  • Karambi is this week's new coffee release and represents one of James’ favourite origin’s to roast and brew.
We’ve roasted the coffee in a way that was designed to bring out as much of the fruit character as possible, whilst still seeking balance in the cup. You’ll therefore be able to taste a bright pink grapefruit-like acidity and character along with a syrupy brown sugar and milk chocolate finish with a touch of ripe plum in their too.
We would say that Karambi is perfectly suited to filter brewing, but is versatile enough to run through your espresso machine. You may just need to increase your dilution ratio a touch to compensate for the acidity. Maybe start with a 1:2.5 ratio of dose to yield over 30 - 32 seconds.
If you want to learn a little more about how the coffee is roaster, head over to TH-cam to explore a video that James has made about this coffee. It’s something that we do on a weekly basis now so that you can have a greater insight into how your morning brew was produced.
Below are some notes on the farm from the importer of this coffee, Falcon Speciality:
Karambi was established in 2016 and RTC took ownership the following year. 4 staff are employed full time with the addition of 60 further staff during the harvest, of whom 90% are women. 1500 farmers contribute cherry to the station and all have successfully participated in RTC’s training program. Since 2017, annual production has doubled from 220 tons of cherry processed to an expected 400+ this year. At the time of Falcon’s visit at the end of May 2022, the station was on 292 tons processed. The farms surrounding Karambi are all within 3 kilometres of the station, located on steep slopes. On average farms are 4 hectare in size, with approximately 8000 trees per farm.
