Tremendous performance!!!! I have read the synopsis of this story and the origin of Nedda's infidelity was the fact that Canio (Pagliacci) adopted Nedda as an orphan, raised her in the circus troupe, her movements were under his absolute control, and made her his WIFE. I am not sure whether this indicates "pedophilia" but notice how his humorous personality on stage is masked by his distorted personality of paranoia, violence, possessiveness and jealousy and forbidding any man to come in contact with her. This could be the reason why Nedda had a Silvio as her confidante and that companionship lead to a risky romance. I am not condoning infidelity, but I am relating an insight of why the tendency for someone to be unfaithful develops. This opera and Carmen give meaningful lessons of what it means to be compassionate and faithful to your significant other. Never assume your "ideal" partner to be perfect and flawless for a lifetime.
Esto está filmado para televisión y entre el público de la escena aparece Herbert von Karajan. Qué pena la filmación, el canto no coincide con la boca de los cantantes. Pena que no sea en vivo. Vickers genial 😀!
@nevikmoore Silly comment. This was real trgedy, real art. The expression of the composer's tragic message of heartbreak, infidelity, jealousy treachery and finally the murderous ending in the hands of such artists as Karajan, Kabaivanska, Glossop and of course Vickers can't be found today. "Issues relating to women"--sheesh!
@@ezequielstepanenko3229 a definition of joke is to belittle Del Monaco 🤦♂️ Let's talk, for example, just about the language: the pronunciation is not convincing. The musicality of the language is extremely important. Let's talk about the voice: Del Monaco's vocal art is superior. If you talk about tastes, it's ok, "de gustibus non disputandum est". But the reality is just one. So, be objective, don't joke on 🤷♂️🤫 Adios 👋🍻
I had high expectations for Jon Vickers' performance of Canio but was greatly disappointed. His vocal line was quite measured and stoic until the very end, where he showed some emotions of jealousy and anger. His acting was also rather weak, showing little emotion especially in his face. Canio is heartbroken and betrayed as he confronts Nedda, but Vickers doesn't convince me of that. In my opinion, the very best Canio was performed by Franco Corelli in his film version. He is extremely convincing in this role and doesn't spare his voice in expressing his rage. When you watch his acting, he weds his words to his physical movements toward Nedda. I still get chills every time I view this video. Here is the link to his performance: th-cam.com/video/46AsxbF_U0c/w-d-xo.html

Jon sends shivers down my spine.
Bravo, Vickers!
Outstanding performance.
Thank you.

Insightful and illuminating. Thank you for this!
No, simplemente Nedda siguió sus instintos de tapu.
Supreme Canio for me! And Kabaivanska as Nedda and superb Rolando Panerai as Silvio! It can get any better!
Always loved Vickers!
He was GREAT
Legends, both🎉
Que triste historia... Gran interpretación...
I saw him as Peter Grimes. His acting was amazing and the voice was probably the most powerful I’ve heard and that includes James Morris.
Grande artisti. Grazie.
Qué rica voz tan pastosa!

Vickers!!! OMG!
Wow...
Sangueeeeeee!!!!! Excelentes!
An very touching version! Better then Caruso and all the others!
Excelente versión ..muy bien actuada y magistralmente interpretada. Solo Corelli y Domingo lo superan...
Solo Corelli, por favor.
nadie ha superado a Mario Del Monaco en Pagliacci
Dimentica Domingo
Canio at 3:55 makes me loose my bowels in fear... Silvio RUN AWAY!
Raina k
The best version of this aria !

von Karajan must have been inspired by Hitchcock, although the former appears at the end of the movie, the latter at the very opening.

You really dont have a clue if you think this is a poor performance
Del monaco was light years ahead of corelli, who couldnt act his way out of a paper bag
@crabbe88 My comment was not to be taken seriously. Just a small, small, small joke.
Blody good nearly as good as pavorties
No No No : Pavarotti isn't even in the same league as people like Vickers and Corelli.
A million times better than pav, this is verismo opera not bel canto,it needs a voice like vickers, del monaco,Corelli, tucker, etc
@@amantedellopera1681 Thank you for agreeing with me
Way way better than pav who didnt suit this role
Maybe. What the heck is she indicating by the distance between her forefingers at 3:34.

As an italian i must say it's quite annoying his pronunciation
P. Miss
No true Italian would bitch about the language when he makes such magnificent tenorial sounds
;)
@@jbell0243 Ok that's true, but pronunciation is important. Otherwise, you sing meaningless random words
Vickers canta bene ma non è ruolo per lui... comunque pronuncia magistrale
Sounds like someone's got issues relating to women.
