For me this sits side by side with the Jessica Biel remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre from right around that same time. I love the original Hills Have Eyes, but for people of a certain age who wouldn't yet appreciate the original mainly because of its age, this is a great version of that story for fans of more modern horror movies.
This is genuinely a “pedestal” remake that all horror remakes should follow as a standard. This movie not only felt fresh, but it told a better story and updated everything the original was behind on. This should be the lowest bar and writers/directors should easily go beyond that.

I was 7 when this movie was newer, and it was on cable one night at like midnight. I wasn't supposed to be up, but I was anyways and I was flipping through channels and landed on this film. It was about half way through the movie where Doug is wondering through the nuketown with the dog (Beast), and everything from the atmosphere to the soundtrack, to the twilight zone type vibe really intrigued me. It's been my favorite movie ever since!
Yeah I actually got to see this with my parents when I was a kid as they rented it from the video store back when it was new and I watched it with them. I still can’t believe they let me watch something like this lol I love it though and have rewatched it many times since then. As a matter of fact i even own it now.
This is one of the few horror movies that scares the shit out of me. Easily in my top 3 scariest movies ever. Not top 3 favorite but certainly top 3 scariest.

In my top 5 horror remakes, along with The Thing (1982), The Fly (1986), House On Haunted Hill (1999) and Dawn of the Dead (2004). It's brutal, raw, in your face, and unrelenting. While I love the original for it's grittiness and overall bleak and dark 70's atmosphere, the remake just feels more visceral and disturbing to me.
Its like a more simplified Last of Us, yet somehow equally badass with the shots of Doug holding the baby and dog. The shots are so crazy man I cant even describe it
This and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake where the first horror movies i saw when i was a kid. They're what made me go back and find the original Halloween and fall in love with the genre. For that i give the hills have eyes a near perfect score. Its probably my favorite remake from the early to mid 2000s.
This is easily one of the better remakes for me. The original is good, a classic. But this remake really went off the rails with the brutality and just how vile the mutant family is.
I’d recommend checking out a graphic novel that came out with the release of hills have eyes 2 called The Hills Have Eyes the Beginning. It’s a prequel to both this and the sequel and fleshes out the mutants way more especially the ones in part 2.
Haven't even watched the video yet and I'm already super happy lol This is one of my favorite horror movies and I'm sooo glad you're finally reviewing it!
I really love the fact they changed the antagonists and made them these creepy cannibalistic mutants. I find that faaaaaaaaar more terrifying than the original, although I wouldn’t mind seeing another remake with the antagonists being similar to the ones in the original but- as far as this remake is concerned, I absolutely love it. I really love this film so damn much. I watched this as a kid without seeing the trailer and it genuinely disturbed me to my core. The shocking brutality and grotesque looking villains, and even the setting just makes this film the scariest movie in my personal opinion. I’d much rather have Jason Vorhees chasing me than having a bunch of cannibals looking to kill and consume me. Also can we talk about the tagline of this film? “The lucky ones die first.” HOW FUCKING CREEPY AND EERIE IS THAT?!?! 😱😱😱😱
I watched this when it first came out and thought it was a good movie. Figured at some point it would be good for a rewatch. I tried to rewatch it sometime last summer and got about half way through it and had to turn it off because it bothered me so much. Something happened as I've gotten older that has made movies like this incredibly hard to watch, almost to the point that I don't even bother with one watch even for horror sake. Its well done and it makes you feel exactly how you should, I will say that. Its visceral, gritty, and you walk away feeling very heavy. ALSO...Did not even realize that was Buffalo Bill and now my mind is a little bit blown!
Pretty good movie overall. My favorite part was definitely Laura Ortiz as Ruby; she's just an adorable lady and did a great job here. Thus, she ended up being pretty much the only even semi-good thing about that awful Victor Crowley movie.
So honestly I was a little bummed out that this movie is SO similar that it kind just feels like a remaster at times lol. However I loved the final act of Doug going through to get Catherine back.
This one is definitely on my list of top horror remakes alongside, John Carpenter's The Thing, Tom Savini's Night of the Living Dead and the Zack Snyder Dawn of the Dead. Excellent review, eager for more.
I really appreciate these review series. For me, this movie was always too much for me to get through. I do prefer the original Wrong Turn because it has a similar premise but the sexual violence is almost nonexistent. Those kinds of scenes are incredibly hard for me to get through and even if I can, they stick with me longer and affect my mood for several days if not weeks. Same with Se7en, the sexual violence is mostly through a retelling but it is so well executed and effective that movie is hard for me to get through to get past that scene. I do remember the sequel to this remake more than I do the hard parts of this one so I’m excited to continue on this series.
I'll admit it. I tuned into this movie once when it was on cable and once I saw that the monsters were actually raping women, I couldn't watch anymore. Got this thing about any kind of actual rape I cannot stand to see in any movie or TV show. I can't even watch that episode of the Sopranos where Lorraine Bracco's character gets raped, ever again. Only saw it once but I've seen the rest of the entire series 3 or 4 times.
There is actually a Hills Have Eyes 3... Starring Lance Henricksen.... its also called Mind Ripper.... i've just heard of it, never seen it. Love your videos Cody, great content!
My dad snuck me into the movie to watch this(in Canada it was rated R and they actually ID you in movie theatres here). It’s one of my favourite horror movies because of the awesome theatre experience I had with my dad and everyone in that theatre was having a good time. Edit: at the time the only negative I had with the film is I wanted more character development from the in this movie mutants - as opposed to the original the mountain men seemed more realistic almost where as the remake seemed like it was a better Wrong Turn movie with the Hills have Eyes title… if that makes sense. Either or it’s still a great movie I watch every summer including the original. Great reviews dude 👍🏽
My dad rented this when I was 9. I have no idea why he left me watch it, it left me scared for weeks like I was crying and throwing up just by seeing the DVD cover lmaoo. I was so relieved when he had to return it😆
I REALLY could not handle this movie. I walked out of the room during the "rape/breast feeding scene"---while holding a gun to the baby's head. No. NO. I was done at that point. My brother's girlfriend played this movie at her house, I didn't go to the theater to see this. Hats off to anybody that can watch this movie---ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Green Inferno is another rough one too. Anyhow, great review, Cody. I greatly enjoyed this movie review-----I will not be watching this movie, though. Lol. It's rough.......
0:21 New Mexico* ;) definitely agree with your points though. I would have liked for the mutants to have more dialogue and maybe see the “normal” side of them like in the original. The only time you really get that is when you hear Big Brains communicating with Lizard through the walkie-talkie after the trailer attack and lizard just casually says “he’s keepin an eye on em” referring to Goggle. And Jupiters character got screwed over big time. He doesn’t get screen time at all and I would have liked to heard him talk more.
I don’t think I ever saw this but now I wanna check it out. It sounds like a cool little movie Btw I believe Aja is pronounced like “A-zjah.” My French is very rusty lol.

Oh man, I can't wait to see your thoughts on The Hills Have Eyes 2, hahaha! I liked it as an "edgy" teenager because of how disgusting it is. I was all about enjoying the most disturbing and gross shit I could find in movies at that time. It was such a fucked up movie that I was so into the gore and brutality that I never realized just how shit it actually is as a movie. The characters are a joke, the dialogue is attrocious, pacing is terrible, and basically everything about it sucks. It takes a HUGE dip in quality even when it comes to the gore because the first remake used so much practical effects but the second one relies WAY too heavily on CGI gore and when I watched it again for the first time in many years and realized just how bad it looks, I can't even enjoy the gore anymore. It's actually pretty crazy that until recently I never realized that Wes Craven and his son both co-wrote that movie. I NEVER would have expected something so bad from Craven.
i remember seeing this movie i think on my older cousin's watch party with his gf at the time... in 2006 i was maybe 10 years old and being a very tall shaggy headed kid who's awkward as hell with a few grizzly looking scars on my face (i had fallen from a tree and split my face open) somehow got me a whole bunch of references to this movie but i still love this movie because it just does accomplish almost everything that it set out to do
I have not seen the 2006 The Hills have eyes remake but want to. I have heard excellent reviews on it. Some horror fans rank it as a top 5 or top 10 horror best remakes of all time and definitely one of the best horror remakes of the 2000's. Another great review Cody!
Easily in my top ten horror remakes and all of your comments I practically agree on. I never quite liked the original, I respect it but it wasn't for me whereas I think the 2006 is a much leaner, cohesive whole. Love this film, great review 👍🙂
The Hills Have Eyes is great, I recently rewatched it and it was good. But when I first watched it... oh my god. This movie is crazy. The scene where they light the dad on fire to lure everybody out of the trailer then go in the trailer and do stuff to the daughter and mom is insane. It's very brutal but still entertaining and one of the best horror movies I've seen
Are you planning to this movie from Wes Craven. Invitation to Hell Matt Winslow moves with his wife, Patricia, and children, Chrissy and Robert, to an upper-middle class suburban neighborhood in Southern California from the midwest. Matt, an engineer, has taken a new job at Micro-DigiTech, a technology corporation housed in a large, windowed skyscraper near town. His new project entails a thermally-reinforced state-of-the-art space suit. Upon arriving, they are met by their friends, Mary and Tom Peterson, who also live in the community.
I like the original and the remake..it just goes to show that from something made in the 70’s and had better character development and then remade in the 2000’s and can still hold up the name (without character development), but added other good qualities is still Great horror movie making. Thanks for posting this video.
I felt so uncomfortable after watching this movie that I haven't re watched it since. However, I loved your review of it and the points you made helped me find appreciation for it as a piece of media.
This is one of my most favorite slasher films if all time. It’s extremely intense and psychologically torturing. The trailer scene traumatized me to death back then but I kept on watching this one for fear tolerance.
And a little did you know one of the movie theater employees that was tired of living there working there, put THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 on before some kind of kids movie the next day as his way of protesting and quoting the job. Many parents and many children were disturbed by the dead baby scene in the beginning
I just watched the 1977 movie the other day. I find it very similar to the remake. The 2006 is much more intense. I dared myself to watch haute tension last night. (The scariest movie I've ever seen). Alexandra Aja is an amazing film maker. That man must go to deep parts of his mind to make the movies he does. I haven't heard of anything new, other than CRAWL from him. He's definitely gotten softer in comparison to his works in the 2000s.
I love this movie. It's bso good. One of the best remakes out there in my opinion. I thought the cast was really good. The gore and the kills were so great. Completely brutal and awesome ❤️❤️💖💖
Wasn't that opening remark basically the entire premise of Cabin in the Woods? Aaron Stanford's character is proven right in the end: he didn't need no gun. And the sound design is the thing that makes the gore work; the gore itself is relatively subdued for both the time and Aja, but with the sound.... you hear every fiber getting ripped, every bubble popping, every squelch and slip... It manages to come very close to being funny with it, without ever crossing that line...

i remember seeing this movie i think on my older cousin's watch party with his gf at the time... in 2006 i was maybe 10 years old and being a very tall shaggy headed kid who's awkward as hell with a few grizzly looking scars on my face (i had fallen from a tree and split my face open) somehow got me a whole bunch of references to this movie but i still love this movie because it just does accomplish almost everything that it set out to do
That final fight scene with Pluto was based on the fight between Alabama and Virgil in True Romance.
One of the better remakes in horror, especially like Doug’s arc
I do agree with you on,in the original they were human like and in the 2006 version they are mutants
Good job cody loving the Wes Craven flims reviews
You have me about to go back and re watch em both right now
This movie was like a huge ball of Stress. As soon as the tires get blown out the suspense kicked in and never let up.
@Autumn Blood Do you realize the original is actually about 16 minutes shorter than the remake?
Basically this and 03’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre are my favorite remakes
The Hills Have Eyes is great, I recently rewatched it and it was good. But when I first watched it... oh my god. This movie is crazy. The scene where they light the dad on fire to lure everybody out of the trailer then go in the trailer and do stuff to the daughter and mom is insane. It's very brutal but still entertaining and one of the best horror movies I've seen
The background is really cool
I love the codes. Always great content.
It's rare to get a solid remake...The Hills have eyes 2006 & Texas chainsaw Massacre 2003 are the only horror remakes I do like.
If i had a most anticipated review of the year list this would be #1
😂 Hey man new fan here. This is my first watch of your channel. Definitely have a new subscriber 🎯 AWESOME take on the connections and comparisons.
Finally !! It's been like 3 days since ur last vid !!!
Waiting on this one. This was far better than the original imo.
the remake is great this is the case when the remake is better then the original
The Hills Have Eyes 2006 is one of the few remakes that outdoes the original. Such a brutal yet great movie
I love that Movie. It is easily in my Top 10 of all time.
I like the original and the remake..it just goes to show that from something made in the 70’s and had better character development and then remade in the 2000’s and can still hold up the name (without character development), but added other good qualities is still Great horror movie making. Thanks for posting this video.
Hey man! Great review! Haven't watched one in awhile so catching up now 😂 hope life is good! Keep up the great work!
Really dug this review! Just discovered your channel!
Cody in intro you were spitting out facts. Btw love your vids
Please do a review on Eden lake mate
awesome shirt
When are we going to get the ranking of this franchise? Just wondering
Spot on with that intro lol
Fun Fact: There was comic follow-up that took place between Hills 1 and 2 that reveals the fate of Doug and his family.
This one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES I’m watching it tonight
Wasn't that opening remark basically the entire premise of Cabin in the Woods?
Aaron Stanford's character is proven right in the end: he didn't need no gun.
And the sound design is the thing that makes the gore work; the gore itself is relatively subdued for both the time and Aja, but with the sound.... you hear every fiber getting ripped, every bubble popping, every squelch and slip... It manages to come very close to being funny with it, without ever crossing that line...
