I just completed reading the book and curiously came here to search for a movie....in a word TREASURE ISLAND is awesome, adventurous and kinda horror..i like the twists of the story❤🤯
The first time I read "Treasure Island stivenson" reminds me of a book my late grandfather gave me for my birthday. Orson Welles is also a great director. I can't forget the voice of the one-legged Silver Captain's pet parrot named "Flint" hysterically shouting "8 silver coins, 8 silver coins...".
It may not be the best version out there, but this is the one I saw as a young boy in South Africa. Perfect Saturday morning matinee stuff for young lads. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Orson Welles was a great actor but I needed subtitles a lot of the time because I don't speak "mumble" - for me Robert Newton will always be the best Long John Silver
On a sailboat, the flag nevr wave directly behind its direction of travel. When running, which means the wind comes directly from behind, the flag is blowing to the bow.

Sadly, even with incredible Orson Wells, this remake can't _"hold a candle"_ to the original 1950 film with perfectly cast Robert Newton as Long John Silver and Bobby Driscoll as little Jim Hawkins....!!! Plus, Walter Slazak's character here bordered on the unnecessarily Silly.... Too funny here too that the mutinied pirates leave the ship for "treasure island" with 8 men on board, then loose *6 dead* during the stockade shoot-out, and still have 4 escape after the shoot-out to hook back-up with Sliver = 5 Alive....Then back in the stockade, there's 5 mutineers with Silver = NOW 6 ALIVE after the treasure!🤣 Sadly too, beautiful shots of the clipper throughout the film, though never that fine ship in Full Sail.....???? 🤪
The only good about this version is the color grading and the prop. It really suit the mood of 18th century. But I agree the 1950 version has better ship.
Comments are often uninformed or not to the point and this is the case here, too. The book is an adventure story, written for young adults in 1883, not meant for the sophisticated mind. Someone pointed out, that Walter Slezak portrayed Squire Trelawney as “silly” - which is indeed the way he is described in the book. A naive blabbermouth, perfectly played by Slezak. Many laments are made about Orson Welles’ mumbling - probably the actor’s way to disguise his American accent and assume a vaguely English one. What he said was perfectly understandable. It appears that many are reluctant to attempt reading the book.. Critique, however, is offered readily, showing all too often no knowledge about the subject matter, but proudly displaying the ability to use swear words.
This really does just dwell on the forefront of your mind at all times, and makes it impossible for you to live in the moment as a free man enjoying what you will.
There seems to be some great pirate-y dialogue, but unfortunately, a lot of it is delivered so gutturally that it is incoherent. The tone is very effective, but a little more clarity would have been appreciated. Still, quite an enjoyable telling of this classic tale.
I read the translated version of "Treasure Island" in the early 90's as a kid. Now after 35 years, I see this. Awesome work!

It should have been saying: "pieces of eight, pieces of eight."
"Pieces of eight" means an old silver Spanish coin; worth 8 reales.

Why does the parrot say that?

are you kidding ? he's awful. Wooden acting and mumbling incomprehensibly
He was fonged from boozing when he did the dialogue, that's why we can't understand a word he said.

Wonder how many times it has been filmed. New woke version wold probably include Short Jane Silver
Do you need to bring your prejudices to a film so old and a public, that mainly does not know what you are talking of?

Or short black Jane even more so.
But seriously, these idiots are going to hit the rocks fairly soon, and the sharks will be waiting for them...

Jim's mother in Trelawney's trap with Dr. Livesey. "Jim, we're going to Squire Trelawney's house to tend to his sick servant." Yeah right!!!
I've probably seen every film rendition of the novel and this is imo the better one.

The 1990 version is the best
Orson Welles as a mumbling, ineffective Long John Silver.
Very amazing movie Jim is very cute and the dr livesey is very hot my favourite movie thanks for uploading

The 1934 and 1990 films are excellent too.
