Getting started operating on HF digital modes- Fldigi and HRD DM-780

A few of us in my local club are interested in starting an HF digital net. In this video I go over some basic operations using Fldigi and Ham Radio Deluxe's Digital Master 780 (DM-780) software. I picked this radio up on a trade at a local hamfest last month. It's made by HF Signals (www.hfsignals.com). I've been a huge fan of their products since I bought their uBitx HF radio a few years ago. This one puts out about 40 watts on 80 thru 10 meters (somewhat less on the higher bands) and does pretty much every possible mode, all running from INSIDE the transceiver, thanks to the built-in...

Does anyone know a way to change the RTTY reception parameters? So far I haven't managed to decode RTTY weather reports from the German weather service - DDH9 on 11039 kHz - with the internal decoder. These are sent out at 50 baud and 450 Hz shift. I can change the value under MENU>SET>FUNCTION>RTTY Shift, but when I call up the decoder again, it is set back to 170 Hz. Does anyone have a tip for this?

RS batteries were relatively expensive back in the day compared to other brands but had a major advantage - leaks were virtually unheard of, especially with the green ones (the lower priced red ones weren't so well sealed but were still decent). That made them a safe, reliable choice for test equipment, meters, calculators, weather stations and anything else relatively expensive where the battery is likely to be in place for an extended period. The low chance of leakage easily justified the price.

I’m on the fence about getting one. The fact that the raspberry pi is integrated is really a neat feature. Have you looked into installing Vara AC HF? Just started with digital modes, so if the vara modem could be loaded that would sweeten the choice of buying the rig. Anyway, thanks for posting the video, 73 N3BIL

    • @Fireman9143

@propagating-radio I realized that the 25kHz calibration beat was accurate with the digital readout, so I took the vfo dial apart and shifted the plates to match the digital. It was a pain because the middle plate set screw is not easy to access. Best bet is to remove the whole thing, hook it up outside the case, and get all the numbers lined up. The hard part was getting the 5 in the exact right spot. The first time I did it, the numbers were just a bit off, and I spun up to 500 they were not in the middle of the window. When the big inner dial is adjusted to 0, set the middle dial so the 0 is in window of the outer dial with the 5 just to the right in the 9 window. Snug it up and spin it all the way around to 500. Make sure the numbers stay visible in the middle of the window. If they are a little left or right, adjust the middle dial slightly. Everything should be within 1kHz of the 25kHz cal beat as you go up and down. I did find 1 youtube video explaining this, though I learned the hard way about double checking the full scale is lined up.

Great video - thank you. I know this video is a year old but I'm trying to find out if the repeater settings are lost after updating the Main and DSP Firmware. I emailed Yaesu last week and they replied a factory reset is required after the updates and therefore previous repeater settings will be lost. Nowhere in the update docs does it say to do a factory reset, so I am questioning Yaesu's reply. Would rather not have to go through every setting page for 2 repeaters before the update gets done to them.

I presume it's a coupling capacitor, when I touch a certain inductor I see full 100w into the Brandon-load, but I'm not sure which coupling cap to replace. I mostly used the 180 through the shortened 11m 5/8 for 10m local traffic & QSOs, and I kept the Pro3 on the 40m/80m inv Vee. I don't have 50kw or a 130' high 12 element Yagi so I steer clear of 20m 😜 Have you any idea if there's a typical coupling capacitor I should begin with replacing? Thank you & 73

Thank you for this comprehensive comparison. I've been using the IC-7300 since 2016 and I also have the 590 SG in my shack but i never will give it away...

The 7300 is a fantastic radio too. Thanks for watching!

I love all three of my sBitxs, DE, V2, and V3. I keep waiting for software updates but they are few and far between, still I love it.

I’m really considering a second sBitx!

Looks to me like you need to do a software update.

I think this is the future of ham radios - having a PC within them - so that all digital modes can be run from the radio without and external computer. Logging into the radio is also very useful. The Xiegu X6100 has similar capabilities. Good to see Farhan following/setting the trend. This could be a great radio for FreeDV (HF digital voice) work. 73 Ed DD5LP.

Ed, I totally agree. I’ve had an X6100 and really enjoyed that radio as well. It’s going to be fun to see what the future brings in new radio innovations, hopefully more and more of this merging of radio and PC tech.

Is it v2 or v3? Did you tried CW?

This one is a V2. Even though I’m primarily a CW op I haven’t used it on CW yet. I’ve heard there can be a delay in the first transmitted letter so I’ll have to see what I can do with that.
