Lord Sumption is absolutely spot on in what he says. We, the people, need to take back our right to be responsible for our own lives, our right to live in community, and our right to have a true democracy running our nation. We pay the politicians' wages which makes them our servants.

I identify with the issue of fear. Courage remains a vital virtue which should be encouraged and honoured not least because there are other harms social in character which can harm society. Mafias are not prevented or limited by laws but by people.

@@francodenobili7654 I am not sure how to understand such a laconic comment. I am much more helped by articulated responses. Such a carefully articulated argument from Lord Sumption deserves reasoned criticism. My own view is that he is over pessimistic but the willingness of so many people to accept the government's right to control the activities of healthy people without setting our the alternatives and the arguments of those who thought the government's decision entirely outwith governmental competence struck me as alarming. It was not as if there were not medical objectors. the Great Barrington declaration should have been engaged with not simply omitted from mention. BTW I take it the sentence needed a question mark.

Jonathan Sumption and Thomas Sowell. One British, one American. They have extraordinary and clear minds and both are exceptionally brave. They challenge the powerful elites in their respective countries, and using only their intellect and their humanity are able to expose the shallow and crude lust for power among those who seek election. high office, and power over us. Both are despised and feared by the elites, but loved by ordinary people needing explanations for our current travails. Neither advance solutions, but I hope they both continue to apply their great minds to identifying the forces at work that are undermining Western democracy. Thank you Lord Sumption, thank you Professor Sowell!

He mentioned every single issue that has crossed my mind over the past two years, only in a more eloquent fashion. It has been a very dark episode that I am now still processing. I am not and have never been frightened of catching a virus but I still feel the after effects of lockdown and I fear a repeat performance. I have a healthy adult autistic son and his life was turned upside down by lockdown. His anxieties went off the scale hence his challenging behaviour (that had settled into early adulthood) returned. His social life ended overnight and his support network failed for 18months.
I had never suffered from mental problems but, throughout lockdown, my mind went to some very dark places. I can remember actually thinking it might be best not to wake up in the morning because there was nothing to wake up for.
Only now do I feel as though I am starting to mend. I have so much anger inside but nowhere to put it (if that makes sense). Just trying to look ahead.

I am a doctor from Spain. We had no long lockdowns here, neither mandates whatsoever.
But in february 2022 I needed psychiatric help.
I had spent 14 months trying to reason science with my doctor colleagues, to no avail. I have never been afraid of the virus and I am now 56. I was afraid of the totalitarian path we are treading down. And the acritucal acceptance of the educated population.
I also thought back then that I'd rather died from the covid I got in 2020 than waking up to the dystopia every morning. I sometimes still want to end this nightmare

I stumbled live, three or so years ago in the middle of the night listening to the BBC, upon one of Lord Sumption's Reith lectures. He was warning of the dangers of authoritarian and expansive European and EU international courts, of which there are at least two primary active bodies in Europe. I was spellbound. A man of superb education, both wise and intelligent, which are related but distinct characteristics of mind that often do not converge. (Silicon Valley provides many examples of extremely intelligent men without wisdom. Likewise, wisdom comes to some unaccompanied by bristling intelligence. George Washington might be a good historical example although we can all recognize the character of wisdom in "ordinary" men whom we are privileged to encounter in our personal lives. Lord Sumption has it all.)
I don't know why this man -- almost unheard of in mainstream American culture -- is not constantly quoted and referenced in places like National Review that seek to advance a sophisticated, thoughtful conservatism. He is a British treasure who should be celebrated and attended to everywhere that Western culture is honored and defended.

Throughout these past few years it dawned on me how odd to think most of my fellow citizens actually believed their government could, or even had the power to, protect the masses from an airborne virus. This was the main underlying, yet unspoken presumption most people had assumed. It took my a while to figure this out simply because it was unspoken, and also that it was such a foreign concept to my way of thinking.

As kids in the 50s and 60s we were routinely put out to play with very few boundaries, maybe; “comeback when it gets dark and don’t cross the big road”. We grew up confident we could handle whatever came our way.
Since the 80s kids were brought up in cotton wool afraid of ‘stranger danger’ and other terrible, unseen perils. They’ve grown up to the mantra; “Keep me safe! Keep me safe!” Hence masks, lockdowns, testing for a disease without symptoms, queues for vaccines etc …

We, the citizens of this country, had no say in the powers that were seized by our State Govts. in the face of a 'plandemic'. Our politicians failed us, the judiciary failed us, the Police failed us, our constitutional rights were ignored, as power hungry leftist Govts. experimented with just how far they could push a compliant populace. Australians rarely resort to violence because it is not our way of resolving differences, but by golly the Victorian Police were brutal toward us. All common decency was sacrificed by Dan Andrews' Jack boot militia, posing as Victorian Police officers. Eureka stockade, anyone? God help us. If Victorians re-elect this Govt. they deserve what's coming to them. 😥

Well said. The last two years were a reminder how quickly free countries can slide into autocracy. The scary thing was how easily this was achievable even in stable and healthy democracies and how many thought it would be a good idea to bypass basic principles and ignore concerns about future consequences. The mechanisms are similar in every historical case when countries lost their way. Fear is one of them, economic downturns is an other. We still have to pay for a long time to cope with the wrecking done during the last two years.

It's a sorry state of affairs when a layman like me has a firmer grasp of the law than a former Supreme Court judge. Being threatened with the loss of liberty for exercising one's right not to take an experimental vaccine is coercion. Under the Nuremberg Code it is a crime.. So this man threw the unvaccinated under a bus the moment he had guaranteed his own freedoms. I will never, ever forget that. This was actually one of the main points i learned and which separated people in the covid response. Not many people have true courage and it surprised me. Surprised myself, too.
Intellect and courage were especially highlighted when we saw all these 'experts' in their perceived omniscient hubris, proclaim all these terribly wrong and completely irrational "facts" of science . And the brave doctors who spoke up, were silenced by the cowards.
It had become clear, these were supposed to be the experts, these were supposed to be the intellectuals who apparently knew better than us. Appointed by who? It has become clear that intelligence as the IQ measure is not enough, it is not enough. Without courage it is a meaningless endeavour. Courage assists greatly in asking questions, alternative avenues than the prescribed doctrine, especially those relating to morality and human decency. All they did ( the cowardly intellect) was read a textbook, and come to believe that they must believe this , it MUST be true ,otherwise their studies and hubritic view would be completely devimated amd proven to be false, therefore making them and everything they were assigned to be an 'expert' on to be wrong.

I never supported the lockdowns , ever. Its strange that I find myself agreeing only with people who would be considered typically conservative (apart fom russel brand) because thats never been how I would define myself. Howeber, I am a student of history and I am definitely against central planning/marxism in the same way I am against facism as ironically both those extremes appear to havs a similar result, massive harm to the people. The only place might disagree would be in regards to the regulation of certain industries such as health, education, prisons etc because I do not think that this is always best left to for profit companies. I come from a very working class background, my mum was a primary school teacher and she raised me on her own with no other family support. However that was possible at the time because she worked most of the time and when she couldn't the amount of she recieved from the government could cover basic amenities (such as housing etc.. I note this is not the case anymore unfortunately, not even for people on lower wages) I think that people are so afraid of being arrested that they didn't rock the boat. Also the nudge units and biased media hasn't helped.

Many people on Oz protested. Few wanted lockdown. This positive spin on people supporting the lockdown is not true, they were supported for a initial period, so as to provide authorities enough time to prepare, but it went on far longer that was needed, it destroyed people's faith, trust, and was incredibly divisive and produced hate and labelled people in 2 camps, I am still traumatized by the emotional guilt tripping and psychological abuse meeted out 24/7, it was on bill boards, tv, radio, newspaper, social media, our freedoms taken, our movement our jobs threatened. Mandates, it's been relentless and I fear this calm period is just cover for writing into laws things they say we support but don't.

Excellent speech. The State in 1900 constituted 5% of GDP in the U.K. After Covid-19 it constitutes 50%. This is not just Hobbesian but Communist. And this happened under a Conservative government that has shown itself capable of criminalising normal human behaviour including meeting relatives, going for a walk, or attending church. The best thing that could happen in the Anglosphere is for all government agencies except the nuclear energy inspectorate to be closed down en masse and civil servants and politicians all sent home. No new laws shall be written or new crimes invented for ten years. All Covid law and related public health laws should be abolished. At the same time all taxes including sales taxes should be cut to zero. A flat tax on income from stocks, shares, land, rents, and salaries on individuals which exceeds in total £50,000 should replace the current tax and spend system. All UK Crown assets which amount to many trillions of pounds should be sold to reduce government debt and to repurchase energy and water supplies for the nation. Public spending should be reduced to 20% of GDP. Rapidly! And all attempts by government to police movement, speech, and thought - other then for speeding - should be ended. All CCTV cameras should be turned off. 5G should be dismantled. The pound should be returned to the gold standard. ALL government contracts with and subsidies to private companies should be ended forthwith. This is a reasonable and rational political programme. But no party in the UK offers anything like these measures as there is in effect no opposition to the increasingly technocratic and totalitarian character of government in the UK. There IS an alternative. But propaganda, mind control, CCTV cameras, draconian regulations, criminalisation of resistance and the mass immiseration of the population are being used to crush democratic opposition to the totalitarian form the UK government in London and in the regions has taken.
