- Small creeks can hold big steelhead long into spring! Here are 10 tips and tricks that all stream trout angler should know.
Finding a cold, spring fed creek with deep holes can mean good steelhead fishing for weeks after most anglers say they have all gone back to the lake. these fish stick around if the conditions are ideal and can be quite easy to hook. Landing these big fish in tight quarters is another story!
We recommend using at least 8lb line when fishing these log infested pools but after this day I may even try 10lb!

Great instruction there young fella! Looks like you need a late summer visit to clear out some of those logs. I’ve used “Mikes” pink salmon eggs with great success for domestic rainbow for years but they always swallow the hook, looking forward to utilizing the circle hooks in the future. Thanks for the tip!

Glad to see that i'm not the only one who uses circle hooks for trout! I mainly fish for conservation so circle hooks are key to prevent gut hooking, hence why they're my favourite when using live bait. The type of knot you use also plays a huge role when using circle hooks. I personally like to snell mine. Thanks for the upload, Jesse!

Love this vid!! I live in Erie, PA, and I love fishing its tribs. So do 7,000 other people. I don't care to drift fish shoulder to shoulder right on top of pools, so I always hit the small, gin clear creeks. There aren't many options when you have pools with completely still water and no room to throw a spoon or fly fish. I'm the only one at the local fishing shop buying worms during steelhead season, but I hammer them compared to the guys throwing egg sacks for 7 hours straight. It's always tough navigating those logs!! Sometimes I throw my rod to the bank if they're hung up and try to net them to save my hook.
This was awesome.😎 We have a similar river very close to home. I sort of...accidentally, discovered I could fish the small holes in it, similar to this, when my #3 splitshot was still too heavy to drift. It just sort of sank, with a tiny corkie and coon shrimp. It has proven fairly successful so far. It's great to see someone else successfully using this approach. Thank you for sharing. 😊

Three fish hooked, one landed , that’s not a bad ratio in my limited experience with Steelhead. Very cool little stream loaded with snags just waiting to mess you up but man those were some beauties in there. Lots of good pointers. Looking forward to the next one.

very good video. to me it is the main basics of fishing,butits a good reminder for me and a very educational video for ppl wanting to learn fishing and my girlfriend wants to go fishing this spring with me. so, we live in Canada and I am going to take her to Mill creek in Cambridge ON for brown trout which are stocked there and last year i caught my first brown which was about 12 inches by worm drifting into a pool. didnt see it. so very happy. good luck buddy!

Did you use circle hooks for a specific reason or you just wanted to try them out on trout fishing?

Thanks for your support! to answer your question, circle hooks are designed to not gut hook fish so I like to use them since a lot of trout tend to swallow the hook when you use worms as bait. I do keep some fish for the table every now and then but mostly release the majority of the fish I catch.

I laughed when you started talking about crawling up to spots - had this vision of you in full camo, face painted, chewing tobacco, climbing under brush to the Creek side with your monocular scouting for steelies. 😁

Caught 3 of them off the worm last weekend. Bead wasn't hitting for what ever reason. Slapped on the worm and pulled them up quick .

Tip#9999 replace cord on that net before you loose it. One way to do it is pop off the end cap in the handle and remove the bungee style cord and add your own. Use some good epoxy when you replace the cap. Tightlines

Definitely slowing down but there’s still a few kicking around in the northern headwaters.
I only got small ones the past week. Today was my last day, and I landed a small one and that's it. I'm sure there are some still around to catch if you really fish hard.
Time to move on to other things like pike and walleye 🔥

That's the only way I fish small creeks. I do use salted minnows as well. Biggest rainbow to date is 18lbs. Biggest brown is 8lbs.

Big dew worms have been really working where I fish this spring. I hooked a very nice bow on a big worm and she spit the hook after a long fight. That's the last good fish I hooked this spring. Tight lines.
Dang fish coming off the hook! So annoying!! Yeah Adam, dew worms are one of the best baits for sure! I think a lot of anglers over complicate things sometimes when the simple things work great

the tips i need but never seem to be available online is how to accurately find decent streams and creeks to fish. Like am i just supposed to be born into small fishing families and communities ? or like do i just drive around aimlessly without a destination and hope I randomly stumble upon creeks and rivers in the middle of the road ? like it would be so helpful if at least one of these videos would actually tell you how to find the fish, because i don't need to know how to catch them if i can't even find them first . Sadge fisherman always wanna make money fishing except for when it helps someone else have a good time fishing.
I find new creeks to fish all the time, no fishing family required. A little research and Google maps is all you need. Few trout fisherman will divulge their honey holes, too many get closed and posted as no trespassing when they become too popular. It often takes a lot of hard work and time finding these streams, and telling even a few (let alone all of TH-cam) the location would ruin that spot. I’ve seen that happen first hand on many of the streams I grew up fishing. One TH-cam video ruined the spot and the property was permanently closed. Many don’t realize that this is the reason these doors aren’t talked about, and the reality is good things aren’t given out easy you have to put in the work like everyone else.
My advice: If you look at Google maps and follow creeks up to the headwaters you can see they often fork out into many smaller fingers. Find a few that look decent and drive to the nearest road that crosses them. Be careful to avoid private property. Hope this helps. Tight lines

Ok now how do we deal with private property when it is literally hundreds of kilometres surrounding area is all private property. What is it on a google map search that tells you “hey this here isn’t private property this is a good place to start looking.”
@@averageontarioanglers another super annoying thing is when you ask for advice on how to find places to fish people act like you are asking for their honey holes… so you’re telling me the place you fish is the absolute only place too fish because you dont want to help me find my own fishing spot out of fear that i might find yours. Its just so sad. People love fishing but want to keep all the fish , water and nature to themselves.
@@averageontarioanglers i’ve spent years on googles maps, and crown land maps, and i just cant seem to see what it is that other anglers are seeing, because according to the maps online majority of the land for hundreds of kilometres surrounding me in all directions is private property and no one around wants to tell how to find fishing spots that aren’t private property, so essentially its a sport for guys who either know someone or were lucky enough to grow up in the bush.
That’s where the driving to the spots and looking for signs comes in.

Steelhead fishing is not a sport anymore it's a challenge with all the people especially on opener day it's pretty bad you got to get there early to hold your spot and guys still try to barge in and fish your spot the internet wrecked it all
