YAESU FTDX10 vs KENWOOD TS-590SG-A Comparison-PART 1

- Someone asked me to give a comparison of the Yaesu FTDX10 and the Kenwood TS-590SG. So this is my personal opinion as an owner of both these radios. I could dive much deeper but these are my biggest likes and dislikes.
I discuss the rear panels, as well as front panel main control layout. I also discuss the bandstacking of the Kenwood. The Yaesu also does this, but its not so quick of a process.
I didn't realize the LED lights kind of wash out the radio displays. I'll try and improve on that in future videos.

Makes me sad that kenwood hadnt updated the 590. I love having all the buttons on the ftont instead of a touch screen with menus. But the dx10 is just better over all.
oh man, I know! The 590 just has everything right where you need it. I would LOVE to see an updated model.
Im assuming you figured out you can turn on the CW keyer to ON. If your in other modes. Like SSB and your CW key/s to key up and tune your amplifier or ATU.
I have the Yaesu but have found i don't have much use for the waterfall feature.
I can understand the feeling. I like being able to quickly see a station, or an empty spot, on a band. But I will often miss a weak station entirely if I only rely on the waterfall.

It's OPTIONAL to improve the frequency drift on the 590 in todays market? Insanity. I was getting quite interested in it until then. I'm currently looking for reasons to not get the FTDX10, but not finding any. Good overview of features and things to think about. Damn shame about the frequency drift of the 590 though - I saw it was quite bad in another video (100 Hz or more).
I totally agree. It should be standard equipment.
The DX10 is a pretty amazing radio. My Elmer just bought one and was shocked at how sensitive the receiver is, and how well it pulls in weak signals.
Wold be nice if you can do a comparison like this:
- Use external, equal loudspeaker, on each transceiver.
- Use a Antenna switch.
- Switch each 5 second, between A and B transceiver.
- Switch during the same station is talking.
- Use the same settings on each transceiver (BW, GAIN, FILTER...)
- Don't talk yourself during the test.
- Cut out in the video, for to search stations.

I have both (TS590S) and I love both - Kenwood build and ergonomics beat the FTdx10 hands down. Receiver and DNR on the Yaesu is in a league of its own. Would love to see Kenwood do more but Ham Radio is a limited global market. I'd really like the 890 and be happy with it as an ornament just to look at hi hi! 73 Mike
I agree Mike. Kenwood really nailed the ergonomics on the TS-590. I would also love to see Kenwood release more ham equipment. I see their new HT is coming soon but I’m more interested in the HF side of radio.

I have not been able to get used to it for 4 years of using the TS-590SG. and largely disagree with you.
very harsh audio that I couldn't stand.
as a result, I changed it to IC-7300 and now I am satisfied.
Now I am considering purchasing FTDX10 and your video is very useful for me.
95% QSO CW.

Thanks for watching. I haven’t had that issue with noticeably harsh audio. But I have used the 7300 quite a bit and it sounds fantastic. I see why it has a large following. It’s a great rig.
My gripes about the FTDX10 are likely largely based on my own preferences in transceivers. I do wish Yaesu would change a couple things but overall it’s a great performer. Which is why I can’t bring myself to part with it, even though I bought the 590 to replace it.
I really appreciate you sharing this comment, even as a disagreement. I enjoy discussing equipment and hearing everyone’s point of view.

now I have ft2k for home use, ft891 for summer cottage, ic7300 as backup and QCX for work /P.
now I'm thinking of buying ftdx10, comparing it with other transceivers and, as a result, selling something, and leaving something.
I will wait for the second, and maybe the third part of your review, where I hope you show in detail how ftdx10 CW works.

I’d like to see kenwood release a newer rig to compete with the dx10. They sure don’t make them out of cheap plastic like yaesu.
I’d love to see that. They did just release that new HT, so maybe there’s hope for HF too.
Nothing wrong with kenwood. Scope ok but old school its magical tuning up and down searching
