I heard Jesse Cox recently complaining that he wants to play rts games to see the big cool units blowing each other up, but he doesn't like how most matches only last long enough to use the most basic units. So this seems to be moving in the right direction for accessibility of new players.
I would argue that it's mostly because Blizzard's neglect of SC2. That opened the window for things like AoE4 and CoH3 to try to challenge it (even though they didn't exactly succeed in that regard) and no we are additionally seeing the wave of new games from Ex-Blizzard (Read: Ex-SC2) Developer teams that have been working on their own games since they left/were let go by Blizzard and are now ready to show their product to the world. The mostly failure of AoE4 and CoH3 to truly challenge SC2 in turn opened the opportunity for Indie teams to truly shine and challenge the big guys - think games like D.O.R.F., Manor Lords, Falling Frontier etc. Also at some point Homeworld 3 and SoaSE II joined the mix. TLDR: SC2 had to "die" for the RTS genre to be reinvigorated.
@@TerrannotOP I heard it's going more the WC3 route. I kinda lost interest when it was really slow and methodical play. I do kinda want a continuation of SC2. Moba-RTS vibes actually sound really cool to me! Watching the customizable decks makes me crave a roguelike single player mode where you can unlock wacky comps, synergies, and upgrades. This game feels like a genre-mix that could catch on with lots of people, even if they've never played an RTS!
god i want to play this so bad, i love sc2 but i dont wanna get back into it and learn a ton of build orders ect, this looks like it hits the perfect spot for me
This looks fun. The older I get, the less I want to invest in learning complex games. This looks like it would be easy to start playing without that investment. I'm looking forward to it.
This is the first game that's come along in recent times that's made me rethink the RTS genre as a whole. I'll be honest I thought RTS was dying at one point due to it being seen as niche with a core group of dedicated players but this kind of innovation could be just what it needs to appeal to the masses as well as provide a great challenge for RTS veterans alike. Definitely going to follow this one. Great vid! subbed
i wonder how it would be like if there was best of 3 each taking up 10 minutes and between rounds each player can change one card, but i guess then each game would be too long.
You probably found out by now but most people play like best of 5 or bo7 matches and they swap their decks in between. It doesn’t take long because the matches are usually over before 10 mins. Looks cool!
This is why i miss dawn of war 2, it didnt have base building but you got right into the action so fast. Plus it had 7 factions and the cover fire and destructible set pieces...so fun.
I guess the competitive format for this game would be a best of 5 or best of 6. I love the concept of this game, easy to get into, immediate action, lots of micro (my type). I like that I don't have to spend hours learning the game and practicing build orders like StarCraft. And the fact each match has a limit of 10 minutes, so even if I lose, I won't feel I wasted too much time and would be more willing to play again. This is already more appealing than Stormgate to me. I think if Riot Games made an RTS, it would be exactly like this, except each unit would have more personality.
I think what Starcraft II really excels at is that it has something kind of for everyone. It's great graphics (especially for when it released) and it still looks really good today as RTS doesn't really need high fidelity on things. The animations and fights are impactful and satisfying to watch. On the non-casual side, units are probably the most responsive out of any RTS on the market today, it's fast paced but strategy and build orders still play a huge role. The majority of players are casual (myself included for the most part) and they did amazing on the campaigns, AI and then even added in special progression and missions to comp stomps with the Co-op mode that can get very hard if you stack brutal modifiers. A lot of people just think of it as having pro appeal but honestly, Starcraft II has managed to appeal to both pro and casual crowds. The campaigns on top of having unique objectives, had very well done cutscenes and added in dialogue between missions that just fit in well and made you care more about the events going on (maybe overall story could be improved but still). When you really think about it, it's not that surprising SCII still remains near the top for RTS. It had a large amount of money and many years of well placed effort put into it and the only thing really aged on it could be the graphics yet the game really doesn't suffer because of that. I always end up coming back and replaying the campaigns at some point. Most the time it's after trying a newer RTS and wanting to play one, but just going back to "old faithful".
Agreed. Although I love watching SC2, I just don't have the will or time to actually play it 1v1. This? I could see it for sure. Get in, and blow some robots up for 10 minutes, no prolonged training necessary. Sure, I'll suck, but I can fight and win or lose and each game will cost me a maximum of 10 minutes.
I feel like a big problem here is that you can snowball quite fast. Once you have a big army in front of the enemys main base, you have won, since units come out 1by1 and you immediately win. Ifeel like having the ability to swap your unit spawn to eg the narural would be great to have some sort of comeback mechanic to quickly mass up some counter units and be able to finish of that enemy army in your main.
If you got the money you can spawn loads of units instantly, so that is not much of a problem! About spawning in the natural, agree that would be interesting but I guess they’re just going for the simplicity

I think this RTS very much caters to the casuals. I could never see myself getting into a game like SCII, but i could see myself playing this game. Easy to pick up with a nice learning curve. And its quick, so you can play a couple of games when you have a few minutes.
I generally agree especially looking at previous efforts but the fact a game of Battle Aces can be played within a 10 min session yet allow for high level play is going to be very appealing to a lot of people who normally wouldn't consider playing a traditional RTS game. I'm interested to see what the overall response will be to this game on release. As long as it doesn't have predatory monetisation I can see it doing very well indeed.

There's always room for new RTS's that fill different niches. You're right this isn't a good game for those looking for singleplayer campaigns or deep macro focused base builders. This is a fast paced focused RTS game for those who want to get straight to the action and I 100% think it has a place amongst a myriad of other RTS games. @@Ghostel3591 How do you know that though? they've been working on this game for years and I'm sure they have a roadmap planned for future content. I've been following all the other RTS in development and they do have some cool mechanics and unique features but they're following very closely the template that's been used since Starcraft first released. Many of them seem very generic to me personally. If you don't get the core game right, it doesn't matter how many bells and whistles you add to it, it'll always fail eventually. Battle Aces even in early access seems like a very polished game with a clear vision.
@@Corusame I repeat it is NOT about copying starcraft. It is about copying the variety of approach and giving community TOOLS to go wild. It can be the most amazing game, the real evolution of ideas from Footmen Frenzy/Desert Strike customer maps... There is literally another game that does similar thing already, really addictive and stuff - MECHABELLUM. I mean c'mon most of old RTS ran on "easy to learn, hard to master + go wild in campaign" for a reason.
@@Ghostel3591 Its true having a good campaign is a big selling point but in the long run especially with games like SC2 it is the multiplayer experience which has the longer lasting legs in my opinion. Saying that all this debate is pretty irrelevant, we won't know for sure until the game is out. I'm pretty hopeful these RTS vets didn't spend years creating something that's gonna die.
I think the next big RTS won't be StarCraft 3, but Warcraft 4. StarCraft 2 fills the niche so well it's near impossible to displace, and while I love Warcraft 3, it's far from perfect. It's a behemoth of an IP if Blizzard actually uses it, and still a nice change of setting if another developer makes a clone instead.
it's like Heroes of the Storm to League of Legends, Heroes was a faster paced game similar to League with more variants on completion criteria or side quest boosts you had to fight for to gain advantages, and League is a long drawn out build up just like Starcraft is. So you have your long haul strategy game and then you have the fast pace instant gratification games to appease the people with no patience for such things
It was 15 years ago, so market might have changed, but abandoning base building in Dawn of War 2 was the reason why community split and many original players disliked it even though game was good on its own, just different type focusing more on individual units/squads instead of classical RTS approach.
I call it a light rts, it has about half the amount of complexity of games like sc2 and aoe4 without taking away from the core idea of it being an rts.
I agree it could be seen as an RTS-lite game compared with traditional RTS but then the actual micro possible looks like it can allow for some high level play but in a much shorter session. Something I wouldn't have considered possible in the past. I'm excited to see how the RTS community as a whole reacts to this game on release.
I think if they keep this simple, throughout its lifespan, it'll be easiest to balance. If they keep the focus on simple mechanics, they'd also be able to avoid the pitfalls of greeding innovation and introducing unnecessary complications.
It's an interesting concept, but I also kind of hate it. The cut off features like building and extensive macro options and quick matches will no doubt be appealing to current generation of players, but I also dislike that there is almost no strategy and the ongoing trend of making things more and more braindead. Not that my opinion matters though, I don't play any RTS PvP, I just like to watch pros.
I'm still baffled by the fact that new rts devs keep saying how difficult rts' are and how diffcult it is to get into them, so they need to dumb it down so much, while pretty much every other competitive game that is very popular are faaaaaaaar more complex then sc2, just look at dota or league, they have so many heroes, items, weird mechanics and objectives that are toatlly unintuitive, yet both are far more popular then sc2. When i started dota 2 and watched some tourials and beginner guides, they usually were like 2-8 hours long. Yet dota has like a 10 times bigger playerbase, so how the hell does that make any sense? why is it that sc2 is small because its too difficult adn the barrier to entry is to big, while a game that has literally a 100 times bigger barrier to entry so much more popluar. David Kim is 10000% wrong on why rts' fail and that makes me belive that he will probably fail as well
Are ANY of these RTS games ever going to release? I swear to god I've heard of like 5 now and none of them are out. At best Early Access which is a scam.
These are the first games most of these studios have released. So they need several more years before we see a full release of any of them. I think the one that will release the soonest is Zerospace in early 2025
Dunno man - it's too intense of the game. When you get older you appreciate slower gameplay and some low intensity intervals during the match. And base building aspect is big part of rts fantasy too.
I think they still didnt implement it right. Making units is too fast and production is instant this will make it so 80% ofthe time youre just clicking unit creation rather than actually doing strategies.
Stormgate is the better traditional RTS no doubt. Battle Ace's is trying to tackle the holy grail of why RTS games are seen as a niche genre. If they pull it off it could get very big indeed. I'm excited to find out if they do.
this and a lot of other RTSs on the horizon look like a lot of fun, but is it just me, or do they all do a pretty mediocre job of voice lines? some of the units in this video sound really annoying.

The game looks interesting. I was honestly waiting for some kind of review from you, so thank you. My main concern is will we end up with just one universal good deck and then the meta in the game will die, huh?
Far from it in my opinion. It may not have base building or a lot of macro but your entire focus is going to be outplaying your opponent in the actual fun part of RTS games. The battles.

But if it will be an one trick pony - no roadmap will save it getting stale in the long run. Or seen as a sophisticated version of a mobile game.
Looks interesting. Thank you Lowko
I like that it has 10min timer, I hope it comes to mobile too.
it's like Heroes of the Storm to League of Legends, Heroes was a faster paced game similar to League with more variants on completion criteria or side quest boosts you had to fight for to gain advantages, and League is a long drawn out build up just like Starcraft is. So you have your long haul strategy game and then you have the fast pace instant gratification games to appease the people with no patience for such things
that ping sounded like it came from behind me
Seems somewhere between StarCraft and Clash Royale, it's definitely a more interesting and low-stress premise than all the StarCraft clones.
Can’t wait for new rts I love StarCraft but I like verity :)
I'd love a Battle Aces beta access 🤞
Clem's deck is IMBA xD
It was 15 years ago, so market might have changed, but abandoning base building in Dawn of War 2 was the reason why community split and many original players disliked it even though game was good on its own, just different type focusing more on individual units/squads instead of classical RTS approach.
Interesting content. Have you played Zerospace and Gates of Pyre too?
It looks interesting but I'm not sure about the no building part
Me too, I think it would be cool to add some macro back. A predetermined location for the base and one type of building looks too strange.
Anyone interested in Age of mythology : Retold
Age of Mythology is so underrated, but I've stopped being excited about Retold until it's finally out for real lol
This looks so cool!!
Make sure you are preninciating very clearly here Lowko!
Reminds me of marine arena
Also known as "Protoss vs Protoss Game" 👀
My biggest concern is the deck is going to be locked behind purchasing cards. micro transactions
Yea, I'm curious what the business model is.
Huh, neat. Wishlisted.
Footman Frenzy!
huh.. has the same feel of timing and time reservatin for me like Minion Masters.
I think if they keep this simple, throughout its lifespan, it'll be easiest to balance. If they keep the focus on simple mechanics, they'd also be able to avoid the pitfalls of greeding innovation and introducing unnecessary complications.
That seems to be the design focus for the game. Ease of access, simple to pick up and play but hard to master. I think its going to do really well
It's an interesting concept, but I also kind of hate it.
I'd buy this
fog of war is way too aggressive, i dont want to see it on my screen when units are just sitting there
Looks cool but I feel too zoomed in and the fog of war makes me a bit claustrophobic
devs: let's make it more casual friendly
people: this is a 'meh' casual game. will ditch it next week.
devs: :O
great game!
What happened to that other RTS that was supposed to replace Starcraft? What was its name again?
This game looks dope. Not a replacement for SC2 but and interesting RTS. Looks miles ahead of that trash "stormgate". Love it
This game is so simple it can run on a potato pc. This game is gonna hit
problem with this is i can't watch tourney games in x2 speed.
I like it!
Honestly this looks just like a mobile game like CnC rivals, but since everyone is a hypocrite no one is complaining about this.
SURELY there's a way to punish that instant-expand that everyone seems to be starting with. It's just bad design if there isn't.
I Cant believe what I'm seeing here.
I'm super excited for this game! Hopefully I won't be stuck in Wood league, like I was in SC2
Where do you get this game? Steam?
Basically a nexus wars with a timer?
I was really excited until you said there's no base building... what the crap, man... 😮💨
It's not RTS. It's Footman Frenzy custom map or something like that. Not really interesting, but will see.
David Kim is 10000% wrong on why rts' fail and that makes me belive that he will probably fail as well
I miss Art of War: Red Tides
why not atleast have some more basebuilding? for example so you can build turrets or something?
As far as I'm aware you can deploy turret units.
They're free to play and both this and stormgate are going to be available for everyone to play in like 2 months.
Way too much micro for me, it'll be fun to watch for sure tho
Dunno man - it's too intense of the game. When you get older you appreciate slower gameplay and some low intensity intervals during the match. And base building aspect is big part of rts fantasy too.
Netease tho so, why ?
campaign thou?
I think they still didnt implement it right.
Making units is too fast and production is instant this will make it so 80% ofthe time youre just clicking unit creation rather than actually doing strategies.
Clash Royale meets StarCraft
battle aces > stormgate?? lowko is this what u r saying? dont hope so cuz my hope for rts games is stormgate..
Stormgate is the better traditional RTS no doubt. Battle Ace's is trying to tackle the holy grail of why RTS games are seen as a niche genre. If they pull it off it could get very big indeed. I'm excited to find out if they do.
Ngl game does not feel like you’re fighting a war. Too cartoony and the music does not give off the war vibes
ugh casual monobatlles...
SECO D
this and a lot of other RTSs on the horizon look like a lot of fun, but is it just me, or do they all do a pretty mediocre job of voice lines? some of the units in this video sound really annoying.
"the more the merrier"
thas my boy!
why limit yourself to one rts game or one style of rts? ... it's always weird when people act like in the consolewarsdays all over again ..
😶🌫️
The game looks interesting. I was honestly waiting for some kind of review from you, so thank you. My main concern is will we end up with just one universal good deck and then the meta in the game will die, huh?
Meh, MP only, I guess.
Don't you have to label sponsored content?
Yes okay more other games. Sc2 is fun to watch more but without support it's a dead game.
no brain rts?
Far from it in my opinion. It may not have base building or a lot of macro but your entire focus is going to be outplaying your opponent in the actual fun part of RTS games. The battles.
david kim involved, thats all you need to know. What a horrible game designer
Stop pausing omg Lowko

Boring game
No base building, no workers, card decks, 10 minute game timer. This is a cheap MOBA, not an RTS. Looks like 💩
