    We can trust mother nature to remind us who is the boss out there... It often happens when we least expect it and have lowered our guard. It is humbling but you've done well, got your boat and crew back home safely. I have seen many of those white plastic tracks failing before, it's a weak point... Thanks for sharing with honesty this experience with us !

    In a cozy bay we had been tied alongside a fishing boat for 1 1/2 days. The rain had been constant and beer and food was getting low. With no radio or VHF -- at a time before mobiles existed (or weighed 2 bags of cement) -- I had no idea how long this weather would last. Even though I knew southerly gales in the Oslofjord never would be a breeze. But my new girlfriend (in the "we") had to get back to town and I said, "lets go". Wow, just out of the sheltered harbor the breaking seas and gusts hit us like a wall. It felt like a hurricane (though we never have hurricanes in our parts of the seas I could just imagine). It was obvious my small 20 footer wasn't built for this s...t. As soon as the cockpit became 1/2 full of water I made a quick return. Took us a minute and we were back along the fishing trawler.
    The lesson: always stay on shore when the fishermen prefer to stay snuggled up with their spouse, drink sooth black coffee and wait for sunnier days. And get a radio or whatever ....

    Great video! I've heard that you should always use two halyards when up in the mast, and that is what i am doing as well. Heard a few stories about sailiors falling from 15+ meters because of snapped halyards. Halyards, sheets etc. loses almost all their original strengt after being exposed to the elements for a certain time.

    Hi both - a nice video and some smiles. Looks like we can get to boats in the UK this week so highly motivated now to finish off my copper coat and get afloat. I noticed how close you guys are to Dangar Island. I watch (too much to be healthy) a channel called Dangar Marine. I reckon you would hoth like it although it does involve a large diesel.. and a coool boat dog called Eddie. Perhaps you could check out Dangar Stu there. Xanthe, Jackson I don't think you have anything to be ashamed , or guilty about, you were there, we were not, and as the stated goal was enjoyment you decide when to call a stop. We, or at least I, just enjoy watching you both having fun doing what you obviously love. Lets all hope for the end of the conditions that have bothered the world lately, so you and all other sailors can get out and sail. Take care and stay safe.

    It's all about leave options. Newer ever use the last option if you can. If one is smart, one quit no later than the third last option, and get safe with at least one option left. Too many has run out of options just due to target facination. You did the right thing, and just have em laugh. remember the last to laugh is the winner ;-) And by the way, the white swimsuit - it looks really nice.

    As always, a great video guys. Have had similar wind bullet beat me up just near Flint & Steele.
    Quick question: While you had the main up (12:24) I was looking at your lazy jack setup. Haven't seen that configuration before with a triangle outside of another triangle. It looks like it would reduce the opportunity when hoisting for a batten to snag compared to what I currently have (two triangles with a third triangle above). I have just ordered the line to redo my lazy jacks and now want to change it to that setup which you have.
    Is the aft line looped through the forward line and then back down to the centre triangle? Hard to tell from the image.

    • @FindingAvalon
      @FindingAvalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At least you got as far as Flint & Steel! Our system is a retractable lazy jack system, meaning you can pull them to the mast neatly, prior to hoisting or for long passages. And reducing it to no snagging, is much better then the original set up we had.

  • @vraymond108
    @vraymond108 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, don’t feel bad. Nobody’s hurt, the boat is OK. I am sure next day Jackson got the main all sorted. That is if he got out of bed -) No seriously, this is how we learn about sailing. We would have done the same thing or just revés up the motor. Why strain if you don’t have too?

    Xanthe, yip you were correct, although this is a comment made very much in jest😂😂
    You bloody softies, barely a toe rail buried, and most certainly not even close to a knockdown😂😂😂
    OK, if I'm honest I'm just jealous that you can still sail, it's been almost 6 weeks of total lockdown here in South Africa and I haven't set foot on a yacht since March 13, ironically after 110 miles of heavy weather sailing off Cape Town (48 maxing out at 54 true) on the nose, on a Lavranos L 34' (GREAT very seaworthy little boats, fast too!!) doing a RYA skipper practical, with seasick Steve and two other very inexperienced sailors. I must tell you guys that 30 knots is considered good sporting sailing off the southern coast of SA with max 1st reefs in the main and genoa, and when round the cans racing we fly the asymmetric on the downwind leg in 30 knots, we have been properly knocked down gybing the spinnaker before, 1st spreader, boom, all sails in the water, stbd beam up to the coach roof in the drink....much effing and blinding😂😂😂😂😂, twisted sheets, blown out genoa foot, etc etc, and a bit of radio banter from the rest of the fleet on 72, and many beers afterwards.
    Have a good one, stay safe and God bless you both
