    I don’t think people realize how complex coasters are, I worked one at Cedar point and the control panel for it is huge with a million buttons and there is so much to rides people never realize that

    • @demoniack81
      @demoniack81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Do you guys have control over the force of the trim brakes around the track? I was at Mirabilandia this weekend and we rode Katun like a million times, including almost an hour nonstop before the park closed. It felt as though once the operators saw that the only people left were the ones getting off only to run back to the entrance, they turned the trim brakes way down. We harldy slowed at all at the trim brakes and the final brake run before the station almost pulled my face off a few times.
      (edit: not that I'm complaining 😂)

    • @charliew1822
      @charliew1822 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      So the control panel is only the tip of the iceberg as far as just the control aspect of a ride goes. The PLC cabinets are a mess of complex systems. Trims on rides cannot be manually controlled on anything more recent that 1990. They are usually set to apply various amounts of braking force based on the speed of the train, which moves slower when lighter. So if you were the only few people on the ride, the train was probably running slow enough to not need to be trimmed by the system

Six Flags, old run down rollercoaster, young me excited for first coaster, got in, old seatbelts, seatbelt broke and I had to hold on the the bar for my life and the guy next to me also helped hold me down. Don't be scared of riding rollercoaster, I've ridden a lot of them (from small children's rides, to coasters with 14 inversions). In Western countries and Japan, there are so many safety measures, and the laws are were scrict. 2 people die in a rollercoaster accident a year (worldwide, including China), sound crazy huh? Well this number translate into: the chance of dying on a coasters is 1:600000, that safer than flying, walking down strairs and driving a car. Six Flags coasters aren't dangerous, but a lot of them can use a new coat of paint!
      Bottom line: don't be so scared, it's way safer than you might assume!

      Omg me too! Ceder Point 1999, I got flung out. I'm just under 5 ft, and weight would have been around 120 then. The shoulder restraint, didn't go down enough? I slid under it, I was like "Oh I'm fine, it'll grab again." Nope, busted upper arm, and twisted ankle, I fell into the 3 ft deep water.

    As a kid, as fun as rollercoasters are, they were quite terrifying. As I got older, I felt more fun from them! Hopefully, riders will always be safe, as less than 10% of amusement park injuries are due to coasters.

    4:16 - "These rides aren't for everyone". So true. The problem is that if you go on a roller coaster and find you experience (mostly psychological) issues, there's still no escape.
    Which is why I think that rider controlled roller coasters that you can stop and alight from, at stations between intense elements, are the way forward. There is no need for such carefully choreographed uses of potential energy, when you could compensate for lack of speed by using Drive Tires and LSMs.

      Well buddy, you're about to reach the Peak of 93 meters, you're about to experience a plummet at speeds up to 151 Kilometers per hour, and down you go. you drop at an angle of 80 degrees and You feel weightless for three seconds. and there comes a huge turn that's very high off the ground (an overbank), now you're Going trough a turn near to the ground while going trough a tunnel, and four seconds later you go over a hill, the hill makes you feel weightless. and down you go. (Airtime hill) and now you're going trough another turn that gradually increases in height and lowers in a time of around 8 seconds. now you're heading towards another high off the ground turn (overbank) and you come back down and enter a 20 degree turn. Now you're going over a smaller hill, and you feel, once again, weightless. Now, you enter another tunnel which also has a turn, which takes three seconds, and now you're going over a really small hill that makes you fly up against the safety restraint, preventing you from being launched out of your seat. now you enter a 35 degree Turn that takes around 2 seconds, and then you go straight for a very short time, then you enter another turn that's pretty high off the ground (Overbank) and you go back down. You start to go slower in a short period of time. now, you enter another very small turn and slow down even further. then you go straight and you roll into the loading station, the place where you got in. now your safety bar infront of you opens, and you step out and exit to the left side.
      _and yes, I did just describe the entire ride experience on Millenium force_

    One symptom that may prop up from modern rollercoasters is Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS) and is a common phenomenon with passengers disembarking cruise liners. When your inner ear fluid is put under a similar movement or force over time, such as the swaying back and forth of a cruise ship or the suspension of inner ear fluid from 'airtime', you can develop weightlessness, nausea and vertigo due to the brain trying to compensate the days stress - only to cause confusion when you go back to normal situations.

    They don't experience more or less gravitational force. Gravitational force is always constant(when we are only talking about things that happen around Earth's surface).
    G-force is just a scale for force. When the scale is used, it does not mean the force is a gravitational force.
    Moreover, your mass and weight will not change when you are having a ride. (In fact only the feeling of your own weight is changed)
    We experience more or less force (measure in g-force scale), just because the acceleration/force need, as a certain centripetal force are necessary for the loop.
    The gravitational force's magnitude & direction is never changed. It just affect the force needed in the circular motion in a slightly complicated way, as the track is not in a closed loop, which is not a perfect circle.
    The gravitational force slow/speed up the cart's if it is 0/180 degree to the cart's direction. It compensate/resists the centripetal force if it is in 90 degree to the cart's direction (0/180 degree to the track's normal/tangent line). It do both of the above things if it is an angle in between, the portion is always given by cos (cos(90) is 0 , cos(0) is 1, cos(180) is -1).
    You experience more gravitational force because of the illusion. What you really feel is the normal force from the ground/cart/track (the feeling of your own weight). When gravity compensate the centripetal force, the ground/cart/track give less normal force, and you experience a lesser pull (but it is not a real lesser gravitational pull/ weight, and the actually pull is pulling you upwards when the gravity is completely compensating. We all know gravity pull downwards. RMB you are now upside down on the roller coaster ) (normally we feel gravity pulling us downward when the normal force are pointing upward, rmb they are action and reaction pair when you are stationary on ground).
    Your physics teacher will says " the force is 5 times as your weight" but not "your weight become 4 times bigger".

    • @jellyboy00
      @jellyboy00 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1:45 I just want to point out gravity is never multiplied (it is a constant)
      4:05 and your weight is never changed (but only the feel about one's own weight is changed)
      (what really exerted is the normal force from the track/cart)

    I used to love roller coasters, then a few years ago I rode Apollo's Chariot at Busch Gardens WIlliamsburg and experienced gray-outs every time the coaster hit a trough. It was pretty frightening as a grayish circle closed on my vision. I had to look up what was happening. I rode a significantly smaller and slower coaster later and it happened again. I haven't ridden a roller coaster since. :(

    • @triple7marc

      Gray-outs are common and safe. They happen to me all the time on coasters and I don’t care one bit. If you want to try and avoid them, make sure you get adequate sleep before riding, stay hydrated and try not to ride when you’re sick.

    one thing u forgot to mention is the body’s tolerance for negative g is much lower, it’s not safe to have negative g’s for more than a few seconds because the blood rushes to ur head, and if u go over something like 2 negative gs it can cause severe eye and brain damage
