Hey guys, great vid. Sorry to hear about the batteries, we noticed a few of the sailing channels are converting to lithium. Something we are thinking about when we buy our boat in the next month. Keep the episodes coming, it's great to hear and see what life is actually like on the water :)

Loving this channel, I’m in freezing cold England dreaming of swimming & sailing in warm waters. Found you by chance after watching sailing videos in Greece as we are going sailing for the first time in August in the Ionians! Watched 35 of your Vlogs this week. Loving it & can’t wait to learn to sail. We will be doing a 2 week sailing course as a family of 4 plus my daughters boyfriend. Our Daughter is studying Marine Biology at Uni so I will share your channel with her. You are both amazing & can’t wait to find out how you got on as I’m sure you arrived home a long time ago and have had many more adventures since. We love Australia & have travelled there many times & wish we were there right now! Thanks for the sun, sand, jibs & jibes!! Love Jules 🌴😎⛵️
One battery going bad in six months could be a bad battery. Two or more going out at the same time is going to be under or over charging. The most common reasons for premature battery failure is undercharging, (followed by overcharging, which results in low water if not closely monitored). It’s easy to undercharge them on a sailboat. Even with solar, a few overcast days will put them pretty far in the hole. Start a log and check the voltages several times a day and read up on charging phases, ( bulk, absorption, float and the voltages that go with each phase). My wife always gets mad that I fill up our log with charge states, but knowledge is power with battery charging!
ralph holiman Spot on mate. I’m also surprised that they don’t have a targa in the back with 3 solar panels producing 900W in total. Those on the deck I guess are partly in shade. Depending how they are connected, they can loose a lot of power. If 1 panel is 20% in the shade, all the others will drop 20%. Laptops are huge consumers of power. And as you said, undercharged led-batteries dyes quickly. To Jayson I recommend to check how many Wh is consumed in 24h. Both on average, but also on “busy days”. Than check how much is actually produced. That is however not the entire truth as there are losses and led-batteries are not easy to fully charge. Cheers
When you buy, what is the point of warranty. Unless warranty is world wide, wouldn't it be better to get it cheaper because when you bought because you are not going turn around and sail back to claim. I do realise that it could have been failure to maintain this time but warranty costs are factored in to price.
wombatwal20 luckily the company (Exide) has a policy that if the country you’re in doesn’t stock their brand, you can buy whatever brand you like and they will still refund you. 🥳

Really enjoying the vids guy's, you probably have it sorted now but the easiest way I found to get my solar system working better was to have your solar regulator as close as possible to the batteries so that any volt drop your getting happens before the regulator then the batteries get a correct voltage charge, it makes a massive difference on battery capacity as even 1 volt less is around 50% of your batteries useable amp hour's😯 Cheers Daryl

Test all of your battery cables using a voltage drop test, you can do it with a simple multi-meter. Anything greater than 0.2VDC is a problem and the cable is likely corroded internally. The cables can look perfectly good on the outside and be a green corroded disaster inside. Hot cables are also a dead giveaway that they have too much resistance due to corrosion.
Sir Richard would agree. I'm reminded of fun banter at the lights when I'm driving my rag-top. The young fellas in adjacent cars, who always have cute girlfriends, tend to say, 'Nice car.' I say 'Thank you.' I might have caused a bit of fuss one time when, for a change, I said to a particularly cocky young guy, 'I'll swap my car for your girlfriend.' I had battery troubles one time and everything looked great for all connections but it turned out to be the battery cable. Peal back just a little plastic and you'll probably find corroded wires. Replace the battery cable or cables.

Another great video. I know it's a little off topic, but how do you like the Furlex furler. I am looking at that unit (actually, the 304) for my boat and I'm wondering how it has worked out for you. Have you had any trouble with it, and, if so, how was it to service? Thanks.
Jeff Griglack we did have trouble with it actually... See episode ‘Flying Solar Panels En Route to Morocco’ and ‘Unforgettable Moroccan Road Trip in Effort to Forget About Broken Rigging’. Other than that we’ve had no issue with it! Been working very well. A screw fell out without our knowing which was the source of our problem. Goes to show regular rig checks are so key.
Maybe its not the battery. You could have a short draining the battery or the charge circuit could be bad. Or you could simply be drawing too much. Hook an Amp meter in series to the battery while it is charged to see how much is going directly into it.
Hi guys, glad to be along☺️ Very strange the plastic palm trees, everybody to their own,but thumbs down there👎 Batteries 😩Batteries can behave in some strange ways,I wish I was closer to help you with those, one thing I'd be useful at.I guess your panels and inverter are fine, all this is hard to do remote control. You missed Sir Richard's second island in North Sound (Mosquito Island). You anchored right near it before going to the Chimney. I spent some time there in the 60's & 70's.
@@FindingAvalon My father, Bert Kilbride, owned Mosquito Island back in those days. He built a Scuba Resort, Drakes Anchorage. Do a Google search for Bert Kilbride and you will find some interesting stuff. They sold Mosquito in 1972 and bought Saba Rock and kept it until the 90's.
Batteries - don't ever use sealed/gel lead acid batteries, UNLESS you like buying new batteries in less than a year. Cheapest reasonable solution is flooded lead acid (think Trojans), will last an average of 2 years on a cruiser cycling them everyday. You MUST top off the batteries with water regularly, especially with a solar system that gets the batteries full every day. For those who want a combination of the ease of sealed and lifespan about equal to the Trojans, go with absorbed glass mat batteries (think Lifeline). More $, same lifespan but less maintenance. Best of the old generation are the expensive rolls-surrettes, can choose from the 4000 or 8000 cycle models, will give you 4-8 years if service, but still weigh a ton and have to water monthly. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are the current best, expect 10 years. BUT - not for people who don't know what they are doing. LiFePO4 charge profiles are very different from the other types, and the protective circuit board built into the batteries will blow when you try charging them with a regulator alternator or battery charger/solar charge controller without proper settings. Don't even think about installing them and firing up the engine to charge, the alternator will try to bring the batteries above the allowable voltage, the circuit board will cut out, leaving the alternator without a receptacle for the current it is producing, immediately blowing the alternator. You're left with rebuilding/buying a new alternator and shipping the lithium batteries back to the manufacturer to have the circuit boards replaced -NOT under warranty, they'll charge you extra for being dumb. I liveaboard (and have for the past 20 years). Just finished the revamp of my electrical system, thanks to Irma/Maria taking most of it away. Picked Renogy's LiFePO4 batteries, totalling 540Amp/hrs, giving a usable cycling amount of close to 400 Amp/hrs, 150% improvement over the previous batteries. Net gain? I replace 6oolbs of lead acid batteries (6 Rolls Surrette 6v) with three lithiums, weighing a total of 150lbs, so half the space requirement and only 1/4 the weight. Matched those with a high output alternator with a programmable voltage regulator with a charge profile matching the Renogy's. Also upgraded the solar panels, and bought new charge controllers (also by Renogy) with a charge profile specifically for their batteries. On the rare occasions I fire up the generator, the newer battery chargers also now have charge options for the lithium, make sure you program it! Granted the lithium batteries are dear in price, but remember how many times you'll change the other batteries in that time and work out the real cost over 10+ years, then add in the chiropractor visits for hauling the batteries out, getting them in the dinghy, and finding a place to get rid of them. Happy sailing!
The batteries they make these days are crap. I was told by the guy at the battery store that it's the lead they use in batteries now days. Also, battery shops these days use a new type of testing equipment that doesn't put the battery under enough load to properly test the battery. I had two batteries from my truck test good with the "new" type tester and fail miserably with the old fashion tester. Good luck and nice video, as usual.
Cheers, Fred. You made us blush there. Just by commenting you’re helping us get more subscribers, so thank you. And perhaps you could even share the vid with your pals... then it might really kick off. Lots of love Xanth & Jax
They are doing pretty good, they are only online for 10 months and 36 videos, this takes time, I think they will grow quite rapidly though as they do make great content and they just came up on my recommended feed, hit like and make comments really helps to promote the channel
As per other comments, if the batteries are okay, the problem could be that you’re not fully charging them. Or more likely, there’s something that continually draining them.... perhaps your hairdryer 😃😃 Hopefully by the time you’ve read this, everything has been sorted. Luving the vids!
What about “private” did you not understand? It’s amazing to me on how some cruisers don’t feel like respecting other’s properties don’t apply to them.
I didn't notice any disrespect. Was it a private sandbank? Ah, perhaps that's what the plastic palm trees were all about. Planting them means you've taken possession, or something like that. Still, didn't see any signs, saying, 'Private! Keep Off! Unless you're young and beautiful!', in which case J&A would've been just fine.
If Mr Branson did not want people on his island i am sure he would have signs up! They did no harm and Branson is a cool geezer and sure he wouldn’t mind so chill out and turn your nose down a little!
The charts show Necker Island as a private Island. Does a boat have signs saying that this is private property? Am I to assume that you're a cool guy; your boat doesn't have a sign that says keep out, so I should just go aboard and meander around? Charts, Cruiser guides, common sense....all part of the sailing experience.@@mrpanrucker3754
WTF, fake palm trees? Na mate, that's just not cricket! Just boil the kettle mate, let the water cool and top 'em up, all lead acid batteries, (even sealed ones) aren't maintenance free, and you should also not discharge them beyond around 40%
Trace Raley 😮 Fair enough; everyone’s ears are different I suppose. This no copyright music thing is awfully tricky. Probably nobody knows it, but we spend hours and hours searching for it. Glad you didn’t take back your thumbs up 😜

Wondering what type of battery you have, how are you charging them and do you have a battery monitor,

Great video. At one point I was wondering how long you could hold your breath.
We don’t really know either; we never time it! ...2-3 mins? Not heaps
@@FindingAvalon well world record is by 24 min and somthing seconds , but 2-3 min is really Damm Good !!!!
Did that wrecked boat have any battery's?
🤣
That would be batteries.
@@jamesbockenstette4332 I don't think you realize how possessive a battery can be.
Why I your subscriber total so low? You guys deserve way more. You make great original content. :(
Hope more people discover you soon.
You have a charging system issue with those batteries..or, most likely, they're just being run low and never fully recovering.
Seems to be the popular theory thus far 🧐
Fabulous attitude,lovely lady ✨ ⛵️ ⚓️ ✨ 🍷 ✨ 🏝 ✨
Ahh shucks. Thank you Richard. 🥰

G8t video as usual. When do you plan to make the Sth Pacific?
Likely to hit landfall there the last week of May!
Awesome guys..We are @ Raby Bay and heading north 01Jun so hope to catch up :)@@FindingAvalon
Peter Grimes awesome ❤️
As per other comments, if the batteries are okay, the problem could be that you’re not fully charging them. Or more likely, there’s something that continually draining them.... perhaps your hairdryer 😃😃 Hopefully by the time you’ve read this, everything has been sorted. Luving the vids!
That island needs plastic blow up dolls sitting under the plastic palm trees.
😂
LaGrande T Point taken but, no harm done :)
Really weird.
WTF, fake palm trees? Na mate, that's just not cricket! Just boil the kettle mate, let the water cool and top 'em up, all lead acid batteries, (even sealed ones) aren't maintenance free, and you should also not discharge them beyond around 40%
Here's my comment: would be epic if you cross paths with the crew on La Vagabonde
No..The Vagabonde is not real..this couple is ...and the girl hotter!
Hip hop sucks so much. I almost took back my 👍
Trace Raley 😮 Fair enough; everyone’s ears are different I suppose. This no copyright music thing is awfully tricky. Probably nobody knows it, but we spend hours and hours searching for it.
Glad you didn’t take back your thumbs up 😜
