I just ran up on a 2 year old video someone did on Buffalo Bore 9 mm + p + 150 grain out of a Smith & Wesson M&P with a 5 inch barrel. That stuff was going almost 1500 ft per second. One bullet actually went 1510 ft per second. I believe that would blow up my Ruger ec9s or my Max 9. I figured if I'm going to get something that hot I might as well get a 10 mm. One of one of these days. One of these days.

The choices get blurred, so I'm not going to fuss over anymore I will buy budget hollow points and nato fmj's for what ever I need them for. Love the show always learn something. paul harrel did a pretty good video about velocity being a key for bullet expansion. 185 grain give or take +p loading will be a good all rounder for 45acp. a 185 leave more room for powder and a higher speed. give it a +p loading and it starts shining really well.

The 9 is definitely cooking, wish it went a little deeper. They must of got the 45’s speed out of a carbine, out of a 5 inch nice expansion, again wish it went deeper. The extreme spread is concerning. Thanks for the test Tools!
When I first shot a 1911 years ago, I remember the instructor saying that if I couldn't do at least a commander sized 4.25 inch barrel, to not even worry about using jhps for defense and just go fmj. Bill Wilson told me 185 in anything below 4.25. Gil Terry used to SWC throat barrels for the local guys in the Officers Model and Zero loaded a soft shooting 185 SWC they used. I'm guessing maybe 700 fps out of 3.5". I miss the days when I could drop by with a 1000 cases for trade in and pick up 1000 rounds of .38 Special WC for $80. Zero was just the local guys then. Even then they did good work and I hit more empty shotgun hulls than I missed with my old 15-2 Dan Wesson. I very seldom payed for the Saturday Night Pizza.
My buddy loaded some of these for my .45 . I only shot steel but right under the target I found at least half of my shots taking in a perfect expansion. They were beautiful!

I don't know about this Atomic ammo. The quality control seems a little sketchy, and I don't like projectiles that only perform well in a narrow velocity range. Plus I prefer the 16-18” penetration depth. A projectile should do well in any commonly used barrel length, and over a wide range of velocities..**cough**HST**cough**
Im planning to use my bday savings online and saw the Atomic in a couple calibers. Plan on getting fmjs to try out the 692 so looking for 357/38/9mm. They did have all at RK yesterday but only 2 in 357 armscor & critical defense(2of each)...Good info as always!
I’m going outside to shoot some non atomic old 9mm range (“USMC range ammo “ /in brown cardboard boxs)I found Saturday while I was looking for some 20 ga dove bird shells I bought last year. Didn’t find what I was looking for but found a case of #6 steel shot in with the 9mm. & some other bulk 38,357 ect. Might be time to get a little more organized but was a good surprise find. Takem easy

Little Boy did pretty good if you like fragmentation. Fat Man did great! They both just needed a little longer barrels to work as needed. I just don't like these Barrys' hybrid rounds compared to the other option on the market.
Yeah, thats kinda what i suspected would happen with more velocity. The thing with the 45 is that the cartridge was developed specifically for a 5 inch barrel. Hollow point rounds also show that preference. Awesome video. Love the raw data

@ToolsandTargets The dance the blocks did when the .45 hit them was quite impressive, more than almost any test I've seen, with the exception of REAL 10mm (just watched it again).
Glad you got the 50rd box of the 45 so you could do this test without having to purchase another box. Very interesting results compared to the 3" barrels. I would buy this stuff IF it was comparable to FMJ in price and add it to my emergency stash, but thats it. Guess I'm even worse than you are, as I consider 16" the bare minimum for penetration, and much happier with 18-20".
I'm seeing an opportunity to specify ammo. Designed for subcompact, compact and full size. Because the 9mm was perfect in 3" barrel, where the 45 stunk.

Those extreme spreads, seem like quality control issues with powder charges. I just couldn't run something that inconsistent. I fear an extreme over pressure with something like that. I only have 9.5 fingers, I can't lose any more.
One of my hard rules is if an ammo company lies about their velocity or uses some crazy long barrel to achieve them, they instantly go on the "never buy" list. Welcome to the list Atomic.
@@TackJorrance I reload as well but I don't use my reloads in my SD guns because most experts recommend you don't. Would it actually hurt you in court? I don't know but when expert witnesses like Massad Ayoob who has been involved with countless court cases recommend you don't do it, I listen. Plus there are some really, really good SD ammo manufacturers out there and I don't shoot the expensive stuff other than making sure it runs in my guns reliably and accurately. Everything else I shoot are my own reloads. There are many manufacturers who give an accurate velocity on their boxes so I'm not agreeing with the 90% but I'll definitely believe 75% lol and that's way too many.

I'm concerned you've gotten too much Sun. When does increase velocity+greater expansion= enhanced penetration? I'm not familiar with that type of mathematics. Particularly not from something as light as a 9mm, but I can't think of an example in a rifle, either unless it fragments and the base penetrates further

The short barrel .45acp is definitely tricky to get a good hollow point for. Those Sierra I just tested did great out of a shorty.

The 9mm penetrating 12 inches is ok if you consider the king of the streets (125 grain.357 at 1,450) might get 9-11, inches

I'm concerned you've gotten too much Sun. When does increase velocity+greater expansion= enhanced penetration? I'm not familiar with that type of mathematics. Particularly not from something as light as a 9mm, but I can't think of an example in a rifle, either unless it fragments and the base penetrates further
