You can do both in one circuit if you like

No, an LM338 is 5A. The lm337 is only rated to 1.5 Amps@@leopoldofernandezjr.508
Sorry, but you make a mistake. LM 337 TO220 package, datasheet :Maximum current output : 2.2 A, and that's the max value!
