I'm sure James LaBrie was playing basketball during the recording sessions, like 20 years before.

We''ll have to agree to disagree on that one. Untethered Angel sounds like A Change Of Seasons + Outcry to me. Pale Blue Dot sounds like Illumination Theory. And then we have the obligatory "sounds like Rush" song: Barstool Warrior. I couldn't get into this album on account of my personal beef with the band, lots of vocal processing, and things that reminded me too much of past albums.

@@theravenskillrebelmilitia139 I have my own thoughts on Distance over Time, but instead of saying Untethered Angel sounds like A Change of Seasons + Outcry, I would take notice how Untethered Angel has similarities with Haken, remember when you said the Brother Can you Hear Me motif sounds like Hemispheres? Well, with Untethered Angel, the songs Pareidolia at 3:43 and Nocturnal Conspiracy with the whole “I believe your conspiracy” part at 2:34 sound so similar, so I consider that the red flag of running out of creativity.

If I remember correctly, there was a video on the band’s Facebook that had someone (I think JP) say that everyone contributed to the songwriting. We know that this is true but James appears to be exaggerating the amount of work he put in on D/T. I’m also a huge DT fan but this album did have some major hits and misses. At best, the album is a nice release from the sour taste that was The Astonishing and I don’t mind hearing it all in one sitting. At worst, it does make me wish that some of the lyrics were far more grounded and not just word flexing (Untethered Angel, Fall into the Light,...)

Can't understand why JLB is still in DT. He just gave up being a true performer. Lip syncing is the final straw. As someone who regards A Dramatic Turn of Events, DT and The Astonishing, my 3 least favourite DT albums. I'd argue Distance Over Time was not only far better than all of them, but better than Black Clouds and Silver Linings, better than Systematic Chaos, better than Octavarium, better than their newest album A View From the Top of the World, and better than Train of Thought, possibly also better than Falling into Infinity, so I'd recommend giving it a fair shot. This album for me was a massive return to form and I'd give it an 8.5/10. I'd rank order the tracks from favourite to least favourite like this personally...
    1. Pale Blue Dot
    2. Room 137
    3. Barstool Warrior
    4. S2N
    5. At Wits End
    6. Paralyzed
    7. Out of Reach
    8. Viper King
    9. Fall Into the Light
    10. Untethered Angel
I'm more certain on the order for bottom five, but those top 5 I could see in any order, I change preference for them all the time because they're all genuinely great tunes.

From what I hear, it stems from Dream Theater's business contract. They all hold stock in the "company" in accordance with how long they've been in the band, and LaBrie would have to voluntarily sell his stock to leave, or something like that. Even then, the saying "where there's a will, there's a way" applies here. Petrucci could have found a way to get rid of LaBrie if he really wanted to. Kevin Moore violated his contract by leaving DT when he owed the record company several more albums.

I think that JP is doing everything to put James in front of the harsh reality (eg by organizing an unsustainable tour based on I&W, or by insisting on the formula "An evening with" based on 3-hours-gigs for 3 nights a week) in order to convince him to leave the band. Maybe Petrucci hopes that, sooner or later, James will say "I could stand anymore, i quit", finally leaving DT the chance to replace him with a better singer.
Why JP would do this? Because I am pretty sure that both him and the rest of the band are perfectly aware of James' conditions, but that they simply cannot fire him for contractual conditions (as TRRM said before) and even to prevent the fanboy audience from revolt against them. The only way out of this situation is to put James on the spot; if James quits, there will be no legal issue and nobody could say that the band fired him.
But I don't know if this would ever happen: JLB seems to live in a world of tantasy where he's still a good singer (do you remember his solo tour planned in 2018 and totally disappared?), he lacks the self-critical spirit, he rejects criticism, he continues to defend himself with the excuse "that night I was sick". Meanwhile, he keep forcing the band to use autotune on studio album and overdub vocal tracks on DVDs.
Furthermore, James knows very well that, if he'd leave the band, this could imply the immediate return of Mike Portnoy...and of course, he wouldn't allow this to happen, because we know that they hate each other.
