I consolidated my collection a few years ago and it felt great. It was like a giant weight was lifted off my shoulders. Now when I look at my collection it’s just full off all the games I love.

First off, I am glad you either got your PC fixed or acquired a new one.
    My approach is to
    * Only keep games that I can be bothered to complete.
    * Play through at least 50% of the game's content before deciding not to finish it.
    * If I finish a game, I put the game on my game shelves.
    * If after a chunk of time-more than 2 weeks-I look at the game on my shelves and I do not feel any happiness or good memories, then I sell it.
    Marie Kondo style retro collecting.

I rarely downsize my collection. I just buy games I know I will play at some point. Even if that point is ten years down the road. LOL. In fact, the only time I ever sell a game is if I find another copy in better condition.

The older I get, the less stuff I want to own. I got rid of all my systems except for the PS2. Not only does the PS2 have great games of every genre, but there are also many compilations of older systems, arcade games, and pinball. Plus it plays PS1 games. The PS2 does everything I need on one magical console, and I don't have the clutter of all those other systems, controllers, accessories, games, and cables. There are more than enough PS1 and PS2 games to last my lifetime.

    • @RetroBirdGaming

I’ve been collecting comic books as well as games for a number of years, I will often sell an entire box of comics to get that one rare, expensive book. And lately I’ve been selling comics to fund my games, as both markets are incredibly hot right now. I don’t ever really consolidate my game collection tho, as I only ever buy stuff that I really like and plan to play many times

Old video but perfect timing for me. I'm in the process of "condensing" my collection as I like to call it to get rid of clutter, and have the ability to add things I'd like to have in the future. It's fun actuality, quite therapeutic actually. 💚🎮🕹

I'm strongly thinking of consolidating some of my collections right now. It's because of space and also why have something that I have really no emotional attachment to and no desire to play. It's a hard thing to do as a collector. I also agree with what you said about not having a lot of subscribers but having quality ones that's how I feel as well.

But really, being preventative moving forward is the best strategy. If you never own something, it's a lot easier to never miss it either. @@RetroCrisis

Glad to see you got this video up man! You must of got a new computer.
I built the majority of my collection by getting alot of large lots of games keeping what i want and selling the rest off to fund more lots or games i want. I have however sold rare games off to buy heavy titles. I sold my megaman x trilogy, EVO and casper for snes years ago to help fund my then incomplete gamecube collection. Honestly once i sold them ive never missed and them and have no desire to get them back.
    Great video as always man!

Haha and 3 of them are Zelda games! To be fair, I haven't combed through the 3DS library as many times as some of the others. I sell games when I no longer play them or I have obtained a superior or duplicate version of the same game. I often enjoy trying out super cheap games that are really no risk (under $5.00) and then sell them if I don't like them. Making space for new games is sometimes a factor, but I am mostly buying digital games for more modern systems. I do like having a more concise collection of games that I actually enjoy playing. I don't spend too much on classic games. If a classic game sells for more than $60, I just let it go.

This was also a great video!
I have my fav video game series. So my route for game collecting is the game series that I enjoy the most and feel attraction for
The next thing when I collect: I don't wanna buy those oldest consoles and collect for them no matter how much I love NES, SNES and Gameboy. So that's why I became so happy for the Classic Minis! The game collection in NES Classic Mini and SNES Classic Mini is so close to my personal favourite games. There's a few games that I don't care about and some games that I miss but overall - most games and the most important games are there.
Game series that I love to collect:
    Super Mario 2D/3D
    Mario Kart
    Zelda
    Sonic (2D)
    Metroid (not Metroid Prime!)
I already had Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 for Wii. So now when I bought 3D All-Stars for Switch I have two copies of Galaxy 1. But I like that I have the same game for both systems. Also got Skyward Sword for Wii and I probably gonna buy the Switch version.
3D All Stars again: I love that Super Mario 64 was included! I really wanted that game but I don't wanna get Nintendo 64. And I also love that Super Mario 64 is NOT widescreen so we still got the original aspect ratio from 1996! I have a feeling that 4:3 is better than 16:9 for that game. But for Sunshine it feels so right with 16:9 now. The original 4:3 feels a bit boring.
It's not many duplicates that I got. But I love the duplicates that I personally got.
This Super Mario Sunshine remake from 4:3 to 16:9 gave me the video idea to you: "Should 4:3 retro games get a 16:9 treatment?" Super Mario 3D All Stars is such a perfect example where we have SM64 that kept 4:3 and Sunshine got a 16:9 treatment.

My 2 main strategies have been these. First, let me preface this by saying my wife is a bit of a minimalist. She doesn’t collect things and doesn’t like having too much “stuff”. Translation: I don’t trust her to help me clean and organize because she seems to generate too many trash bags full of MY stuff. LOL! So my 2 main strategies have been to simply collect game ROMs for many games that I simply want to play. As far as collecting “hard copy” games, I limit it to handhelds like the GameBoy because the carts (and consoles) are so small. As it is, I have over 70 games for my handhelds and they take up about as much space as a couple of textbooks.
P.S. Another good (important?) idea is to inventory and catalog your games. Before doing that myself, I once bought a second copy of a game because I didn’t remember that I already had one. It wasn’t a cheap game either. I think I paid about $35 for it. After that, I kicked myself, and took the time to sit down and make a detailed list of my entire game inventory so I know what I have.

I've noticed it has become harder for me to justify my physical library as televisions have become more modern. I love Super Mario Galaxy 2, for example, but it looks like crap on the TV I have available to me. Ideally, every game in my collection would be accessible and easy to hook up and play any time in any circumstance. Some combination of physical and emulation is probably required.

A couple of things, not necessarily related to the topic of this video...
    1) I notice that you use Diddy Kong Racing music in a lot of your videos...GREAT game! That would probably fit into that “great games that need a remake” category that you talked about in another video. I love Mario Kart, but there is something special about DKR.
    2) In your short stack of Switch games, I noticed Snipper Clips. You must really like it, to have it in your small Switch collection. I haven’t played it. Is it a good co-op game that your wife can get into with you, or is it too difficult?
    Great video!

Here's my rule for collecting. 5-10 games per console. So the Non HD systems. HD systems, don't even bother collecting games for that as there is no monetary Value those games are basically 1 & done when you beat them. It's better to go digital with those HD games.
PS2: Just collect compilations for that system. I know Friday you'll mention these 3D games that were awesome at the time when this system was the standard. However now the 3D games are vastly Superior & those PS2 games play like trash. However the PS1 games have a style to them that it's not replicated. Like the Resident Evils 1-3, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, Fear Effect etc.

Yeah, usually you want to have games that are good, but there are some good reasons to have games that are bad.
For one, if it's part of a series you overall enjoy. I enjoy me some Final Fantasy...but Final Fantasy 2 (actual 2 BTW) is not good.
For another, some games are so bad that they have become infamous, so they can be an interesting thing to have in your collection, even if you don't actually enjoy them. They can also be played academically, where you're playing them so see why they're so bad, and to try and figure out how to make them better.
I like this topic BTW. It's nice to see someone showing that you don't _need_ to have a massive collection and that it's okay to let some of it go.
