Kenwood TS-590SG vs TS-990S

Comparison between of two rigs in a very different price range. Both rigs are using same antenna, same settings and same speaker.
CW in the beginning, SSB towards the end.
This test was performed in ideal conditions. On a busy band with much QRM, the 990 shines. I love mine and love using it. Although I also like the 590SG, the actual user experience doesn't compare.

Have a 590sg more than enough for all my ham operating requirements. Rx performance doesn't make any big difference.

The TS-990S uses the TS-590SG for the sub receiver, I was told.

You buy the 990 for the bells and whistles, which is fun. More fun than the 590. The 590 is cheap but primitive.

The two radios use essentially the same receiver circuitry. The biggest difference between them is that in the 590, many of the configuration options are in menu. The 990 takes these config adjustments and puts them in a dial.
Many of the dials on the 990 have an corresponding version in the 590 menu.

According to Sherwood, the 590 is actually significantly better on 2k dynamic range.

@@johnarcher9480 Thanks John, I meanwhile bought a 590SG and I am indeed impressed ; moreover, it's NB is the best I've tried, and I have read other comments stating the same high performance of its NB. I can't say the same for its NR, but I rather use the RF Gain whenever possible and my own ears as "NR" filter ;)

@@26fb384 Depends on how selective a receiver you need. The 890 will remove a neighbor a block away, the 590 won't.

Thanks for taking the time to make this comparison, being a lifelong Trio/Kenwood fan any radio from them is good for me, the 590 is an excellent radio for the price, i compete in a lot of contests, i have finished with a good score just using an old Icom 706 Mk1 with a good cw filter and my OM Power amp, and simple dipole antennas in many European contests due to my new house and the lack of space Are.
My first Kenwood a TS2400 handheld when i had my NEW VHF license !!

No APF on the 590SG but you can go into the equalizer & accentuate the CW tone on it & put hte equalization as a User selection. Not as good as APF but a good 2nd choice.
