Love this video! It's amazing how much depth you achieved with only a few colors. Your running commentary is perfect, especially when you explain why you use a certain technique, and the close-ups are really helpful in showing detail. I went from "Do I *really* need to watch another 'how to paint a skull' video??" to "Yeah OK, I'm saving this one for future reference" in under 3 minutes. Edited ot add: Also, no joke on the sharpness of an Exacto knife - I have a 1" scar on my left index finger from when the Exacto I was using slipped & gashed it open back in 1977.

Such a pleasant change to have somebody get right into the tutorial without first waffling on about how great they are or going into needless detail about why they chose this particular brush or other pointless jibber-jabber.
I've gone crazy with skulls from Dollar Tree and Walmart. I had no idea to sand those lines out. Thank you for the teeth cleaning of the skull. Brilliant!

If you mix a little 5 minute epoxy and use a disposable brush you can put a gloss finish on the teeth… it really adds some additional reality to them.
Great idea!
You can also use Jeweler's "Needle Files" and/or "Flex Files" and/or a Dremel/Rotary tool to work the teeth and groove them and give them a realistic separation and look.

Those cracks in the skull are called sutures. They have a fibrous substance, mostly collagen, that connects the bones.

Amazing scale! We’d like to do this to a full skeleton we bought at target. I’m sure it’s a lot of the same process but wondered if you’ve ever done a full skeleton video?
No I haven't, but the same technique can be applied to a full skeleton. I want some of those too.

Once you whiten/brighten the teeth... several coats of a nice CLEAR, HIGH GLOSS Laqure makes them look VERY real!
Teeth take on a more dull gloss finish when dry. I've see actual human teeth at archeological sites here in Florida. They do shine but not wet looking. I didn't post the videos or photos to avoid potential controversial backlash. But yes, a shine will look good.

Is that acrylic paint? Might adapt this technique myself to make a resin skull look like it was found in the woods, which around here means lots of gray and green.
Yeah I like the easy clean up of acrylics. The only thing that isn't is the primer.

How much drying time are you allowing between each coat?
Acrylics dry really fast, if you are looking to speed things up, you can hit it with a hairdryer until the wet looking sheen flattens out. I like to give it a good solid hour or so.

What was the first colour you used please ?
The first color I used was called "Quinacridone Gold" but that color was discontinued by Golden because the lack of pigment availability. You can use a wash of Burnt Sienna and Yellow. Since this video came out Golden went through a lot of color changes because of the same issues with pigment availability.

This was most likely polypropylene. I always had issues with paint sticking to this type of plastic so that why I use a alkyd based primer. As for a resin skull model, are you making the mold and pouring the resin yourself? I would open the nose up to hide the fake shallowness, and cut deeper gaps in-between the teeth. But for a camera ready prop this isn't too shabby.
@@JungleJayAdventures Solid-- I figured that was your rationale for the alkyd, just wasn't sure whether or not it would have caused defomity.
I'll be 3D printing it! Right now debating whether to use standard SLA resins, or the sturdier engineering variants.
The gold paint is no longer available. Have you used the new color replacement and is it as good? I bought the sienna color thinking that is what you used because the start of the video says sienna. Then when re watching I see you are actually using gold.
yeah as long as you can swap it out for a good rich color you should be fine. I watered down each of the colors heavily. Besides, this project can be varied based on the artists liking. You don't have to adhere to this tutorials exact color pallet ;)

same application can be used as long as you have a good adhesion promoter like primer, etc.
I must've done something Very wrong. Used the same colors as you, but first coat came out a much more reddish color and too solid despite also using a sponge. Maybe too much Sienna
Maybe. Prime over it and start again. Make it very watery. Only need a little bit. Post it to my JJA FB page when you're done.
I am going to use your skull painting technique and use them atop tiki torches lite by flickering flame lite LED light bulbs

@@JungleJayAdventures There is a couple who does a You Tube video on a Flaming Tiki Torch but they use tiki torch fuel which to me is a little dangerous especially on dry grass
in month of October. I cut the top off of an old tiki torch and used a PVC pipe as the base and "aged" the pipe with a torch and painted it to look similar to bamboo, Run an extension cord with a flaming Munson flicker light on top of the skull.
That sounds cool. Might have to make a couple for next Halloween Bug Out camping trip.

Quinacridone Gold, by Golden brand Acrylic paints. Watered down. ;)

I'm assuming these are oil based paints?
Just the Primer, the rest was water based acrylics. Thats why I used the matte primer, it offers more "tooth" for the acrylics to actually stick. Otherwise it would just run off. The same method can be used for both alkyds or wb paints.
Colour is nice, but have you can’t just paint the eye socket to make it look realistic.
You’ll need to drill, carve and putty the eye sockets if you want realism. Same with the nose socket.
You need to construct those little bones.
I agree with you there fully. I figure If i will go that far I would opt for a better skull prop, not much likes to stick to Polypropylene.

$4.99 Halloween section at target. I like theirs the most.

Acrylics. But any type can be used. Alkyds will take longer to dry but will be more durable... Thank you for watching...

My skulls will be outside so I was wondering if you used something to weatherproof them and if so what?
if you are using acrylics I would use a water based polyurethane. I like Deft brand. They make a very good product. Anything with a solvent will ruin the acrylics. If you use enamels most solvent based sealers will work.

@@JungleJayAdventures It's funny that you say that since I served briefly with an Australian detachment in Vietnam in 1966 and they use to say "No worries mate" all the time.
All my best friends come from all over the world and I have a good friend from Sydney I used to be in a band with, he said it all the time and i picked it up. LOL He since moved back to Australia but we keep in touch.
