Monsters Incorporated is the largest scare factory in the monster world, and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) is one of its top scarers. Sullivan is a huge, intimidating monster with blue fur, large purple spots and horns. His scare assistant, best friend and roommate is Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), a green, opinionated, feisty little one-eyed monster. Visiting from the human world is Boo (Mary Gibbs), a tiny girl who goes where no human has ever gone before.

Fun fact did you know that Billy Crystal has regretted for turning down the role for Buzz Lightyear year prior to the 1st Toy Story, so he accepted the role as Mike Wazowski for Monsters INC and we can say he did a great job voicing that beloved Pixar character.
I mean that's the history of Pixar, with each new movie they made there was some new advancement in 3D technology
Starting from the bare bones 1st Toy Story
Especially Sulley's fur, it's made up of over a million hairs and they all move like fur does in the real world

Fun fact: It normally took 11-12 hours to render a single frame of Sulley because he had 2,320,413 individually strands of hair.
That's still insane for 2001, especially considering their newer movies take significantly longer per frame depending on the shot. The Toy Story 4 antique shop scenes reportedly took up to about 48 hours *per frame* - which makes sense with all the clutter EVERYWHERE for light bouncing, not to mention all the glass items...

She has no real lines because nobody could get her to focus long enough to read them, so they just let her play in the studio while following her with a microphone.

Monsters Inc Facts:
1. Even though it is never said in the film Boo’s real name is Mary and the girl who played her has a youtube channel,
2. Because it was hard for the people to have the little girl that voiced Boo to sit still in the recording booth they would follow her as she went around the studio and recorded anything she said,
3. The name of the restaurant Harryhausens is a reference to the legendary stop motion animator and director Ray Harryhausen sho was most famous for bringing various monster creatures to life,
4. The main theme of the film is a battle of one we are still grappling with clean energy (laughter in the film), vs non renewables (screams) and they even say in the film how laughter is more powerful at producing energy than screams,
5. Similar to Atlantis the Lost Empire where James Garner voiced Rourke, the voice of Waternoose is voiced by a legend also from the same era James Coburn,
6. This film was part of the first year of Oscar nominations for Best Animated Film the other two nominees were Shrek and Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius, unfortunately it was Shrek that won,
7. The film did however win the Oscar for Best Original Song “If I didn’t Have You” which finally gave Randy Newman his Oscar win,

9. The other thing is there was a short film that was part of the home media release of the film called Mike’s New Car which won an Oscar for Best Animated Short,
10. Bob Peterson the PIXAR employee who did the voice of Mr. Ray in Finding Nemo films was also the voice of Roz in the Monsters Inc films,
11. The scene of Sully thinking Boo was being destroyed with the trash is actually a reference the Chuck Jones classic short that causes many to cry: Feed the Kitty.

Cute fact that will make Boo even cuter she was played by the three or four year old daughter of one of the producers and or writers her name is Mary Gibbs she could not stay in one place so they followed her around the building and recorded what ever she said hence the gibberish.
Interesting fact about the actress of Boo during her teenage years she diagnosed with scoliosis she fully recovered and today unlike many young actors she by the looks of it is actually doing great she is really into fitness, yoga, Weightlifting (not ifbb just a past time) and she became a model.
Went to high school with her and she is legitimately one of the nicest and most selfless people ive ever met. Incredibly down to earth and easy to get along with. Everyone called her Boo haha

Waternoose for me is the best plot twist of a Disney villain. Perhaps because he knows the correct order of motives and sincerely cared about the state of the company and was not afraid to change his principles for its good.
Around 2004, my sister had her first Halloween. My mom got her this little Generic Monster costume that almost made her look Identical to Boo, but my mom didn't know at the time. So, Halloween Night, people are Wowing at my sister being "Boo" when that wasn't the intention at all lol
In the prequel we can see that much of what Sulley became is due to Mike being there to motivate him and the great role he played in making him the best Scarer in Monster's Inc. He was always there for Sulley and got them through. He's not a bad friend or a traitor for choosing not to go with him when Sulley wanted to drag him to find Boo, even if it was necessary to do so because Boo was in danger. I mean, let's put ourselves in Mike's shoes, he lost his job, everything he fought for for years, and his girlfriend and also his home, they were thrown out for something that wasn't even his fault because Sulley involved him in all that without that he could avoid it. And yet Sulley not only expected him to follow him and continue to help him when they had lost everything, but he minimized how Mike felt. He was right not to accompany him and tell him to go alone. He didn't do it because he didn't care about Boo but because of Sulley's absolutely inconsiderate attitude towards him.
It really hurt him that nothing he cared about mattered to Sulley.
At the same time, Sulley was wrong to downplay Mike's feelings like that, but Mike still came back because nothing was more important than their friendship
Fun Fact: The restaurant Harryhausen’s is a reference to legendary special effects technician Ray Harryhausen who is known for his stop motion animation works on films like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, The Valley of Gwangi, Clash of the Titans etc.

Fun/adorable fact: the actress for Boo/Mary was so young she couldn't sit still for the recordings....so they just followed her around with the equipment. Also they wanted to do a sequel...but they couldn't think of anything that could top the ending

It wasn't just John Goodman (Sulley) and Billy Crystal (Mike) who did their voice acting together, Steve Buchemi (Randall) and Frank Oz (Fungus) did it too for their scenes togheter.
I am so jealous of this movie's comedic timing. The different forms that are all shades of pink is underrated in my opinion.
I like Randall as a villain and I like how he uses his camouflage as a part of his evil doing, it's like they didn't just use it as something that's just there they made him use it at appropriate time.
Time to watch Boo be the cutest kid ever 😊

It was cool the way Boo fought Randall to save Sulley
All those of Sulley keeping Boo safe and being a father figure is the cutest thing ever.
Even though Sulley isn’t actually a father, but him taking care of Boo, keeping her safe, and grew to love her like she was his own is what made him being a father to her. Sulley definitely has the trates of a good father. He’s one of my favorite Pixar dads.
John Goodman who voiced Sulley, has done a lot of father roles in his career, like I said, Sulley is my favorite father role John Goodman has done.
Pacha from The Emperor’s New Groove is my second favorite dad role Goodman has done.
Also, the scene where Boo finally overcomes her fear of Randall and attacks him and smacks him with a toy baseball bat was definitely the funniest fight scene of all animated fight scenes.
Given that this released in December of 2001, this was the movie America needed. We needed Pixar back then as we need them right now...full of laughs, heart, and has one of the best twist villains!
I will never EVER get tired of this movie! I think I should do an yearly rewatch of this masterpiece😂😂 Watching it with you Timothee was so memorable!!!

You know what's funny?
In every Pixar movie, there is a small Easter egg of previous Pixar movies. Perfect example when Boo was handing Sully her toys she gave him Jessie from Toy Story and Nemo from Finding Nemo
What is funny is the fact, " Finding Nemo " didn't exist yet.
You forgot the place where Randall is " banished " in the end what is the same we can see in " A bug's life " and during his préparation, there's the wallpaper of Andy's room

Fun fact: the garbage scene was based on a Looney Tunes reference "Feed the Kitty" where Sulley and Marc Anthony thought that Boo and Pussyfoot died, but they're glad to see them alive

There’s a theory floating around that Boo Is a super from the incredibles era. Cuase when the monsters go through the doors, they’re going through different time zones and time periods. That would also explain why Boo tends to teleport out of her room when sully turns around

It's funny that you mention how weird sulley would look shaved... That's literally how he was animated, because they couldn't render the fur in the animation program while working on it, only in the playback. And the fur adds a couple inches of bulk, so they had to keep that in mind while animating so that it would look right in the end.
And yeah, the artistry and worldbuilding and the main characters recording together is what I miss about old disney. It's not the same anymore. The world of any Disney movie now just begins and ends with what you see onscreen. There's not much to think and wonder about anymore. They're making movies for profit now, not entertainment. And after Moana basically just being an advertisement for their Oahu resort, whenever they DO make something beautiful and interesting, I'm just suspicious. What are they selling this time?

Mary gibb is boos full name, and the Nemo toy in boos room was a sneak peek to finding Nemo because that movie wasn’t released until 2 years later
I still remember seeing this movie in theaters.
When I first watched this film back in high school I really enjoyed it and had a lot of laughter; now when I have a 3 year old daughter who looks very much like Boo, that scene where Sully had to say goodbye to Boo just ripped my heart apart. Especially when Boo claimed down her bed and joyfully ran to the door but found it empty, that just made me cry like a baby.

In the prequel/sequel, Monsters University, Sulley says that he doesn’t need to know any kid's fears, so he just scares. Principal Hardscrabble replied with "In that case it would not make the kid scream, it would make it cry."
This is why Boo cried when Sulley scared her. Her monster was Randall, because she probably had a fear of snakes, which Randall resembles. This is also implied by the Monsters Inc commercial, that says every kid has a specific kind of monster to be scared of.
Boo's voice actor Mary Gibbs is quite adorable in her role. To use a boom mike around the studio because she couldn't sit still for a few minutes made it more creative behind the scenes just as much as what's shown onscreen.
Out of all the Pixar movies I love, Monsters Inc. Is the one that started my whole puppet group

Harryhausen is in reference to Ray Harryhausen (1920 to 2013) was one of pioneers of stop motion animation. His animation was used in classics such as Clash of the Titans (1981). Harryhausen influenced group of iconic filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
This movie is the definition of my childhood and never fails to make me cry again.
Probably one my favourite films
Don’t at me when I say this, but when it comes to Randall’s characterization, Monster’s University is a great set up to that. Randall was a nerd who wanted to be popular and after that, he continues to want to be top dog especially after losing the games. Perfect revenge story for Randall when it comes to Mike and Sully.
Yes, they completely retconned Mike and Sully’s friendship because the movie explicitly stated they knew each other since four years old, but if we saw a beginning scene where they were best friends at four and maybe during high school or at the end of it, they separated because they had different personalities and goals, Monsters Inc. would make more sense.
Love that pixar movies also have bloopers at the end bloopers for animated movies
I really miss those. I think they stopped after Toy Story 2? That's the last one I remember having bloopers. Buzz and Woody pranking each other, the villain in A Bug's Life being a drama queen. Mike saying 'Go throw up" instead of grow up. Good stuff.
The abominable snowman was voiced by John Ratzenberger who also the voice Hamm from Toy Story,The Underminer from Incredibles 1 and 2.Also he voiced Pixar characters in every Pixar films until 2020.

Sulley's reaction of what he think it's Boo going through the trash compactor, are borrowed from Marc-Anthony's reaction from the Chuck Jones cartoon Feed the Kitty, where he believes his kitten friend Pussyfoot has been baked into a batch of cookies by his mistress and he can only watch in horror through the window, fainting over an over again.
I swear nothin makes me laugh harder in this film when the one monster couldn't scare the kid and his partner said she wasn't scared of you, she was ONLY 6!!! I could've been died, i could've died!!😂😂

My favorite movie along with Shrek, Ice Age and other films of the early / mid-noughties. After TH-cam, it's hard to hear an intro without an earrape. Glad the movie won the Oscar for best song.

The way I see this movie is that
Monsters were once monsters,
But now they are the kids imaginary friend.
If you two haven't seen the Disney + series; Monsters At Work (going into its second series), it explains the reasons for the Snowman being outcast. The series takes place shortly after Monster's Inc goes into Laughter production. Both Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their roles

Fun fact: The Harryhausen's restaurant Mike and Sully were running from was originally going to be completely BLOWN UP. They changed it to a plasma dome because this movie was released around the year of the 9/11 terrorists attack.
I love this movie SO SO MUCH!! It was and still is my favorite Pixar film for all the reasons you both mentioned, the worldbuilding is amazing, the characters are memorable and have depth and layers, and the story itself is so compelling and creative 20 years later! I'm so happy to see you guys finally react to it, it just gives me a glimpse or how impactful this film was when it first came out back then.
Also fun fact, it's revealed in the sequel T.V. show that The Yeti was indeed banished because he found out about the Scream Extractor back when it was first being made. The show is called "Monsters at Work" and it's on Disney+, I highly recommend it if you like this film and MU!

Pixar films usually have a prop related to their next film that hasn’t released yet at the time. Finding Nemo was released 2 years after Monster’s Inc. So that Nemo toy we saw in Boo’s room was either just a prop that inspired their next film, or they were already working on it and wanted to give us a hint.

Did you know that in the sushi place "quarantining" scene where Boo scares everyone, it wasn't originally supposed to happen via a green force field but a fiery, red explosion that further justifies why Sulley and Mike are shocked by what happened? The reason it was cut was because of 9/11.

Fungus is voiced by Frank Oz, famous muppeteer and director, the guy behind Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam the Eagle, Grover, Bert, Cookie Monster and especially Yoda from the Star Wars franchise. He also appear in Inside Out as Dave the Guard, along with fellow Muppeteer Dave Goelz (who did and still does Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Beauguard, Zoot and the current voice of Figment at Joruney Through Your Imagination at Epcot).
This and Toy story have always been some of my fav pixar films animators have so much work to do its impressive

Monsters Inc is actually not in an alternate universe, it’s in the very far future. After humans returned to earth in WALL·E, the radiation on the planet transformed human and animal life into monsters (Onward is between that and Monsters). The doors are time travel devices to scare children in the past. And Boo went through a door years after the events of this movie to find Sully. But it sent her to Medieval Scotland, and she became a witch.
But hey, that’s just a theory!
this is my favourite Disney Pixar movie. Im 21 now but remember watching this as a kid and I low-key cry at the ending, its just so sad, Ive always wanted another movie showing their reunion.
I remember as a little kid I saw this back in theaters back and I was pretty scared by the movie itself, given what the opening presented. Now a days it's entertaining and charming with the humor and characters, and the world building is very interesting and fascinating with how the power works from human kids and how monsters are easily scared of humans which is hilarious.
I remember watching monsters University and thinking Monsters Inc was just a less well animated sequel😂
