Joe is only partially right. More established artists should be more active BUT... the majority of the blame for the system goes to some of the gatekeepers that Joe has been notoriously making excuses for over the past several years. Iovine, Diddy & yes, even Jay (just to name a few). They have real power to stop the system of exploitation but Joe often makes excuses for them.
When these issues come up because he, just like the artists he's criticizing is worried about upsetting his political connects.
Lets also realize that Joe is putting the majority of the responsibility on Black/hip-hop leaning artists. Country, Pop, Rock, etc have immense political clout as well. Ariana, Taylor, Ed Sheeran,Beiber, Coldplay? What about them? Artists like Drake & Future should be more vocal. Of course! But leave it to to Joe miss the mark and blame Hip Hop while also always giving a pass to the executives and the genres with the MOST power! Joe is having a very necessary conversation. But until all are held accountable, there's really no point.

      (1) your post is an emotional one, which overrides whatever logic you were attempting to use. (2) bringing up ed sheeran and other genres of music is a “whataboutism” argument - and a lazy one at that.

@ObiAmajoyiSrMD 🤣 you've got to be one of the most ignorant mfs whose ever used shown up in a comment section. Lol.. If you know anything about Labor movements and organization, you'd know that traction doesn't move forward without the powerplayers of an industry, regardless of their sector/division are the greatest agents of change. Furthermore, perhaps you have a problem with comprehension. Because even if you wanted to just limit this to a genre based fight, I specifically also mentioned that Joe routinely makes excuses for power brokers in hip-hop who have been accused of similar exploitation; like Puff, Tim & Iovine

Jay literally came up with a rival streaming service with higher payouts to artists and better quality sound and I remember people very vocally stating they were sticking with Apple/Spotify because of convenience. Artists took the big bag instead of making a stand. Those actors and writers are playing the long game and setting shit up for the future of their industry. Most big time musicians look at themselves as a lone entity/brand so its unlikely they care about where music is headed. Shit you see most of them are selling off their catalogs and getting out the game altogether.

This is mainly because as black people we are extremely short sided and selfish with each other. We love to use the term “competitiveness” or “competition” to justify some of our unwelcoming behavior. Especially us NY dudes. There’s absolutely no reason the rap game should be this far behind when it comes to music ownership. We have billionaires in the game who just keep repeating the cycle that they went through. It’s lame af. We have zero understanding of our fiscal power.

    • @willjamesjr

Ya'll gotta stop blaming Black people for the same ish white people do. These Pop and country mfs have waaaaaaay more political power and leverage than Hip hop artists. And guess what? The white pop & country artists are even more afraid to challenge the status quo than Black artists are.
They sign the same terrible contracts and you don't exactly see them on the front line either. The system needs to be revolutionized, but can we first stop blaming Black people as if white people aren't just as short sided and afraid as we are?

As a union organizer, I’d be interested to know what it would take to organize musicians. I really don’t fuck with the OGs who go through the bullshit then turn around and put younger artists through that same machine. Diddy and the likes are too thirsty to be a billionaire to stand in solidarity with up and coming artists.
As cynical as I am, I know you can make it happen starting with the artists who want to see change. People will follow if they see others standing up and if the majority is being screwed over then that gives reasons for them to join together.

I think in the rap industry the weakness is the competition of business between rappers.
If you want better deals for yourself and other artists
Guys who are established need to build brand new labels with other artist
Who are experienced in the game.
Change the script on contracts . Band together to make music outlets either pay or take your music off of there platforms and reconstruct what an artist gets.
This also goes for ghost writers. No more ghost writers. Everybody who is apart of the build of a song gets a cut and writers credit. There are lyrical geniuses and then there are people who are star quality . Not really great rappers but like an actor they have star power
    The labels in power now
You have to put them out of business.
You need people who care more about the culture than the money and build there success off others success
Get out of the rap beef game you don't hear about pop stars beefing focus the artist on the art
Now everyone can get a fair deal

They’re coming to law firms like the one I work at, begging for a way out of their contracts and I promise you, a lot of them are Hip Hop artists as well as Latino artists and it hurts my soul when I see this happen because as an artist myself, I can’t even fathom giving up the rights to my very well written and thought out artistic expression. • @Kxngarthxr28

I think the more the artist are bigger the reason why they're less active is because of they learned that there's other ways to make money. 50 Cent gave a perfect example in an interview. If you wanna be in the industry for money you gonna sign a deal. You in it for music you gonna sign a deal. When you realize its a business and you understand them loaning you money and not giving it to you then you'll understand you owe them money once you make the deal. To get paid you have earn it. Drake earned it. The big artist earned it. The little ppl in the game gotta figure it out.

I just watched an interview w/ Sha'Quille O'Neal and Monica Arnold and Sha'Quille stated that he earned $800,000 from one of his LPs and it wasn't enough. He was like, "Sh¡t, y'all don't make enough money for me." I thought that was so interesting. The money was obviously different back then (for some artists), but that figure really surprised me. Anyhow, if hip-hop is a male dominated sport, why aren't the males in hip-hop operating it? Nah, I done did some research and from the research I gathered, Joseph Anthony, a lot of artists are caught in a catch-22. If they sign to a label, 9 times outta 10, the label gon recoup everything. If they operate independently, 9 times outta 10, nobody's gon buy the music, much less hear it. I believe it truly depends on the artist. I've gone on record several times over the years stating that "streaming is dreaming." Think about it. Lil Nas X was able to garner 80 million streams off of _Old Town Road_ and you've never heard nobody play it in real life. There's a reason to that. Music is free nowadays and anything you give away for free will come back around and fuck you up. 15 years ago, it was so bad that artists were on record saying, "I'm putting out a free LP and if you wanna support, you can support." Fast forward to 2023 and this is the current climate.

Theres always a choice. Nipsey Hussle debunks all of those who feel they have to sign their value away. He walked away from Epic owning his masters when things didnt work out. He built his brand outside of the industry and created an infrastructure that wasn't dependent upon contracts. Even with Crenshaw he was able to do what we call in marketing qualitative and quantitative research. He charged $100 and was able to learn the demographics/psychographics of his consumers. He was able to have actual numbers to present his value. Even him not signing with MMG was a choice that debunks "Oh I gotta eat." He was still eating. Dj Envy spoke on Def Jam trying to sign him and he said no. Nipsey gave y'all the blueprint on truly being independent; and how you come back to the table with VALUE!!! You have to be comfortable tightening your belt and get creative with your resources. You dont have to just sign shitty deals.

Some workers in Hollywood are fighting for wages and better pay vs. established/well off writers are scared that the playing field will now be leveled and normal civilians will catch up to them with the help of ChatGPT. Poor ppl and Rich ppl are fighting 2 different battles under the “strike” umbrella.

The "convenience" argument is partially true. We can argue convenience for typewriters being replaced by computers and Final Draft software. Microwaves are convenient.
Certain things with AI will continue and they've been building for decades. They will pick and choose.
When it comes to AI in acting, the studios evidently proposed that they will scan the faces of supporting performers to use in future projects. They've been cloning faces since before the Matrix. It'll continue.

Parks is a little off on the AI part. I work with AI and in tech in general. AI isnt just remixing/sampling other peoples work like you would in music. They're training the AI models on the information, the AI model is understanding the patterns that make up the creative work, and then creating an original response based off of thousands of patterns to give a unique response. Its no different than an artist studying Marvin Gayes craft and making their own music, not necessarily sampling

    • @johnnyjohn6307
      @johnnyjohn6307 ปีที่แล้ว

The lawsuit is more about people saying they didnt consent to their work being used to train an AI model, not that there was any copyright infringement or anything of the sort going on. Most AI companies are very strict with blatant copyright infringement stuff

They will CONTROL US TO THE FULLEST!!! ALL IN THE NAME OF CONVENIENCE!!! 99% of the people trade the "tangible" dollar for debit, checking,& credit cards all cuz they thought it be more convenient 🤔🤨🤐i'm 52 yrs old & have NEVER had any of them & have done just fine w/o them all this time!!! But now thanks to EVERYBODY we almost HAVE TO conform because of it's mainstream but i refuse not to & will ride this til the wheels fall off & then i will trust in my LORD & SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST...
