    Yeah, here in Illinois I've had similar beetle issues. Mostly in June. Now that's its July not si much and our plants have blown up pretty good with the humid hot weather. Great update video, here in the southwest coast of British Columbia, Canada our garden is growing so fast compared to June. We are growing in mainly in pots and have had some problems with slugs and beetles early on, but now with the heat most of our pest problem has subsided. Last year we had about 50 pepper plants this year we said we would not have so many, so we have 75 this year haha, all in 5 gallon pots with a few in 5 gallon grow bags (we won't waste any peppers ill be giving them to family and coworkers if not made into sauce or preserved) our peppers ranging from no heat - very spicy and stand about 3 feet tall (some are a bit smaller) with lots of peppers starting to ripen. All of our peppers are grown with the information that I get from your videos, thank you for sharing your gardening knowledge and helping make people better gardeners

    Slugs are the curse where I live in Scandinavia. Slugs and garden snails. They haven't bothered my pepper plants much in previous years, so I wasn't prepared for the havoc they wreaked the first nights I left my plants out in May after a hot spell. After relocationg them the weather has been really up and down with daytime temps not reaching above 13-14C in much of june. They've somewhat recovered now, but growth has been really stunted and I fear several of my varieties wont even produce this year (namely Tianjin, Bird's eye and Tam Jalapeno - all of which have still to produce a single flower). But I'm glad to see your updates and to see there's hope even after serious attacks. Good luck and thanks for the inspiring videos.

    Have around 150 pepper plants this year in the southern Adirondacks, serrano, habanero, jalapeno, fresno, sugar rush and a selection of sweet peppers. Lost a few early on due to spider mites, but most of them have thrived and are now about 3 feet tall and loaded with peppers. Biggest issue I've had has been thunder storms, which have knocked most of them over; all staked now and hopefull they'll stay upright until fall!

    I'm in Georgia zone 8 and am just starting to see blossoms. except one of the Marconi's has fruits. I think it was too hot to bloom for a while.. 80s at night and triple digits in the afternoon.. it's calming down a little now.
    All of my peppers are in grow bags and I only planted red, yellow and orange ones so I can find them easily when they get ripe.
    I'm using grow bags because we get a lot of rain and I wanted the grow bag drainage.

    Hey Peppergeeks - Glad you published your progress. Please keep it up. This has been a strange season here in central MA too. This year I have 1 Bell, 4-5 Fresnos, 4 Jalapenos, 4 Poblanos and 3-4 Cayenne plants. Mostly all potted up on my deck. I states all of them n Mar 1st and with the help of grow lights, had 34 healthy plants to harden off. After giving some to neighbors (including grape and plum tomato plants) I ended with 22 plants -- 15 potted, and 7 put in the ground in the sunny areas of my shrubs near the driveway.
    Beatles have ravished the in-ground plants, but managed to eat one nice fresno pod from it. the other in-ground plants look like your worst beetle damaged ones. I went out at night and found 1 beetle...
    I did no pruning this year and All of the potted plants are 2 - 3 feet tall and fruiting mostly on top. Hardly any branching off the main stems until the top third. The deck faces south and is very sunny, but so HOT so I put my umbrella over them for the midday and afternoon shade. The pods are small so far 3-4" Jalapeno are the largest. Last year I had 4-5" pods - the heat wave was shorter last year I think.
    My tomatoes came under flea beetle attack early and neem oil spray as well as tomato/vegetable insect spray has been fairly effective, but is the heat causing the tall plants with top growth only?
    You guys are a terrific team. Thanks so much for sharing your progress.

I'm thinking I'm growing them too close together b/c the banana is the only one to fruit so far. The others have given flowers, but It's July 21.... and I'm looking for pods.... not just flowers. My jalapeño in a crowded grow bag had one pepper so far, and not that big. The plant is too small, and I hope since I removed the pepper it will grow larger and bear more.
    My Serrano is in same bag, and three times bigger. It has so far grown 4 small peppers, smaller than the store. But I removed 2 so that it can help the plant grow more.
    We had lots of 90+ degree days, and no wilting. I see tiny buds on Serrano so expect the 70s and 80s will improve it.
    I got okra, squash, melon, beans, cowpeas, passionflower, nasturtium, mini potato, and eggplant all in containers.

    We had a pretty sucky start to the growing season here in zone 8b due to an abnormally cool and rainy spring. I'd attempted to overwinter my peppers in our workshop 'greenhouse area', but only two survived. A red hot chili pepper plant, which now has about two dozen tiny green peppers on it, and a banana pepper, which has blossoms, but so far no fruit as of July 21.
    I'd started additional pepper seedlings early this year in my workshop greenhouse, as well as differing kinds of tomatos. The older established indeterminate tomatoes have been producing, and this year's potted determinate tomatos have a lot of blossoms, but thus far no fruit. Even the squash has been slow to produce fruit and start taking off in growth. Strawberries did well enough though.

    I was going to ask you about your Barbara's Antipodes on Reddit. It was the most difficult plant ever this year for me. 8-10 seeds I only had a single sprout. My first attempt I had 0. The second attempt, I soaked 4 seeds in water, and only one sprouted. My plant also hates the sun.
    I have some containers, and raised garden bed where I am transplanting some today/tomorrow. I had a VERY late start this year, I really don't even expect any harvest. My first frost is mid-October but last year my October had some temps to 78, 83, but then dropped significantly to 65 high temps.
    I wanted to start seeding in January but I thought it was too early, but back then I was excited about growing... and I knew if I didn't start in Jan, I was going to procrastinate.
    According to my calculations and AI, I should have at least a single harvest (might be small). Thankfully I have good fertilizer schedules that will get me a harvest. Last year my reapers were only slightly larger than my current plants at this time of the year.
    All my plants now are in small pots , but I have moving to raised garden bed and 6 gallon pots. Those that I moved so far have almost doubled in size in 2-3 days... so late start this year, I'm kind of kicking everything off at the end of summer (LOL!) but so far I have some flowers and they seem to grow really fast after transplant.

    The Japanese beetles showed up where I’m at around July first. They’ve mostly been going after our berry bushes (raspberries/currents) and Thai basils. Had to net the currents or we wouldn’t have a plant after a few days. I’d suggest having sacrificial Thai basil away from your peppers (and traps). You won’t get basil, but at least they’ll leave your peppers alone.

      @PepperGeek  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The white spots are the residual Kaolin Clay that we sprayed to protect the plants from beetle damage and the sun. Unfortunately, it needs to be re-applied after heavy rain (and it also doesn’t look pretty on the leaves 😂)

    I have one hot pepper - Chili peperoncini (seed from dried spice bought in grocery) , the rest are sweet peppers. Only Chili is attacked by beetles. Have they the tasty leaves?

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have noticed that some varieties are more attacked than others, so I’m sure this is the case. Sounds like you don’t have too large a population because eventually they will eat outside of their “preferred” plant

    Gosh, those Beatles been really doing a number on some of your plants. I don't think I've encountered any problems with Beatles just yet. I actually got really lucky this year, I have had no problems with any particular type of insect, not even aphids believe it or not. Somehow, from the time I raised all of my pepper plants from seed, to when I first put them outside up to this day, I have not seen a single aphid on any of my plants and every last one of my pepper plants still have many of their original leaves on them. There is some apparent damage on some leaves that is evident something was munching on them but I haven't found what it was but it is only minor insignificant damage. And I'm also already beginning to swim in peppers, my plants are bombarded with them right now LOL

My El Jefe jalapeno plants grew like weeds, performed very well. My Cayenne look like Trees, with insane amount of foliage like ive never seen before. My pepers do sooo much better in Buckets!

    Have you noticed if the kaolin clay has helped with ants and aphids? They have been my main problems this year. I wonder if that would be better than constantly setting traps and spraying soapy water. Thanks for the info as always!

    I got a touch sad when you started with your best plants, but my peppers are tracking with your unprotected peppers. Literally just picked some Green Poblano and Corno De Toro today so the season is progressing nicely.
    For the beetle damage plants (Earwigs in my case) what is the best protocol to get back to production? an extra dose of fertilizer or just ride it out and expect a smaller yield?

    I noticed one of your pepper looked like it had leaf spot. I've been panicking a bit about two of my pepper plants getting what looked like leaf spot. So far, most of the plant still looks healthy but there's no cure that I could find. What do you guys usually do? Do you rip them out or just let them grow out?

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Usually let them grow unless it seems to be spreading. In my experience diseases are very selective in which plants they will impact. For example, our sugar rushes always get leaf spot, but even plants right nearby (even touching) won’t be affected. Still wise to keep an eye out and avoid cross contamination, especially by pruning

    i dont know whats going on in my pepper garden. have stuff sowed april 7 and may 7, transplanted out to my raised beds after hardening off after about 6 weeks each starting indoors and every plant is only about 7" tall maximum. a couple are starting to push flowers and i dont really get why mine are so stunted and tiny. its like they havent grown, have amended soil, get liquid fert every 2-3 weeks and get watering every other day when its hot and every couple days when its cooler and less intense heat. has been a weird weather year: we didnt get any nighttime temps above 45F until like june 10th and im in zone 9a california. so strange i dont know why my stuff isnt growing

Transplanted from cups to 5 gallon buckets on April 28th. Plants are 2ft tall. Are there certain nutrients I should be feeding them to get them to flower vs growing just thick stems and leaves?
