In the early 2000s, I bought a mug similar in size and shape of Mystery Mug 9. I use it as a meal mug for stew, soup, spaghetti, salad, etc. especially when it's a nice day and I can sit outside to eat my lunch. Being able to hold the mug while I eat eliminates balancing a bowl or plate on my lap. I also use it as a dip container for parties.

The one that has the rounded bottom and big sort of pedestal base (that you didn’t like!) reminds me of the sort of thing you might drink mulled wine or spiced cider out of. I can visualise it with bunches of grapes moulding attached to it, a sort of Bacchus vibe?

I can’t help but think that even with the pattern being a bit worn, the ‘tooled leather mug’ would still sell quite well with those who love shabby chic, especially if done in pastel coloured glazes or by steering into the worn look. Though as soon as you opened the mould I couldn’t help but think that it’d look perfect with just a plain white glaze.

I was wondering whether you could use some tools to emphasise the pattern a bit more?
By that I mean carve the background to create shadows and indent the curves of certain parts of the design to bring them out a bit more (much like a leatherworker would).
It takes longer, but the effect would be incredible and gives more scope for painting the design.

You may want to know that the design of the "leather" mug is an Anglo Saxon pattern that goes back to the 9th Century. I like the goblet being a Medieval reenactor. You could cut the handle off and make it a pure goblet. My daughter has Cerebral Palsy and as a result has problems with her hand grip. But she is able to use goblet glasses. She can grip the stem and have control of the cup. If you ever saw the movie The Jester you could make the Flagon with the Dragon and Chalice from the Palace. The little pig cups could be done with different breeds of pigs. I love the bull mug.

It also reminds me of a lot of the designs you would see on Western style things like clothing and accessories. The reason I say that is that my dad wore/had a lot of Western stuff and in particular a few pairs of leather cowboy boots and a silver cigarette case he had were similar to the designs on the mug iirc. I wonder if Western motif/fashion was inspired by the Anglo Saxon style patterns? :0

The dancing couple's mug looks so interesting to me! 😊 The horse equipment on the wall isn't a horse shoe but a shoulder/neck "girdle" to pull things, like a plow or other machinery for agriculture ((you put the horse's or ox's head through and rest it on their shoulders/base of the neck)). 😊

      @laughingcollie 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It's called a horse collar, actually, & if you look the term up on wikipedia, the very first photo looks much like what's on the mug. Oxen use yokes, but the design of a yoke would choke a horse. So the horse collar was a huge technological breakthrough once it was invented. Also, my guess is the dancing figures are one couple of a multiple-couple square dance! Square dancing is a TON of fun, and if you look up 'Modern Western Square Dance' on wikipedia you can find out more about it too. Cheers from California, and thanks so much for your videos, Shelby -- they're both relaxing to watch, and very artistically inspiring for me!

The American folk hero Paul Bunyan had a blue ox named Babe, which is what I thought of when I saw that bull mug! There's an old Disney short about Paul Bunyan and Babe that was one of my favorites as a kid. You could paint the bull mug in shades of blue as an unexpected design! I think a midnight blue version with gold luster stars on it would also be a super cool reference to the constellation Taurus as well!

The leather mug: Question/thoughts- 2-4 years ago you posted a video where you showed how to make your own mold. Is there any way you can:
    1. Take the leather mug when its still scrap-able and recarve out the hills and valleys that are getting too worn.
    2. Make a mold of the recarved mug. Is there a company out there that you can contact to help you professionally remold it or remold it yourself.

Just an idea: Maybe you could cast some for a special event item in your Pottage? Sell as a ticketed event - charge a good amount and do an appearance. People WILL pay for an event like this and include postage costs of having their finished fired piece sent to them.

I think the handle is supposed to be 'rustic' but I agree, I don't care for it either. The second cup that has the delicate shape reminds me of a tulip. Your idea of a garden cafe is spot on! That square dancing mug old look so neat if you could find some of those paper transfers that have plaid and paisley patterns… you could go ham decorating their clothes in a very traditional “Tex-Mex”/Americana Cowboy style. OR you could go off-book and lean into a more 1950’s poodle skirt retro jive-dancing aesthetic.
The second mug makes me think of tulips… painting leaves onto it and turning it into a tulip would be a very romantic look.

Also I don't know how practical it would be but it would be interesting to see the little Koala you attach to the thimbles attached to the handle of a mug. And for the tall mug with the pedestal foot I immediately thought of Rapunzel's tower. The handle reminded me of a viney branch climbing up the tower. On that note actually. Not this particular pedestal mug but a pedestal mug in general would be great for adding attachments around the pedestal (like the koala) so you get the fun detail of attachments without them getting in the way of your hands

The western theme with the man with the bandana or neckerchief, and the woman with a sort of square dance dress, are, as you figured out, at a barn dance! Western stuff was very trendy in the fifties and early sixties, so maybe the shape is mid century modern influenced. I can't think of any other reason for it to be so angular! The thing hanging on the barn wall is a horse collar, it goes around the horse's neck at shoulder level as part of a harness for heavy farm work or hauling heavy wagons. Red and other bright colours are a great choice!
Mug number 6 could be called Heart Handled Stacking Mug.
And finally, I think that the bull mug could be done in team colours from "Bull" sports teams.

I use those oversized mugs for cereal and ice cream. I live in an absurdly tiny place, so I often eat sitting on the ground with my food in my lap. So mugs are way easier than bowls to hold and not spill in that situation. The oversized ones tend to be shallower, too, so that helps with not having your knuckles clank against the rim (which I haaaate) when you're using a spoon to eat out of them.

The giant mug looks a lot like my favorite soup mug. They are so much nicer for heating up soup in the microwave than a regular bowl. I like when you have a little matching plate to hold a grilled cheese sandwich. The fairy teacup was my favorite (i hope it will have pretty pinks and greens) although the seventies leather design was gorgeous! The mug with the pedestal bottom actually looks very cool with the pedestal. It looks like something you'd use in a Renaissance Faire for the lords and ladies, or at a SCA event! The cow mug made me squeal. It has the cutest ears! Coloring it maybe to be like those really cute fluffy Scottish cows

The mug with the base is a hot chocolate mug that is like the one from the movie the Santa Claus and you should try changing the handle on the dancing mug to a wheel shape! I think that the footed mug is an Irish coffee mug. Since Irish coffee is supposed to be a lot of alcohol, it's why it's so small.
I love the huge mug. Was thinking of all of the little attachments that you could use. Flowers, leaves, butterflies, rainbows, clouds, little animals in the bottom. I purchased a very large mug years ago that says "I don't need therapy, I have cats." One of which is currently in my lap.

The dancers in the US are called “Square Dancers”. Often done at barn dances, but can also be done at a more professional level. My parents belonged to a Square Dance club when I was in High School, so I ended up taking the year of lessons and joined as well. Very geeky thing to do, but those of us kids who went around to dances with our parents had a blast together. My mom and I sewed all our own dresses or skirts with the fluffy crinolines underneath.

Mug 9 was made in the 90s, which is exactly when lattes in huge bowl-shaped mugs was a huge thing. We bought one for my dad for his morning coffee and he loved it - prior to owning it, he would prepare his coffee by mixing sugar and black coffee in a regular-sized 6oz mug 3x and pouring it into a small mixing bowl and drinking out of that, and finishing by savouring a fourth mug in the actual coffee cup. It was the weirdest ritual, but he just didn't want to stop and interrupt his coffee intake to make a new cup of coffee every time; a true coffee fiend. The latte cup solved all his morning coffee problems. 😂
