Whenever Mother Gothel shows Rapunzel any affection, she's actually showing it to her hair. Like kissing the top of her head.

Definitely helps that one of the lead artists is Glen Keane who was the lead character designer for Ariel, the Beast, Pocahontas, and Tarzan.

    • @FeatheredWingz
      @FeatheredWingz ปีที่แล้ว +12

That's cuz development started in 1995 ;) It took longer than usual to develop. Glen Keane (famous for being head animator on a main character like Ariel and the Beast in almost each renaissance film) was supposed to make his directorial debut with it. But they took almost 10 years nailing down the design direction & story plot /tone and then Keane eventually had to step down in the the last few years of development for health reasons. So, while he was the main director for many many years on Tangled, he was not credited as such, in the end. (He's since made his directorial debut with "Over the Moon" on netflix, tho)
Keane is apparently known as an "earnest" story-teller and rejected the cynic comedy prevalent in popular animated films of the 2000s; producers were all pushing to make it more like Shrek, for many animated films back then. So that's a large part of why it's comedy feels more removed from other films around that time, too.
He originally designed Rapunzel to look kind of like his own daughter, Claire, when she was 18. Since production took so long, Claire had got her foot in the door at Disney herself and she added a lot to Rapunzel's character herself (the whole tower mural is her work & she made a good chunk of the more famous concept art pieces of Rapunzel).
(Sorry, nerding out cuz I just bought the artbook lol)

I know that the key moments could've worked well as a movie, but the series is still a better way to keep the fandom invested and active. Also, I liked the unique art style and the 2D animation, which we wouldn't have gotten if they had made a movie instead.

A fun fact is that the lantern the King and Queen lifted into the air is seemingly the only one with their kingdom's symbol on it when comparing it to the others. Then later you see that same lantern floated right to Rapunzel and was saved from hitting the water by her. It did its job of bringing and finding the princess to bring her home.

When this film came out it was the most not just animated, but the most expensive film ever made (which has since been surpassed), but cost 260 million to make.
The voice of Hook Hand is Brad Garret who you can hear in other Disney Pixar films like Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life,
Ask any animator and they will tell you the hardest thing to animate is hair.
As a counterpart to the appealing and cute design of Rapunzel, the directors wanted to make Flynn Rider "the most handsome, most attractive male lead Disney has ever had." They held a large "Hot Man Meeting" where they gathered about 30 women from the studio and asked them what they considered attractive in a man. They brought in hundreds of images of their favourite male actors and celebrities, which were torn and pasted back again. After much deliberation, his look was eventually narrowed down to one concept drawing
One of the few Disney films where both parents are alive. Also there is an easter egg in the Snuggly Duckling n the rafters is Pinocchio.
There was a follow up tv series that follows adventures with Rapunzel and Eugene and in case you didn’t notice at the end Eugene says “after years of asking and asking” so it wasn’t one of those things where they became married immediately.
The music was done by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater who would do the music for the series as well and because of the show Alan Menken finally won an Emmy completing his Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony wins. This film was nominated for Best Animated Feature (lost to Toy Story 3), and was nominated for Best Original Song for I See the Light (which it didn’t win either).
-One thing I need to point out is Gothel never loved Rapunzel at all. She only used her for her magic power. It was all just an act to make Rapunzel stay there.
-The reason Donna Murphy’s singing is so great is because she has been on Broadway for a long time.

What I love most about this movie, besides the movie itself (my favorite Disney film). Is that so many scenes everyone, especially Rapunzel , the animators were very generous with "Micro expressions ". In the boat scene with the lanterns when first viewed by her she must go through 20 changes in about 10 seconds. From the direction of her eyes, head tilt, corners of her mouth, the small chest exhale. All imperceptibly change making her more real. As for the music? "I see the light" beats Aladdin's " A whole new world" as the best romantic song !

Nice how they kept the tears in with the original story - the witch cuts off rapunzel's hair and throws her out of the tower when she finds out about the prince (in Perrault's version it's because Rapunzel commented that she was much heavier than the prince, in Grimm's version she commented on how tight her dress was feeling, but in both Grimm and Perraults original version she was pregnant and ended up giving birth alone and just managing to keep herself and both her babies (twins, a boy and a girl) alive for two or three years singing by the roadside until the prince found them again), then uses the hair to trick the prince into climbing up the tower again and then to drop him from the window, causing him to fall into the rose bushes at the base of the tower and blind him so he's left wandering completely blind around the woods for two or three years, then he hears Rapunzel singing again and follows the sound of her voice, and then (I'm getting back to the main point finally) she cries and when her tears fall on his face they cure his blindness and restore his sight (or wash away the dried blood that had sealed his eyelids shut), so nice that they were able to bring the tears from the original story back.
Of course most pre-tangled storybook tellings of the story or tv movies about Rapunzel skip over the pregnancy - though they seem fine with talking about blindness though, which when you think about it is a bit odd.

Flynn Rider is definitely the best male lead of any Disney film, flawed and arrogant but also intuitive and empathetic. Also sick character design. It went through a ton of design changes and it took a “hot guy meeting” where all of the female employees at Disney picked images of the most attractive male features and then the team came up with this guy by polymerizing the top choices. He is also one of the older leads being in his mid 20s.

When Eugene shows her affection, he’s always trying to get it out of the way.

Nice quick addition - seeing Rapunzel reach for Gothel when she fell out of the tower, in spite of everything she's still the woman Rapunzel thought was her mother for her whole life so in spite of now knowing the truth she still loves her on some level and so instinctively reached out to try and help her.

The reason the film is called Tangled rather than Rapunzel is they wanted a title that would appeal to both boys and girls similar to what they would do later with Frozen.

This movie is one of my all time favourite disney movies, everything is just so well done in it, the plot, the characters, animal sidekicks, the music and actors. Plus one of the scariest villains, maybe because she is very realistic. And as a fun fact, Rapunzel’s tears healing Flynn is from the original fairy tale where the prince was pushed of the tower by the witch and tore his eyes out in a thorn bush. Later he was found by Rapunzel and her tears gave him his eyes and health back.

I have always thought that the lights that go on along the streets of the Castle look like Rapunzel's hair that slowly lights up, and I also think that they grow longer, not because it is possible to make them so long in 18 years, but because every time she uses her powers they grow a little

31:32 GAH! I just have to point out something here!
Mother Gothel only shows affection to Rapunzel's hair rather than to Rapunzel herself. She doesn't kiss Rapunzel's forehead, she kisses her hair. She doesn't embrace Rapunzel, she caresses her hair. She calls Rapunzel "flower" and belittles her every idea and gaslights her into being too afraid to leave the tower.
Flynn is annoyed by Rapunzel's innocence and wide-eyed enthusiasm at first, but he goes along with their deal. He DOES try to scare her away from their plan at the Snuggly Duckling. When she proves to be much braver and more resilient than he thinks, he grows to respect her. And while yes, he did try to flirt with her because he finds her beautiful, he realizes that's not going to get him anywhere. After she heals his hand, they bond and connect over their tragic backstories and he asks her why she's never tried to leave before if she could have with her hair. He realizes he's never stopped to connect with anyone and he's never been able to trust anyone before. She's only ever had one person she trusted, and now she's doubting everything that person ever told her.
Flynn starts to show genuine affection (not just flirting) for Rapunzel once he's fallen in love with her, after they've been friends/companions for a while.
And the first affectionate gesture he does is to push Rapunzel's hair AWAY from her face, so he can see her eyes better! Unlike Gothel, he's not focused on her hair or what it can do for him, but rather HER and her vibrant personality and their connection with each other!
Final note: The movie didn't finish with them immediately getting married. Yes, they're in love and in a relationship, but Flynn/Eugene says it took a long time of him asking her to marry him, and in the "Tangled Forever After" series, they had ups and downs in their dating life before they were married. The point is, they took time to get to know each other before their "happily ever after" wedding.

Damn, there would be so much to say about this movie. Wonderful animation, just the right balance of romance, humor, and very dark subjects, great, emotional songs, chilling, but "heck, it's scary how exactly these kinds of people actually exist in real life"-type of villain...just the whole package. Rapunzel and Eugene are one of my favorite Disney-couples and Pascal and Maximus are great examples of how sidekicks can be spectacular even though they wouldn't speak.
The realization-scene truly is very satisfying and I love the detail about the broken mirror, which gives the notion of broken illusion and also the foreshadowing about what is going to happen to Gothel. It is also both heartbreaking and realistic how Rapunzel instinctively leans towards Gothel in hopes to save her when she falls. "Yes, you lied to me and manipulated me for years. What you did to me was evil and cruel and it takes a long time for me to really get over it and forgive you. But you also were the person I knew the longest. I don't wish your death and I somehow hoped that things could eventually be... if not fine, then at least decent between us." She is a very strong, multilayered and great role model.
Thank you so much for your great reaction.

It was originally gonna be called Rapunzel.
But the Princess and the Frog, the animated movie Disney released before this, was 'lesser received' by audiences. They came to the conclusion that it was because of the title, labeling it as a 'girls film'.
And since Tangled took over 250 million dollars (I think) to make, they could not afford the film to fail. So to avoid the 'girls film' label making the movie less profit, they changed the title to a gender neutral sounding title, being Tangled.
That did get backlash by some people, saying it was doing a disservice to Rapunzel, the movie's star, but the defense was that Tangled was about more than just the princess, it was about the characters around her as well.

In the original story, after Rapunzel and the Prince were found together the witch(Mother Gothel) pushed the Prince out of the tower, he fell in a thorn bush and it blinded him. The Witch moved Rapunzel to a secret location and after searching for like a year or two he blindly found his way into a swamp(I think) and found her. Surprisingly she had two children (apparently they got busy in the tower) Rapunzel cried over his eyes after he collapsed from being so tired and her tears went into his eyes healing him of his blindness. So I like how they still left that in the story in a way. Her tears were magic.
I did an assignment on the Brothers Grimm in school and I wrote a short story about Rapunzel's children growing up and meeting the twin kids of Aurora/Sleeping Beauty(who btw was SA'ed while she was asleep, gave birth and one of the babies sucked out the thorn from her finger, which broke her curse and woke her up. The Prince came back to do it again and she was awake and had his kids. And they fell in love. I think she was like 15, (Disgusting) Anyways in my story their kids became best friends and helped little Red Riding Hood save her grandma from the big bad wolf. (I decided in my story that Hansel and Gretel were Rapunzel's Kids)
