an inverting coaster until the age of 17 but being obsessed with them before then but too afraid, I can tell you that just being pushed on it by family worked for me. The ride that first got me into the actual coasters was Baron 1898 af Efteling and after that I couldn't get enough of them, I had been on the smaller rides but never the big ones. After that I went on a trip to Toverland and was wayy less scared to go on rides like fenix and Troy

I had just recently got over my fear of coasters after being in love with them for a long time. It's weird to say but I had always been so invested with them but every time I went to a theme park, my anxiety would take over and would prevent me from going on rides that I knew would be fun. Now that it's been about 2-3 years since I had last ridden or even been invested in coasters, my anxiety had gone down a ton and I didn't amp myself up as much. It caused for a much better experience and the ride that got me out of this constant fear was Cheetah Hunt at Busch Gardens Tampa. I'm not sure what it was that was different but I enjoyed it so much compared to anything else I had ridden. This could have been because of me growing up more and becoming more matured or even my anxiety lessening, but it's probably the happiest I had felt on a rollercoaster.
If anything, the downside is having a constant hunger to ride more and more coasters. This feeling of finally being free from this fear that held me back is so much better than imagined. Since I overcame it, I have ridden coasters I had always wanted to experience. Whether it be inverted, floorless, hyper, dive, as well as manufacturers and different elements. Being the coaster nerd that I am, I felt like I had a giant list of ride types and inversions to experience and its all coming true now.
I can't recommend enough just finding that courage to push yourself to do it. If you can't do it no matter how hard you try, then do it another time. But if you ever know that you want to do something deep down even though your body is saying no, just go through with it and it will be so worth it.

disney coasters are the perfect starter in my opinion because they're not as patronizingly babyish as others but they also aren't meant to be super thrilling as they focus more on scenery and theming to go along with the ride experience. Many of them are built around artificial terrain too, so you won't notice the heights as you climb each lift hill. Riding non-coaster attractions may also be helpful for acclimating and desentizing yourself with the motions a coaster may produce.

I’ve actually done some crazier coasters here lately (Lightning Rod and Mystery Mine at Dollywood to be exact), but the height fear was only lessened because I had taken some anxiety medication beforehand. Perhaps I should just always bring anxiety medicine with me, but I’d like to get over the height anxiety without resorting to medication everytime lol

Both of the coasters you mention are terrain coasters - they hug closer to the ground than most. Seeking out more like this are a good stepping stone, since they generally don't go very high, including on the lift hill. Also consider launch coasters, since these do not have a long, slow lift hill to give you time to think about the height you're reaching.
If you're thinking of trying the flooding method, consider drop towers, since these tend to reach the greatest heights, whilst also being over very quickly.

I always keep my eyes closed on the way up on a coaster. Seeing how high up I am tends to freak me out. I know this is several months late but thought I’d put my two cents since I’m still struggling with height myself, in fact it’s the only hurdle I have left before I can officially conquer my coaster fears.
What helps me the most is firstly do not look to your left or right as you climb up the hill to see how high up you are. Secondly try to sit anywhere but the front so that you can focus on the seat in front of you, being in the front will inevitably force you to look down during the first drop. Lastly launch coasters are your best friend as they take you up so fast you won’t have time to register the height before your already plummeting down the drops.

For me I had a traumatic carnival experience as a kid nearly falling out, so my fear was always around falling out/ride malfunction. Getting the right group was important, but the key was just finding the right ride. For me that was Rock n Rollercoaster at Disney World. Disney felt the furthest from a low budget carnival, and it being indoors meant I couldn't overthink things in queue. It may sound counterintuitive, but going upside down actually made things easier, because you get an overhead restraint which feels more protected. Took awhile for me to ride anything with a lap bar restraint. I've since gone on some of the tallest and fastest out there (but I still won't touch a carnival)! Oh and don't start with wooden, even if they look less intense - they aren't.

    1. ride with a friend or a family member, it helps ease off the nerves and lets you experience the ride with them
    2. try and build up the rides during the day. i usually find myself not remembering the feeling of liking rollercoasters and the adrenaline until i ride an intense ride
    3. just do it. instead of thinking about how it’ll feel, or how scary it is, just jump on and ride it. it lets you go on many more rides and have more fun.

Great video to help people get into coasters. I personally used to be terrified of any sort of thrill ride and didn’t know of any method to help me get on them either. Turns out I used the “flooding” approach one day while not even realizing it. At my local county fair, there was an assortment of rides of all thrill levels and I was horrified of the upper half. One time though, the scariest ride to me was right next to one of my favorites for my level of thrills at the time and had no wait at all. I got off the previous ride and noticed the minimal wait and just hoped in line because I already had my adrenaline pumping and felt like I could do it. I ended up absolutely adoring the intense ride and I eventually branched off to learn about the amusement industry to where I am today. Now I’m a full blown enthusiast pretty much.

For me, it was just the idea of a rollercoaster. It was being suspended hundreds of feet in the air, going upside-down and doing crazy manoeuvres multiple times for minutes straight. The first 'big' rollercoaster I did was Millennium at Fantasy Island, ingoldmells, England. Not to get confused with Millennium Force at Cedar Point in Ohio. This ride has 3 inversions, 2 vertical loops and 1 sidewinder. It's a very good Vekoma as being very smooth and not to tall although it is the 8th fastest in England, that doesn't really mean to much as there are not as many coasters in England anyways. The model is a Vekoma MK1200 that got discontinued shortly after it debuted in 1999. 1 thing that stopped me doing it was putting aside for half an hour and going to a different section of the park instead of just saying "I will do it," or, "I won't do that 100%" In my opinion just do it. Although easier said than done, it won't be that bad at all. If you read this far then you're very cool. Thanks.

To be honest, I really miss the uneasy sensations, especially during airtimes and drops. I've ridden so many roller coasters to the point that I couldn't feel those sensations anymore.
One thing I've learned from my experience is to not be tense and fight the G-forces, but instead, to just relax and go with the flow. I strongly agree with you, COASTER BOT, that looking at the track makes it really helpful to expect the roller coaster's next move and enjoy them. That's what I exactly did. I beat my fear of roller coasters (or rather, discovered that I actually had no fear) by accidentally joining a trip to Fuji-Q.
I never had anyone to go with on coasters when I was a child - my father is mortally afraid of heights, my mother is mortally afraid of high speeds. I always thought I was afraid of coasters as well throughout my infancy and teenage years, which was supported by the fact that I also have a fear of (unguarded) heights (I cannot stand close to a skyscraper's open balcony or ride a balloon, but I can step on a glass pane installed in a skyscraper).
Well, some friends of mine invited me to Fuji-Q, to which I accepted without knowing more about the park. I invited another friend, who told me that Fuji-Q has some world-class rides and that this was the entire appeal of the park. Uh-oh.
Long story short, since I had already agreed to the hangout, I was not going to go back on my word. As preparation, I went to another park that is closer to where I live (Yomiuriland) and rode every single ride that I felt would challenge me. I discovered then that I was not afraid of roller coasters at all and that my fear was exclusively in my mind, which allowed me to go to Fuji-Q and enjoy the rides there without an issue.
For those who might feel afraid to take your first ride or face your first inversion, you might be exactly the same. The mind is a powerful thing, and it's surprising how anticipation might be, on its own, more anxiety-inducing than the ride itself.

Some of them ranging from veteran thrill riders to people more like me. It made me more confident. It's definitely a mental struggle for me since I tend to psych myself out during queue, but once I'm on it, I feel so much better knowing I'm safe. It's insane how safe coasters are and I'm grateful we can experience different types of thrill coasters. My first 'bigger' coaster was Hagrid at Universal Orlando and I am in love. I am going to try something just as fast next.

About 10 years ago I rode all roallercoasters at europa park as a newbie and I remember I nearly died of fear before the first drops. After a long break since then I now started to get used to rollercoasters again by regularly riding a smaller family coaster in my area. I feel like it‘s helping me to deal with other anxieties better in my life. I have no problem with loopings, launches or other intense forces, but my body still thinks it‘s going to die at every lifthill, because of a feeling of uncertainty and not having control over the situation at a „dangerous“ height. What I learned so far though is that it helps A LOT to not stare at the first drop, but took at the track ahead what‘s coming after. That reduces the fear of the unknown a lot. I hope I‘ll toughen up a bit more after riding a couple more times, because I love the feeling of having overcome something afterwards.

this video is fantastic! i had been scared of rollercoasters and heights for as long as i can remember. last summer, the summer of 2022, at the age of 28, i finally convinced myself to go to my local park, Kentucky Kingdom, and give them a real try. It took me a little while to actually get into line and, many deep breaths later, took on every coaster the park has. Shortly after that, we decided to go to my childhood park, the one my parents always took us to, Holiday World. I remember being terrified of looking up at the lift hill of the Voyage and, subsequently, never giving a single coaster at that park a chance. As of this summer, i have a season pass to Holiday World, have ridden every coaster in that park at least 5 times, and have plans to go to Kings Island this week to take on the next big steps in my coaster fear journey. Extremely excited and equally nervous to get on a coaster that tops 200 ft tall, and directly after one that hits 300 ft tall. All that being said, if i could make it happen and end up with this level of love for rollercoasters, so can you!

I have another way of getting over fear that wasn't mentioned - and that's having a ride close forever and you never got to ride it because you were too scared when you stood in front of it. It happened to me with Slammer at Thorpe, and when that ride didn't reopen it caused me to snap out of my fear of flat rides forever, and now I strive to do at least everything at least once.
I realise this is just a rephrasing of 'FOMO' (fear of missing out) which admittedly plays a big role in my theme park adventures but I hope some can agree that it's another way of getting over fear.

I've have a fear of intensity of the rollercoaster and previously had a bad experience where I was pushed on to Matterhorn bobsleds at Disneyland and made afraid of all rollercoasters until I was like 13. So I have gone to Six Flags Magic Mountain but only got myself to go on Apocalypse and Colossus (just before it was torn down) and I tried to go on other rides but I was too freaked out to go on any other coasters.

Apocalypse is probably more intense than a lot of other coasters. Going upside down isn't so bad.

When I first started riding roller coasters I always used to avoid any inverted coasters or coasters with loops because I was afraid they would be too intense. I used to ride only wooden coaster or hyper coasters with huge drops. I have always enjoyed these types of coasters. It wasn’t until I went on a roller coaster with my wife that I finally was able to ride a looping coaster with many inversions and corkscrews. This has helped me get over this fear and now I have no fear of roller coasters anymore. In fact, inversions and loops are my favorite part of roller coasters because you feel weightless for one second. What also helped me get over my fear is that they’re designed to make you feel this way. Every roller coaster is different depending on where you go. Overall, going with someone close to you and accepting that roller coasters are designed to do this has helped me become fearless.

I love roller coasters now but i have to thank my dad for that lol, when i was 9 or 10 years old i was terrified of rollercoasters and we went to a theme park and we went in a smaller one first and he told me this is the worst one so with full confidence i went into the bigger one not nowing it was the most intense one and it went up and i looked at my dad and told him this one is alot higher as it went up to 68 meters but i ended up really enjoying the ride and since than i have loved every part of the roller coasters i ride today

I like showing these to my friends who are a little younger and weigh a little more than me to try and convince them to slowly get over their fears. Heck, I even use these to help the little bit of it I have myself.
But these are nice. Definitely showing more of these to my friends so that one summer we can all go to either Six Flags or Cedar Point or maybe even both!

Could you make a video on how to deal with nausia at amusement parks? I half got over my fear a couple years ago when I road steeple chase at coney island and surprisingly to me I loved it, but then the next time I went I got sick on a flat ride and didn't ride anything else that day. Maybe next time I'll find a way to not get sick and ride something bigger like the Cyclone! It would be interesting to know if anti-sickens pills work, what kind of rides to avoid, and if you get less likely to get sick the more rides you try.

Motion sickness, usually when your force sensory inside your head doesn't match the visual from your eyes. That confusion will overload your brain, make the nausea.
For some ride, it is inevitable eventually. But, you can reduce it by simply moving your head, reacting to force the ride induce. Or in other words, exaggerating your head movement, don't hold it.

    • @panthera_

You can also take motion sickness pills like Dramamine. Won’t completely fix it but it’ll delay it or at least mellow it for awhile.

I had to overcome my fear of coasters the hard way. A day at CP in 2018. After my first ride on Gatekeeper I knew that I wanted to travel around and get on as many coasters as possible.
I also find it helpful to ride with someone who isn’t afraid of coasters at all. For example when I took a friend from work to KI he was terrified. I rode with him encouraged him and in general remained calm and that seemed to help. Later that day I was able to get him to ride Orion with his eyes open the entire time

I overcame my fear at what I think is the best resort to do it at, Disneyland. I started with a couple small ones like BTMRR and the Matterhorn but then I said f it and hopped on the incredicoaster USING LIGHTNING LANE. No time to overthink, I had all the time to enjoy. I loved it. I know it’s not massive but it’s a great intermediate coaster. The one more intense thrill ride isn’t a coaster but GOTGMB is always fun. Then in NYC I did m first real INTENSE coaster, Cyclone. Heaps of airtime and laterals and well, now im an enthusiast and crave the adrenaline you get from coasters.

One thing that really helped me was going with a friend. Not just because o had someone there to distract me, especially in line, but also because he worked as a kind of "safety measure" to prevent me from backing out of even getting on the ride. It doesnt even have to be someone you're super close with, it can just be like a neoghbor or something. Just someone to help you through

I used to be terrified of coasters but now love them, and the method of starting small worked amazingly. I think a wild mouse is a good "starter" coaster because its design makes it look very tame, but it's still fun. I might be biased though, because a wild mouse at legoland got me over my fear.

Oblivion was the coaster that scared me. Went on Friday to AT and got to Oblivion just as it was re-opening so we walked the queue line and straight on to the train I didn’t even have time to think about it and no trains on the track already made it easier too. Definitely would recommend this way if possible.

When I was young my family took me to a park to celebrate my birthday. I was happy but I was able only to ride small rides. When my father asked me to go on a coaster I said no because I was so afraid (namely of the unknown).
Some months later my parents gifted me Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, and by playing this fantastic game, I was able to understand how coasters worked, and I became really interested in them. When I came back to the park, I was so eager to ride coasters and had a great time!

My first coaster was The Voyage at Holiday World. My parents made me ride it the year it was built. Needless to say, it terrified me for 2 years. One day i decided to ride it by myself and when i was just about to go down the first drop, i just opened my eyes and threw my hands up. I then got an experience that i deeply enjoyed and to this day i have rode The Voyage 381 times. I strongly suggest to those who are afraid to try the flooding aproach. it can be a truly fun experience! Also dont ride if you feel like youre being forced to, that can lead to major fear and hatred of coasters. Happy riding Yall.

This attitude must be stamped out. It could have gone very badly if you had sensory overload from the forces. If my parents had done that to me, I expect I would have resented them for months if not years. It must ALWAYS be the final decision of the rider to board.

When I first went to an amusement park when I was like 11, I was terrified of basically all rollercoasters (but somehow not so much of free fall atracctions). Every time I went in one, I ended up screaming out of fear and closing my eyes. I even once ended up fainting for a sec. Now I enjoy them sooo much. I think I overcame my fear thanks to water park rides. In my area, there were not many land amusement parks, so I ended up going to the water one several years in a row, every time hyping myself to ride the new and scarier atractions

I used to love roller coasters as a child and was ready to ride the Fury 325 when it first came out. But then I developed a generalized anxiety and fear of falling and I hate deep drops in coasters. I'm not afraid that I will fall out, but I just don't like the physical feeling of falling in general. My heart also feels like it's going to stop when I'm on high-speed rides. So I think I missed my chance to ride the Fury 325, but I have tried almost every coaster at Six Flags New England so I'm not letting this fear stop me. Maybe one day I will work my way up to the Fury 325.

I really liked this video because it used a lot of psychology (It's one of my favourite subjects) and did actually explain the reasons behind these fears. For me, its not being in control (the restraints make this worse, as I once I feel trapped I become extremely nervous), and safety (I always have horrible thoughts about bad things happening on rides, and that if I go on one I'll get "unlucky").
Problem is, I WANT to enjoy rollercoasters, but these fears have prevented me for years- I get to the station after being in the queue and bail out last minute. I've even ridden Stealth at Thorpe Park, and my first experience on it wasn't great (probably one of the most extreme rides there, but it's fun). For some reason, rollercoasters scare me less overall than stationary rides (e.g. I find Rush at Thorpe Park more terrifying than Colossus) - so I do have my limits!
Nevertheless, thank you for this. Along with this video and recently having gone to a funfair (having more experience of restraints) I can hopefully finally go to theme parks with my friends and be more than just a bag holder!
