Ep.13 Did I find my first INAPPROPRIATE pottery mould? 🤭

- Let me explain a bit more about this video:
Welcome to the game of Smash or Pass the Mystery Mould edition!
Smash or Pass is a game where you make a yes or no decision on an object, person, or thing by using the word 'smash' or 'pass'. The game is typically played with 'smash' meaning yeah that's good and 'pass' meaning I will pass on that. However, as we smash the things we don't like in pottery and pass the things on that we do, I will be playing it the other way.
SMASH= The piece is not good and will not be going to the next stages. The piece will be smashed hehe not like the usual way.
CAST= it's good and I will take it to the next steps.
If you have been a long time follower you will know that I have my Mystery Mould series where I unveil these moulds one at a time and decorate them. The pieces that pass this game will feature in the series when I start it up again. The smashes will not but this video series gives me an opportunity to clear out some moulds that won't fit in my new studio or maybe aren't the best for the series. Some are seriously cursed!
But wait, won't it spoil the mystery?
Yes and No! The mystery mould series will return but will have a mix of pieces from this series as well as some picked randomly like normal. By the time I get to them, I think you will either have forgotten about the piece or be super eager to see how it comes to life in the series. I am actually excited to hear your ideas on the ones we do pass on to the series as I may be able to implement them into the video and the design of the artwork. I am excited for the debates and discussions about whether I made the right decision for each mould. I am also excited to cull some moulds so I have less to move when I get the shelves for my new space.
Wait, are you smashing the moulds??
Ok, not smashing the moulds! I am smashing the cast it makes inside. I will clean the moulds up and find new homes for them that will appreciate them. AS much as I can see potential in all the moulds, I do want to focus on the ones that spark the most inspiration, have the grooviest of ideas and can be shaped and crafted in new ways. The smashed moulds are great but great for someone else who they are a better fit for. I will share details where you can get these moulds very soon.

When you turned the mold so that we could see the faces. I immediately thought it's the other ghosts from Casper the Friendly Ghost.

The first covered container is designed for scented body powder which was applied with a palm sized fluffy powder puff or bigger, a touch of luxury.
Wow, that sounds really magical and wonderful! I might need to look into that and see how I can incorporate that when I work on that one again!

My grandma had a powder tin that was that shape.
"Without much ado" or "without further ado" comes from 14th c. English meaning "with little fuss and difficulties, we're going to do X." 'Ado' used to be used instead of 'to do.' So Shakespeare's 'much ado about nothing' is a play where there's a bunch of trivial fuss over misunderstandings and wounded pride where none needed to exist. I have seen several people confuse it with "adieu" though I don't know what they think French farewells have to do with anything.

Those "tear drops" are actually Ghost Heads. When I was a child (am now 54), a local home did the ceramic thing, and they had tons of those for Halloween. So many ways to use them! Dolls, Statues, lights, etc.
I would never have guessed ghost head. I thought water drops anthropomorphised.
I was going for candle flames. Like something to cover your candlesticks when not used but still look cute.

I'm also guessing the weird "fingers" are gooseneck squash. Because the other similar molds were pumpkins and strawberries, these might be a summer squash in the same family as courgette. Orrrrrr they're creepy sperms

If you ever want to feel better about Possums, seriously look up photos of American Opossums. They look like they just walked out of a knock-down, grind your face to the bar, wig yanking fight. They won, but not without physical and emotional scars. 😅
Bahahahha! I mean I love our possums, they have never really done anything to me! One of the locals likes to climb in our power line and rustle in my roof. I think people give them a harsh trot not admiring them as much as our other native species! I almost think it’s because they have similar characteristics to rodents and they get a terrible reputation!
Possums are rad. I have three that I raised from orphan babies. :3

I agree the teardrops are crookneck squash! However, I wondered if the "inappropriate" find of the title was going to be another pig in a position topping your first piggy! 🤣 That subject matter does exist, I've seen it like S&P shakers. The flower box I think is for a powder puff. If you ever find a mold that is a jar with a lady figure for a lid, that's for powder with a puff attached to the lid under her skirt!

I love the “smash or pass/cast” series and the “mystery moulds”. I love watching the reveals.
Possums in the US are a different animal than the ones in Australia and they have a WAY worse reputation than yours do. Simply because, to some eyes, they are horribly hideous. But they’re very interesting creatures. The only native North American marsupial, and all but completely immune to rabies. Remember NA brethren, possums are our friends

Yup! Both possums and opossums are are fascinating marsupials but they are quite different beasts! I guess many find the North American opossum ugly but to me they epitomise the saying "Small but fierce", so they are beautiful in their "ugliness". I sure wouldn't want to mess with one! 😂
Shelby, I know you had some little bees that you've attached to mugs before and I think they would just be soooo cute on the round box.

Would the possum sit on a wine bottle? That whole aesthetic was big 15ish years ago (go the bundy bear holding up the bottle)

A little mending kit is such a good gift for anyone moving from their childhood home for the first time. My dad gave me a tool box with the basics. :) I loved it. Perhaps because he had taught me how to use all the tools.

Those”inappropriate “ faces looked like gourds. If you are unaware, gourds are a plant native to the desert southwest region of the US. They were used extensively by the native people for food, storage containers and even art canvases. They were also used as musical instruments (think maracas).

For the first one you could do the pincushion on the bottom of the lid so it closes inside the jar! That way you don’t cover up the floral design. That last one looks more like a lemur to me than a possum. Its’ tail is thick like it would be fluffy.
Brushtail possums are super common around here, and their tails are floofy floofy 😁
Are you thinking about opossums? Australian possums have furred tails - in fact I think that this mould might be for a brush tail possum which have very fluffy tails.
It could also be a ring tail possom as they have a kinda smooth ring tail

Agreed. They reminded me of all of the other ghosts in the Casper cartoons. Casper was the only one with a rounded, spherical head.

The last one of the possum looks like the other part was the base as there is a mark that looks liek it's where the tail sits

The 4 heads are ghosts…they would actually have bottoms shaped like a ghostly body for each head.
You trim the round piece off the bottom of the heads, and once they are cleaned and fired, stained or glazed, you glue a cork into the head piece that fits down into the body piece
The first jar reminds me of 'Chantilly Lace' perfume talcum powder that was popular in the 70s and 80s...I rather love the shape myself! That cute pig could be used for bookends!

Yesss that’s what I meant by elemental characters, like it could be a lava blob? A gas blob? A fire blob!? So many elements kind of look blobby like that

14:53 They don't exist in the US. You're taking about Possums, we have Opossums (which people often call "possum"). Opposums look completely different, and the only thing the two have in common is that they're both marsupials, but opposums are the only marsupials native to North America. However, ours get a bad rap as well, especially since a lot of people think they carry rabies, which they don't. Raccons are significantly more dangerous and more of a pest than opposums, but since they're cuter, they get a pass. 😩

Yup. Attach a fabric bottom and hang and you have a Casper-esque decoration.
Possum in the US have longer noses/snouts and yes we know they are important but are still creepy when they hiss at you.
Opossum, the animal you're talking about is a Opossum, and while it's reputation is negative it is very unearned. They are actually very timid and intelligent animals.
When you crushed the little hobgoblins they looked so much more like “other” appendages than when they were whole 😂😂😂😂😂
Hi Shelby from NW Missouri USA. I use to paint pottery so I really enjoy watching you create such beautiful artwork. The round container would be lovely if you painted the flowers in faint colors then put an iridescent glaze over it.
If you put the pincushion on the bottom of the lid of the sewing kit, you could preserve the design on the lid.
I love that idea! It would make it easier to stack or place in tight areas

So great to see another video. The face ones I am pretty sure are small gourds. I live in farm country and they are used for decoration with the pumpkins. This mold was designed badly. I think it would have been much better without the faces. Love the box. The piggy is pure gold. Flying pig would be my first try. The possum looks as though it would have a log to attach it to in another mold. That possum does not look like an American one. If there is no mold to look like a log drift wood or petrified wood would make a great platform. Your face when you opened the face mold is a treasure. Keep up the good work. Your videos are the first ones I look for. The ceramic lady.

I love that you find out what the mould is when we do as we get your smile or curious face which is so good to watch. I am so glad you took my advice to let your staff pick the moulds and wash them xx🐝🐝
The "ghost heads" to me are rain drops and can go with a rainbow or clouds, can represent spring in a collection for the seasons.... Options are endless...

Looks like the tear drop heads should be on a candle body, make a nice beauty and the beast thing.
There are a few videos on making a pincushion on TH-cam. You can make a small pincushion that is daisy shape for the lid. If you place a magnet on the lid and a magnet on the bottom of the pincushion, you could remove the pincushion and put it somewhere else. Like on the side of your sewing machine. If you can find one of those metal slap on bracelets, you could then put the pincushion on that.
The Possum will look great sitting on a branch next to the trunk, making it seem like it's holding on to the tree.

They look like ghost heads! Happy Halloween 👻. Lol opossum in the US are not as cute as the ones in Australia. Even though they are harmless creatures. I appreciate your videos so much. Also the trinket box is very sweet.
You can slice holes in the lid of the "powder jar" to make it into a potpourri pot, an incense stick holder, a teapot warmer, storing garlic etc. Or cut out a small groove out of the side and lid for a spoon and it's a honey pot, sugar pot etc. Or use it as a sewing kit but with the pincushion on the inside. Super diverse and absolutely lovely!

I cant wait to see the little round box painted the way U will paint it. I see these with jewelry in them and the sewing box will be cute too ,so many ideas that U could do ,I know it'll be precious. Id definitely buy it for my jewelry ,like for what U take iff before your shower r for just a few things U wear alot ,many possibilities.
The weird shaped faces reminded me of old school ghost figures, but only the heads? Like maybe they were supposed to be attached to another mold? But I don't know lol I agree that they're cute faces and weird shapes!

I absolutely adore all of these molds. The ghost heads would be fun in white with pumpkins, witches hats, or Halloween candies scattered all over them. The possum has such a cute face. I picture seeing it holding onto a bottle. The trinket box has soooo many uses. And I LOVE the idea of using the pig as a lamp. Your reactions to seeing the different forms is so much fun to see.
The faces one reminded me of squashes. If they were decorated in squash colors (and even zucchini) I think they’d be cute for someone who enjoys gardening those veggies.

For the powder box, could you trim or sand the design off until it's just a smooth surface? That would seem to be more your vibe. I also know you had a video on making a mold, so maybe this would be a good example for that. I'm suggesting this because I truly ADORE the shape of the box, and feel it would be beautiful with your style of design on it. As another commenter said, you could add a little bee on top, or really, any of your minature pieces, and then match the body to the theme of the lid. Maybe a bee on top, with a honeycomb pattern and some painted florals and bees on the base. What about a tiny frog and a matching pond scene? A seashell and an ocean theme? As you can see, I'm extremely inspired by this piece. I hope you are too!!

The first one reminds me of a bath powder container.
The randomness of things getting smashed or not is half the fun. I love that we got a different result than the norm cuz it's usually 50/50. But having a full-on full-on smash or cast one would be fun. But I would enjoy it way more as a surprise for us all.
So maybe ask the assistants to surprise us all as they can decide if there will be probably cast again or out right smashes.

I used to have a little jar like that, it is a trinket jar i kept on my dressing table,but i kept cotton balls in it to take make up off at night.

Have you ever thought of taking pictures of the casts and attaching the pictures to the molds so it is easier to identify when you are searching?
The shape has no name but they look like gourds when you said pumpkin I thought you were getting it then you made a hard left back to confusion.
I think the possom sits on the bottom part base you had on the table! It has the same shaped hole and cut outs! It's a two part mold! :) The little faces I think was squash. Though someone mentioned you could put a mushroom hat on the top and make them something more appropriate! I thought they were weird halloween ghosts at first, but when you mentioned the pumpkins and the strawberries, I went straight to squash. Painted the right color, I doubt anyone would get the wrong idea. lol Yellow... lol

Hi Shelby - some real cuties in this episode - and how hilarious those funny little ghost goblin thingamajigs - I choked with laughter when you smashed them, then they looked a little like something that fell off the statue of David 😲😂🤣. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the little piggy and can just picture it with big colourful flowers on its butt, and maybe turned into a little plant pot. The little possum is also soo gorjuss ... we don't have them here in South Africa, but funnily enough we will call someone Possum as a term of endearment - he does look like he should be hanging onto the side of a nice gnarley branch or a lamp stand or a railing to a staircase or something (a pole dancing possum 😂😂) - I have no doubt you will come up with something wonderful - I am always amazed at how you come up with the most amazing ideas as soon as you have opened a mold
The pieces that you poured up this time is really cool the animals and the little trinket box are very nice and those water droplets. I would remove the face. It’s a little weird and make them look like the elements
