Voters in Iran elected Masoud Pezeshkian as president Saturday. The heart surgeon and former health minister defeated hard-liner Saeed Jalili in a runoff vote held just weeks after President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials died in a helicopter crash. Pezeshkian has criticized Iran's mandatory hijab law for women and has promised to disband Iran's morality police, as well as better relations with the United States and other Western countries in the hopes of lifting sanctions. Journalist Reza Sayah in Tehran says that while Pezeshkian spoke the language of the reformist movement, he also strived to show "he's not going to be a disruptive force to the establishment." We also speak with Persepolis author Marjane Satrapi, who says "elections in Iran are a farce" and that no candidate who reaches the presidency can really challenge the system. "The president does not change a lot."

Unless if Supreme Leader comes from Reformists.

A small part of people, especially young people, are also concerned about the freedom of hijab, but for other people, it is not very important and it is not one of the main priorities. The problem with the criticism of Iran, you need not to play into the western islamophobia and arabphobia. The issues that she is talking about are real. But to act like they exist because Iranian government and people did it to them selves is as islamophobic and arabphobic as it can get. Nothing is in a vacuum. What i see with this election is the willingness to change, the iranian people are very progressive in terms of the region. But also they know they don't live in vacuum and the west is trying to turn them into next Irap.

Abstract
Masoud Pezeshkian, a Turk originally from the city of Urmu (Urmia) in West Azerbaijan, is a candidate for the Iranian presidency. Born and educated in the city of Savucbulaq (Savujbulagh, later Mahabad), Azerbaijan due to his parents' employment and residence, he is fluent in the Mukriyani dialect of the Kurdish language and familiar with the Kurdish culture. The candidacy of Pezeshkian for the presidency, is significant not only for the general democratization of Iran but also for the Turkish nation living in Iran and the "Turkish National Cause".
In the contemporary history of Iran, Pezeshkian is the highest-ranking government official who has openly stated that he has a Turkish ethnic identity, is proud of being a Turk, and that Persian is not the mother tongue or the first language of Turks. By emphasizing his Turkish identity and expressing pride in being a Turk, Pezeshkian has delivered a historic and fatal blow to the official ideology of the modern state of Iran, as well as pan-Iranism and Azerbaijanism ideologies and their colonial nation building processes. For the past century, these ideologies have denied the existence of a distinct ethnic and national identity known as Turk in Iran, rejected the idea that Turkish is the mother tongue and primary language of Turks, and portrayed being a Turk as a shameful phenomenon.
When Pezeshkian was the deputy speaker of the parliament, he was involved in the establishment of the “Faction of Turkish-Populated Regions”. Following its formation, he assumed leadership of the Faction. This Faction, consisted of representatives of all Turks residing throughout Iran with various political leanings, solidified the national name and identity of "Turk" and strengthened the national unity of the Western Oghuz people living in Iran, transforming them into a single entity and a cohesive political force operating under the banner of “Turk”, which is independent and separate from Farsis (Persians) and Farsistan (Persia).
In this way, the independent Turkish ethnic-national factor reappeared in the political scene of Iran after the overthrow of the Turkish Qajar state. Over the past century, the Iranian state and Fars nationalists have been attempting to eliminate the "Turk" as an independent political factor and remove it from the Iranian political scene.
In his speeches, interviews, and debates, Pezeshkian has consistently advocated the rights of women, as well as national and religious groups and the transition towards the Eyalet system - a form of federalism. He has voiced strong opposition to institutionalized discrimination against national, ethnic and religious groups, as well as gender discrimination. He also opposes the official policy of Farsification imposed on non-Persian nations. Pezeshkian has condemned the linguistic and national genocide of Turks by the Iranian state, mockery and demeaning portrayal of Turks in publications and media. Pezeshkian has insisted on the necessity of providing education in the Turkish language for Turks and in the languages of other nations and minority groups, in schools. Additionally, he has stressed the significance of fostering friendly relations with Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
For these reasons, Pezeşkiyan's name is considered an important and positive figure in the national history of the Turks and the "Turkish National Struggle", even before being elected as President.
Good for this new leader… hopefully for the best for the women of the country!
I live in iran. And believe me big change is impossible in Islamic Republic. Iranian people don't like this dictatorship. Candidates are first approved by a council who is chosen by Supreme leader .
